Regulating algorithmic tools in reproductive health: ethical and legal challenges.

Artificial intelligence and algorithmic tools are increasingly integrated into reproductive healthcare, including fertility tracking applications, diagnostic systems, and clinical decision support tools. While these technologies may support improved access, personalisation, and decision making, their expansion is also associated with significant ethical and governance challenges in a domain shaped by legal risk, social norms, and deeply personal health decisions. These challenges include limited transparency, which may constrain informed consent and autonomy; risks of bias arising from unrepre

Lithuania's National Digital Health System Architecture, Evolution, and Lessons From a Centralized Approach Using Longitudinal Document Analysis: Descriptive National Case Study.

BACKGROUND: National digital health systems are increasingly recognized as a key tool for strengthening health care systems and improving patient outcomes. Global guidance from the World Health Organization and European Union initiatives emphasizes interoperability, robust data governance, and secure exchange of health information as prerequisites for system-wide benefits. However, translating these principles into operational national digital health infrastructures remains challenging, and empirical evidence on long-term, centralized implementation models is limited. Lithuania is among a smal

Telemedicine: contributions, difficulties and key factors for implementation in the prison setting.

Information and communication technologies are transforming the way we understand health, via a hyper-connected world in which patients, professionals and society take on new challenges and roles. This change is creating an ecosystem called connected health, in which telemedicine acquires special importance when distance (not only geographical), is a critical factor. It can respond to financial, social or safety needs or questions of dignity, as is the case with prisoners when they are transferred handcuffed and under custody to hospitals. Bringing health services closer to patients who cannot

Towards Malaria Elimination: A Nationwide Case-Control Study to Assess Risk Factors for Severe Malaria-Related Deaths in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe malaria-related deaths and assess their risk factors. METHODS: This is a case-control study using data from Brazil's Ministry of Health (2011-2020) on malaria-related deaths (ICD-10: B50-B54). A probabilistic record linkage was performed to match epidemiological data (Sivep-Malaria and Sinan) with death records from the Mortality Information System (SIM). Cases were defined as individuals who died of malaria, and controls were malaria cases that did not result in death. Logistic regression models were used to identify the factors associate

Complementing conventional infectious disease surveillance with national health insurance claims data in the Republic of Korea.

Surveillance remains an important tool for timely outbreak detection and response. Many countries, including Korea, have established national infectious disease surveillance systems with clinical notification. We aimed to evaluate the National Health Insurance Claims-based Surveillance (NHICS) compared to conventional passive report-based National Infectious Diseases Surveillance (NIDS). Reported to claimed cases ratios (R/C ratio) were evaluated from monthly notifiable disease cases captured by NIDS and NHICS. The relationships between 26 infectious diseases and each surveillance system were

Prevalence of work related musculoskeletal disorders in Italian workers: is there an underestimation of the related occupational risk factors?

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) represent an important socio-economic burden. The current risk assessment and management involved in the ethiopathogenesis of WMSDs is based on observational tools and checklists, which have some limitations in terms of accuracy and reliability. The aim of this study was to assess WMSD prevalence and identify possible correlations with several socio-demographic and work-related variables in a large cohort representative of Italian workers in order to improve our understanding of the WMSD phenomenon. METHODS: This study includes data f

Global Recognition of Traumatic Brain Injury as a Chronic and Notifiable Condition: A Post-WHA78 Advocacy Commentary.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability but one of the least recognized health problems in the world, affecting up to 69 million people annually. The associated lifelong disability in survivors, the loss of economic productivity, and being a risk factor for dementia consume 0.5% of global economic activity. Yet TBI is still largely invisible in national surveillance systems and not well represented in chronic disease frameworks. Consequently, governments are not equipped to provide proportional financing of acute care and long-term care of survivors, nor to bu

Assessing Health Data Security Risks in Global Health Partnerships: Development of a Conceptual Framework.

BACKGROUND: Health care databases contain a wealth of information that can be used to develop programs and mature health care systems. There is concern that the sensitive nature of health data (eg, ethnicity, reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, and lifestyle information) can have significant impact on individuals if misused, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized populations. As academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and international agencies begin to collaborate with low- and middle-income countries to develop and deploy health information technology

Functional classification of peripheral T-cell lymphomas as an approach to improve outcome prediction and therapy selection.

Many types of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) are currently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on their predominant site of organ involvement (eg, intestinal or cutaneous types). However, this approach and traditional staging scores such as the IPI can provide limited prognostic information, especially in those PTCL types where morbidity and mortality are primarily related to immune dysregulation and cytokine syndromes driven by the lymphoma cells. These "immune participatory" PTCLs (including, commonly, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and many extranodal types) can t
