A Scoping Review of Health Literacy Measurement in U.S. Interventions: Trends, Tools, and Gaps.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a critical determinant of health outcomes, yet considerable variability exists in how it is measured across intervention studies. This scoping review article systematically mapped health literacy measurement tools and implementation reporting practices in United States-based interventions published between 2014 and 2024, with particular attention to validated and nonvalidated instruments and their application across diverse populations and settings. METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-

Access and coverage of malaria services in Haiti in the context of elimination: a scoping review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Haiti is on the verge of possibly eliminating malaria, an endemic parasitic infection primarily caused by Plasmodium falciparum on the island of Hispaniola. Owing to its associated morbidity and mortality, malaria is a leading public health priority in Haiti. This scoping review aims to identify the scope of research on access and coverage of malaria surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment in Haiti in the elimination setting. METHODS: We compiled, analyzed, and synthesized the literature on access and coverage of antimalarial services in Haiti in the elimination setting based on

Gaps in Dyslipidemia Care Among Working-Aged Individuals With Employer-Sponsored Health Care.

Background The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology guidelines defined patient-management groups that would benefit from lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). We assessed gaps in dyslipidemia care among employees and spouses with health benefits. Methods and Results We studied 17 889 employees and spouses who were covered by an employer-sponsored health plan and participated in an annual health assessment. Using medical claims, laboratory tests, and risk assessment questionnaires, we found that 43% of participants were in one of 4 patient-management

Study protocol for a cluster-randomized trial to compare human papillomavirus based cervical cancer screening in community-health campaigns versus health facilities in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Despite guidelines for cervical cancer prevention in low-resource countries, a very small proportion of women in these settings undergo screening, and even fewer women are successfully treated. Using pilot data from western Kenya and World Health Organization recommendations, we developed a protocol to implement evidence-based cervical cancer screening and linkage to treatment strategies to the rural communities. We describe the protocol for a cluster-randomized trial to compare two implementation strategies for human-papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical cancer screening program usi

Effectiveness of concussion treatments in older adults: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Concussions can have significant implications on the health and quality of life of older adults. As most concussion research previously focused on children, athletes and military populations, there is a need to better understand the concussion-specific treatments for adults aged 65 and older. The aim of our systematic review is to review the existing literature on the effectiveness of concussion treatments on outcomes in adults aged 65 and older. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This systematic review will be conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and M

Targeted deep amplicon sequencing of kelch 13 and cytochrome b in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from an endemic African country using the Malaria Resistance Surveillance (MaRS) protocol.

BACKGROUND: Routine molecular surveillance for imported drug-resistant malaria parasites to the USA and European Union is an important public health activity. The obtained molecular data are used to help keep chemoprophylaxis and treatment guidelines up to date for persons traveling to malaria endemic countries. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies provide a new and effective way of tracking malaria drug-resistant parasites. METHODS: As part of a technology transfer arrangement between the CDC Malaria Branch and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Rome, Italy,

Neurofibromatosis 1 French national guidelines based on an extensive literature review since 1966.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a relatively common genetic disease, with a prevalence ranging between 1/3000 and 1/6000 people worldwide. The disease affects multiple systems with cutaneous, neurologic, and orthopedic as major manifestations which lead to significant morbidity or mortality. Indeed, NF1 patients are at an increased risk of malignancy and have a life expectancy about 10-15 years shorter than the general population. The mainstay of management of NF1 is a patient-centered longitudinal care with age-specific monitoring of clinical manifestations, aiming at the early recognition and sy

Transitional care for patients with surgical pediatric hepatobiliary disease: Choledochal cysts and biliary atresia.

Choledochal cysts (CDCs) and biliary atresia (BA) are rare pediatric hepatobiliary anomalies that require surgical intervention due to increased risk of malignancy and liver failure, respectively. The underlying disease and operative procedures place patients at risk for long-term complications, which may continue to affect them into adulthood. Lack of a transitional care model in the health-care system potentiates the challenges they will face following aging out of their pediatric providers' care. We sought to elucidate the long-term complications and challenges patients with CDCs and BA fac

Early diagnosis of coeliac disease in the Preventive Youth Health Care Centres in the Netherlands: study protocol of a case finding study (GLUTENSCREEN).

INTRODUCTION: Coeliac disease (CD) occurs in 1% of the population, develops early in life and is severely underdiagnosed. Undiagnosed and untreated disease is associated with short-term and long-term complications. The current healthcare approach is unable to solve the underdiagnosis of CD and timely diagnosis and treatment is only achieved by active case finding. Aim: to perform a case finding project to detect CD children who visit the Youth Health Care Centres (YHCCs) in a well-described region in the Netherlands to evaluate whether it is feasible, cost-effective and well accepted by the po

Improved results in paediatric diabetes care using a quality registry in an improvement collaborative: a case study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Several studies show that good metabolic control is important for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. In Sweden, there are large differences in mean haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in different hospitals and difficulties implementing national guidelines in everyday practice. This study shows how the participation in an improvement collaborative could facilitate improvements in the quality of care by paediatric diabetes teams. The Swedish paediatric diabetes quality registry, SWEDIABKIDS was used as a tool and resource for feedback and outcome measures. METHODS: Twelve teams at

Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis: Immune-Pathogen Imbalance in a Treatment-Resistant Benign Inflammatory Disease.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a benign non-specific inflammatory disease that occurs in women during non-lactation. Main symptoms in the early stages of disease include red breast lumps, swelling, heat and pain, whereas in the later stages, breast abscesses, sinus tracts, and even ulcers may develop. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of IGM remains unclear, and there are no standardized guidelines for IGM treatment, which leads to treatment resistance and frequent recurrence, causing serious distress to women's physical and mental health. Based on the existing literature evidenc

Developing a decision support tool to prevent community-acquired pressure injuries in spinal cord injury in ambulatory care: A nurse-led protocol for mix methods research.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of formal guidelines and decision support tools to prevent community-acquired pressure injuries (CAPrIs) in Veterans with spinal cord injury (SCI). PURPOSE: In this article we present our research protocol that describes our plans to create and test a decision support tool to prevent CAPrIs in SCI. METHODS: In Aim 1, we identified mental-models of CAPrI prevention from the perspectives of Veterans (using photovoice, guided tours), and Veterans Health Administration SCI providers (using interviews), and triangulation to compare the two mental-models. This led to a

Contraception for women with medical disorders.

Many women in the reproductive years have chronic medical conditions that are affected by pregnancy or in which the fetus is placed at increased risk. In most of these women, ongoing medical management of their conditions is greatly improved, even compared with a decade or two ago. However, their condition may still be seriously exacerbated by the physiological changes of pregnancy, and close monitoring of a carefully planned pregnancy is optimal. This requires effective and safe contraceptive use until pregnancy is desired and the medical condition is stabilised. Many contraceptives will also

Stakeholder views on the installation and use of mile long tracks in community parks aimed at increasing physical activity in low-income minority areas: A qualitative evaluation in Birmingham UK.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) is essential for preventing and managing chronic diseases and improving mental health. Despite national guidelines recommending regular PA, significant disparities exist across demographic groups and regions in the UK, with Birmingham and the West Midlands reporting some of the lowest activity levels. We aimed to explore the development, implementation, and perceived value of Every Step Matters (ESM) tracks-mile-long walking routes installed in eight Birmingham parks situated in neighbourhoods with high deprivation and ethnic diversity. Timely access to computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in acute critical conditions: clinical and health system outcomes. A scoping review.

Acute critical conditions such as stroke, severe trauma and sepsis represent major causes of mortality, disability and financial pressure on health systems. In these time-dependent scenarios, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are fundamental for diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making; however, delays in access to imaging may represent structural bottlenecks associated with clinical and health-system outcomes. To map and synthesise the available evidence on the relationship between timely access to CT and MRI and clinical and health system outcomes in acute criti
