On the use of simple analytic mathematical models of communicable diseases.

Complex simulation models of diseases are becoming widely used by researchers and planners. This paper shows how simple analytic models can explain some otherwise inexplicable aspects of the behaviour of both these complex models and of the diseases in the real world. A system for grouping communicable diseases on the basis of the mathematical representation of the disease aetiology is developed.

Epizootic and zoonotic helminths of the bobcat (Lynx rufus) in Illinois and a comparison of its helminth component communities across the American Midwest.

A total of 6257 helminths of 19 taxa were recovered from the digestive tract and lungs of 67 bobcats in Illinois. Infections caused by Alaria mustelae, Diphyllobothrium latum, and Macracanthorhynchus ingens are reported for the first time in bobcats. From all the taxa recovered, only three species occurred in high prevalence and caused intense infections: Taenia rileyi, Alaria marcianae, and Toxocara cati, with prevalence and mean intensity of 70% and 6; 42% and 193, and 25% and 14 individuals, respectively. Prevalence lower than 15% of 14 helminth species suggests bobcats are not continuously

Comparison of moxidectin oral gel and ivermectin oral paste against a spectrum of internal parasites of ponies with special attention to encysted cyathostome larvae.

Two dosages of moxidectin oral gel were evaluated and compared to a therapeutic dose of ivermectin oral paste in the control of a spectrum of gastrointestinal parasites of ponies naturally infected in southern Louisiana or Mississippi. Thirty-two mixed-breed ponies ranging in age from one to 21 years were used in this controlled test. Eight weeks prior to the experiment, ponies grazing on contaminated pasture were moved to a paddock and fed a pelleted ration, thus reducing or eliminating the potential for additional infection and ensuring the existence of a population of encysted larvae. Ponie

The metazoan parasite community of migrating greater yellowlegs, Tringa melanoleuca, from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas and New Mexico.

Forty-eight migrant greater yellowlegs, Tringa melanoleuca, collected from southwestern Texas and southeastern New Mexico were examined for metazoan parasites. Nine helminth and 7 ectoparasite species were collected. Five new host records were recorded. The helminth fauna showed little diversity, little concentration for dominance, and no significant positive or negative associations between species were found. All species of helminths showed a contagious distribution. The component helminth community consisted of 2 core, 3 secondary, and 4 satellite species, and there was no host specialist.

Palaeogenomic analysis reveals helminth infections in pre-Columbian individuals consistent with fisher-gatherer subsistence at the Jabuticabeira II sambaqui, Southern Brazil.

The sambaqui (shellmounds) people are recognized as fisher-gatherers who inhabited the coastal regions of Brazil, with a subsistence on a di … different JABII individuals from the previous study, confirming the spread of this soil-transmitted helminthiasis. The novel data herein agree with the subsistence of the JABII fisher-gatherers, the sedentary lifestyle and the faunal surroundings in the Southern coastal region of Brazil.

Draft genome assemblies and SSR-Seq dataset for Simarouba amara and S. versicolor, native species to Latin America.

Simarouba amara (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "marupá") and S. versicolor (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "pé-de-perdiz") are Neotropical species belonging to the family Simaroubaceae. These species have historically been used in folk medicine to treat conditions such as malaria, cancer, helminthiasis, viral infections, gastritis, ulcers, diarrhea, and diabetes. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies have improved the acquisition of genomic datasets for economically wild species. This genomics data enables the development of microsatellite markers (SSR), which a…

Formalin-fixed stool improves the performance of the Kato-Katz method.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Parasitic infections are a public health problem worldwide, including in Thailand. An epidemiological survey for helminthiasis based on stool examination uses the Kato-Katz method as recommended by the World Health Organization. Limitations of this method include the need for fresh stool, time requirement, and lack of quality control. The aim of this study was to enhance the efficiency of the Kato-Katz technique using formalin and glycerol solutions and to implement specimen preparation in fieldwork. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the Kato-Katz method, stool samples were divid…

Review of the WHO guideline on preventive chemotherapy for public health control of strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is a soil-transmitted helminthiasis that is estimated to affect 300-600 million people across Asia, Africa, South and central America, and the Pacific. This neglected parasitic disease is most known for its ability to persist as a lifelong infection due to autoinfection and its risk of hyperinfection and disseminated disease during immunosuppression, which has a more than 60% case fatality. Despite the large global burden of strongyloidiasis, there have been no large-scale public health programmes or WHO guidelines directed towards its control and elimination. However, over th…

Infections and immunity: associations with obesity and related metabolic disorders.

About one-fourth of the global population is either overweight or obese, both of which increase the risk of insulin resistance, cardiovascul … ion-like diseases. There is also an interesting relationship between helminths and type 2 diabetes; helminthiasis may reduce the pro-inflammatory state, but is also associated with type 2 diabetes or even neoplastic processes. Several studies have also documented altered circulating levels of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes in obesity, which likely modi …
