Thursday's child: the role of adverse childhood experiences in explaining mental health disparities among lesbian, gay, and bisexual U.S. adults.

This study examined how adverse childhood experiences (ACE) may explain disparities in poor mental health between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB), and heterosexual adults. Data are from three US states' 2010 behavioral risk factor surveillance system surveys (n = 20,060) that included sexual orientation, ACE inventory, and mental distress. LGB status was significantly associated with mental distress (OR = 1.85 [1.14-3.02]). Once incorporating ACE scores into the multiple regression analysis, LGB status was no longer associated with mental distress (OR = 1.28 [0.76-2.16]). The results corrobor

Sexual orientation and smoking: results from a multisite women's health study.

Although lesbians are believed to be at disproportionately high risk for smoking, few published studies have focused on smoking rates in this population. We examined and compared rates and demographic correlates of smoking among 550 lesbians and 279 heterosexual women in Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and in New York City in 1994-1996 using a self-administered survey questionnaire. African-American lesbians were more likely than African-American heterosexual women or White lesbians to be current smokers. For the sample as a whole, education was the most robust predictor of both current and lif

Differences in Substance Use Disorder Severity Among Sexual Minority Adolescents and Emerging Adults: Results from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe disparities in the severity of substance use disorders (SUDs) between sexual minority (SM) and heterosexual youth. METHODS: The current study analyzed data from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine differences in SUDs between SM and heterosexual youth. Analyses were limited to participants aged 12-25 years (n = 23,333). Participants reported on their sexual identity and completed items on past-year substance use. SUDs were classified using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) c

Lessons Learned: A Straight Therapist's Perspective on Treating a Gay Woman's Romantic Breakup.

This article presents the retrospective insights of a straight female psychologist working with a gay female patient through the emotional aftermath of a romantic breakup. Central to this case study is the therapist's journey toward understanding the culturally specific dynamics that shape the breakup experiences of non-heterosexual individuals differently from those of heterosexual individuals. In addition to deepening her understanding of important therapeutic considerations unique to a non-heterosexual breakup, the author explores how certain cultural norms within the queer community, inclu

Risk Factors Associated with HIV Acquisition in Males Participating in HIV Vaccine Efficacy Trials in South Africa.

In South Africa, HIV acquisition risk has been studied less in people assigned male at birth. We studied the associations between risk behaviors, clinical features and HIV incidence amongst males in two South African HIV preventive vaccine efficacy trials. We used Cox proportional hazards models to test for associations between demographics, sexual behaviors, clinical variables and HIV acquisition among males followed in the HVTN 503 (n = 219) and HVTN 702 (n = 1611) trials. Most males reported no male sexual partners (99.09% in HVTN 503) or identified as heterosexual (88.08% in HVTN 702). Ann

Examining sexual identity stability and change over time and associations with tobacco use in a nationally representative US sample.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research has found sexual minority identifying individuals are disproportionately burdened by tobacco use and tobacco use disorder (TUD). However, these studies often conceptualize sexual identity as time-invariant. This study examined sexual identity over time and whether a transition to a sexual minority identity was associated with tobacco outcomes. METHODS: This study used data from Waves 1-4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (2013/14-2016/18) study (adolescents and adults aged ≥ 14 years; n = 26,553). We examined associations of sexual identity

Substance use disparities by age, race, sex, and sexual orientation among persons living with HIV in the Southern U.S.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and drug use is overrepresented among individuals living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and is associated with poor health outcomes. Determining the extent to which substance use differs between demographic profiles of people living with HIV (PLWH) would determine at-risk groups that would benefit from intervention. METHODS: Cross-sectional screening data (N = 1307, Mage = 42.7 years, 66% male, 86% African American, 39% sexual minority) was examined from an HIV clinic in the southern U.S. largely treating underserved and low-income patients. Sexual Language Use in U.S. College Students Across Twenty Years.

Study 1: Students (N = 256 women, 129 men, and 13 nonbinary individuals, 61.8% heterosexual) from the same college campus studied 20 years ago (Murnen, 2000) reported on terms they used to refer to male genitals, female genitals, and "having sex" either within the context of an intimate partnership, talking with friends of their gender, or talking with friends in a mixed-gender group. Terms for genitals were coded as degrading or not, and terms for sex as aggressive or not, based on the previous study. Whereas in the past almost three-quarters of men used a degrading term for female genitals,

Investigating differential protective effects of marriage on substance use by sexual identity status.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that marriage is protective against substance use. However, few studies have examined whether this protective effect differs for sexual minorities, a population at increased risk for substance use. Using data from four waves of the cross-sectional U.S. National Alcohol Survey (NAS; 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015), we investigated whether the protective effects of marriage varied by sexual identity. METHODS: Sex-stratified logistic regression models were used to examine independent and interactive effects of current marital status (being married vs. not) and sexual mi

Skin cancer and skin cancer risk behaviors among sexual and gender minority populations: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals of sexual and gender minorities may have different lifetime risk of skin cancer and ultraviolet radiation exposure than heterosexual persons. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the prevalence of skin cancer and behaviors that increase risk of skin cancer among sexual and gender minority populations. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science, searching for articles through October 18, 2019, that investigated risk of skin cancer and behaviors among sexual and gender minority populations. Use of "Poppers" among Adults in the United States, 2015-2017.

We sought to estimate the prevalence as well as demographic and drug use-related correlates of poppers use among adults in the United States. Data were analyzed from adult participants (ages 18-64) in the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 115,744), a nationally representative survey of non-institutionalized adults in the US. An estimated 3.3% of adults have ever used poppers. Over a third (35.1%) of gay men are estimated as having ever used poppers. Estimates were lower for heterosexual (3.7%) and bisexual males (11.3%), and for heterosexual (1.8%), bisexual (4.8%), and les

The relationship between help-seeking attitudes and masculine norms among monozygotic male twins discordant for sexual orientation.

OBJECTIVE: In general, heterosexual men are less favorable to asking for help compared to women and gay men. This can be problematic if a man avoids professional help when he is experiencing significant psychological distress. Yet, it is unclear to what degree such attitudes among men are due to innate differences or social environments. Studying twins provides one avenue for teasing apart these relationships. METHOD: We recruited 38 pairs of monozygotic male twins (Mage = 35.87 years, SD = 9.52) raised together and who were discordant for sexual orientation. They completed measures of psycho

Effect of variable transmission rate on the dynamics of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: The cause of the high HIV prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa is incompletely understood, with heterosexual penile-vaginal transmission proposed as the main mechanism. Heterosexual HIV transmission has been estimated to have a very low probability; but effects of cofactors that vary in space and time may substantially alter this pattern. METHODS: To test the effect of individual variation in the HIV infectiousness generated by co-infection, we developed and analyzed a mathematical sexual network model that simulates the behavioral components of a population from Malawi, as well as th

[The quality of life of male homosexual patients with condyloma].

INTRODUCTION: A recent qualitative study shows that genital warts can reduce the quality of life of heterosexual patients considerably. This follow-up study seeks to elucidate the illness perception among men who have sex with men (MSM). The aim is to examine the extent to which minority cultural conditions and factors affect the experiences of these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was based on qualitative interviews with six Danish MSM. Along with the study among heterosexual patients, a literature review identified the important questions to be presented to the participants. RES

Neurodevelopmental correlates of paraphilic sexual interests in men.

The etiology of anomalous, or paraphilic, sexual preferences in men is unclear although a growing literature points to their prenatal neurodevelopmental ontogenesis. The present study explored whether this was also apparent in a community sample of 200 heterosexual men by examining their sexual fantasies using the Wilson Sex Fantasy Questionnaire (WSFQ) and several demographic and somatic neurodevelopmental markers, including sibling sex composition, handedness, maternal and paternal age at birth, second to fourth finger length ratios, and fluctuating asymmetry of finger lengths and wrist widt

Factors associated with 'feeling suicidal': the role of sexual identity.

This paper examines factors associated with feeling suicidal in a large sample of urban men in Sydney and Melbourne, aged 18-50, including heterosexual, gay and bisexual men, HIV antibody positive and HIV antibody negative. As in previous research, sexuality (being homosexual or bisexual) was found to be a major predictor of suicidality. The research went some way towards explaining the close relationship between feeling suicidal and sexual orientation. Sexuality interacts with feeling bad in that, once men feel moderately bad/depressed, they are more likely to feel suicidal if they are homose

Seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and sexual behaviors in bisexual African-American and Hispanic men visiting a sexually transmitted disease clinic in New York City.

A cross-sectional human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) serosurvey was conducted between January 1988 and January 1993 at a New York City sexually transmitted disease clinic serving predominantly African-American and Hispanic patients. Overall, 14% (415/3,069) of participating men reported having sex with men; among these, only 52 (13%) were classified as "homosexual" (having had sex with men exclusively since 1978). Most men (87%) who reported having sex with other men also reported having sex with women. These included 147 (35%) "bisexuals" (sex with more than one man and at least one

Association of methamphetamine use during sex with risky sexual behaviors and HIV infection among non-injection drug users.

Morbidity, mortality, and drug treatment data suggest that methamphetamine use is on the rise. Based on research findings of the sexual behaviors of methamphetamine-using injection drug users, we chose to examine the relationship between methamphetamine use during sex and risky sexual behaviors and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositivity among clients of publicly funded HIV testing sites in California who reported never injecting drugs. We found that among gay, bisexual, and heterosexual men and heterosexual women, users of methamphetamines reported more sexual partners than non-meth

Sexual behaviour, drug use and hepatitis B infection in Chandigarh students.

BACKGROUND: The relationship of hepatitis B virus infection with drug use and sexual activity in Indian college students has not been studied earlier. METHODS: We studied this relationship in Chandigarh, using a prospective, cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey and blood tests for hepatitis B markers. The responders were assured of the confidentiality of their responses and blood test results. RESULTS: Of the 1311 students who participated, 192 (15%) were sexually active. Eight-four per cent of them were heterosexual, 7.3% homosexual and 8.7% bisexual. Thirty-seven per cent of heterose
