Abnormalities in and around the hip: MR imaging versus sonography.

Sonography and MR imaging should be considered complementary rather than competing modalities. They demonstrate similar abnormalities of the soft tissues, but MR imaging is able to demonstrate intraosseous and articular abnormalities and offers a better anatomic overview because of its larger field of view, whereas sonography offers dynamic evaluation and can provide real-time guidance for percutaneous procedures. Both of these modalities have roles in the imaging evaluation of injuries in and around the hip.

Heterotopic Ossification of the Adductor Muscles in Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

Diseases of the musculature can be caused, for example, by alimentary or traumatic issues. In three bald eagles with painful lameness and/or a reduced range of the hip joint, a muscular disease was diagnosed via radiographic examination. The eagles were kept in a falconry and trained as demonstration birds, which were displayed on a gloved hand and flown in falconry education programs. The imaging revealed varying degrees of calcification of the adductors along the course of the puboischiofemoral muscle of the left hind limb in all cases. A histological examination of the affected musculature

A case of late iliac arterial thrombosis due to component migration after revision total hip arthroplasty.

Although vascular injuries associated with primary and revision total hip arthroplasty are infrequent, these complications can have devastating effects that can lead to morbidity and even mortality. A few previous reports have described embolic distal limb ischemia secondary to a failed and migrated acetabular implant in discontinuity with the pelvis. We present a rare case in which a support ring from a failed and migrated acetabular cage construct led to injury of the common femoral artery. The patient developed acute thrombotic occlusion leading to distal extremity ischemia even after oral

One-dimension statistical parametric mapping in lower limb biomechanical analysis: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanics significantly impacts sports performance and injury prevention. Traditional methods like discrete point analysis simplify continuous kinetic and kinematic data, while one-dimensional Statistical Parametric Mapping (spm1d) evaluates entire movement curves. Nevertheless, spm1d's application in sports and injury research is limited. As no systematic review exists, we conducted a scoping systematic review, synthesizing the current applications of spm1d across various populations, activities, and injuries. This review concludes by identifying gaps in the literature and sugg

Tips of the trade #35. Intramedullary nailing of the femoral shaft with supination.

Use of the supine position in femoral shaft nailing is useful in cases of ipsilateral hip fracture and when multiple injuries are present. The nail enters at the greater trochanter and then maintains an upright position parallel to the canal of the femur. This technique facilitates control of respiratory function and limits nerve compression complications.

Why are older Australian football players at greater risk of hamstring injury?

INTRODUCTION: Increasing age is a commonly identified predictor of hamstring injury but is not modifiable to reduce injury risk. Why increasing age is a risk factor for hamstring injuries in athletes has not been studied to date. This study aimed to identify potentially modifiable age-related changes that predict hamstring injury in a population of Australian football players. METHODS: One hundred and one young (< or =20 years), and 73 older (> or =25 years), Australian football players, without a history of hamstring injury in the past 12 months were studied prospectively. Players underwent

[Traumatology and sports injuries in equestrian acrobatics in the adolescent].

The objective of this study was to compile knowledge of athletic injuries and complaint patterns related specifically to equestrian acrobatics (e.a.). A 20-page standardized questionnaire was sent to 114 e.a. participants. The mean age of the participants in e.a. groups was 15 +/- 3 years, that of independent participants 21 +/- 3 years. A total of 489 injuries was reported, mainly to muscles and tendons (35%), skin (33%) and joints and ligaments (25%). Bone injuries (6%) and head injuries (2%) were infrequent. Analysis of the localization showed that the head-face-neck region was involved in

An Unlikely Cause of Groin Pain: Obturator Externus Tear in a Professional Soccer Player.

Groin pain is a common and complex problem in athletes, especially soccer players, associated with a wide variety of possible injuries in numerous anatomical structures. One of the causes of groin pain is damage to the deep muscles of the hip region, with isolated traumatic injury of the obturator externus muscle rarely described and probably underdiagnosed. This report describes a clinical case of a soccer player who presented with acute hip pain and buttock pain resulting from a rapid change of position in load, associated with pain with active hip external rotation and passive internal rota

What is the Functional Role of Obturator Externus Muscle? The Case of a Moderate Tear in a Professional Soccer Player: A Case Report.

The obturator externus muscle is a pelvic and hip muscle with a complex anatomical arrangement, which is involved in hip stability. This paper presents a new case of an obturator externus muscle tear in a professional soccer player, offering valuable insights into the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and successful conservative management. Additionally, a comprehensive review of the literature on this topic is presented. A 21-year-old player reported anterior hip and adductor discomfort after a game, with no recollection of a specific traumatic event. Clinical examination revealed

The lived experience of military beneficiaries with amputations at the hip and pelvic level.

BACKGROUND: Hip- and pelvic-level amputations are devastating injuries that drastically alter patient function and quality of life. This study examined the experience of military beneficiaries with a hip- or pelvic-level amputation to better characterize their challenges and specific needs and to optimize treatment in the future. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the Military Health System and identified 118 patients with a history of one or more amputation(s) at the hip or pelvic level between October 2001 and September 2017. Surviving participants (n = 97) were mailed a letter

A simultaneous bilateral asymmetric hip fracture in an elderly patient: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous bilateral hip fractures are usually associated with high energy trauma, seizures, metabolic diseases and bisphosphonates use. They are observed rarely in the elderly population after simple trauma and usually have the same fracture pattern (symmetric). We report a rare case of asymmetric fracture and discuss mechanism of injury and treatment, analyzing the literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of an 86-year old woman with a simultaneous bilateral asymmetric hip fracture (trochanteric on the right side and subcapital on the left), occurred after a fall a

How Does Chondrolabral Damage and Labral Repair Influence the Mechanics of the Hip in the Setting of Cam Morphology? A Finite-Element Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cam morphology are prone to chondrolabral injuries that may progress to osteoarthritis. The mechanical factors responsible for the initiation and progression of chondrolabral injuries in these individuals are not well understood. Additionally, although labral repair is commonly performed during surgical correction of cam morphology, the isolated mechanical effect of labral repair on the labrum and surrounding cartilage is unknown. QUESTION/PURPOSES: Using a volunteer-specific finite-element analysis, we asked: (1) How does cam morphology create a deleterious mecha

Minimalist Footwear and Softer Running Technique Alter Injury Location but Not Incidence in Recreational Endurance Runners.

BACKGROUND: Minimalist footwear and running retraining are often recommended by running coaches to reduce the risk of running-related injuri … that injury distribution varied among groups in the as-treated and per-protocol analyses, with more hip injuries in the control group (P = .015 and P = .01, respectively) and more foot injuries in the running retraining group (P = .018 and P = .04). CONCLUSION: Contrary to popular belief, neither minimalist footwear nor a softer running technique reduced the …
