Endoparasites of the Imperial Cormorant (Leucocarbo atriceps) in the Falkland Islands: investigation of secondary hosts and detection methods.

Seabirds are important apex predators and valuable sentinels of marine ecosystem health. Because they integrate signals from multiple trophic levels, their diet provides important insights into marine food-web dynamics, gastrointestinal parasite fauna, and the impacts of human activities. Changes in diet composition can affect seabird reproductive success, health status and parasite load. Many protozoan and helminth parasites depend on predator-prey interactions to complete their life cycles, making dietary analysis a useful tool for understanding parasite transmission and ecology. Here, 82 pe

Phylogenetic regionalization of ectoparasites and their hosts using 2 approaches: a case study with fleas and their rodent hosts from Mongolia.

We applied 2 methods of phylogenetic regionalization (evoregions and phyloregions) for the distributions of fleas and their rodent hosts across Mongolia. We investigated the congruence between these 2 regionalization schemes and their alignment with physiographic and ecological subdivisions of Mongolia. We identified evoregions and phyloregions for both fleas and hosts. Ancestral regional distributions were reconstructed, and a phylogenetic correspondence analysis identified key contributing lineages. Using the V-measure, we tested for the congruence between (a) evoregions or phyloregions iden

Effect of Cestodes Parasitizing the Small Intestine on Host Protease Activities in Herring Gull Chicks.

Total protease activity and activities of protease subclasses in the small intestine were assayed in herring gull (Larus argentatus (Pontoppidan, 1763)) chicks infested by the cestodes Tetrabothrius erostris (Loennberg, 1889) (Cestoda: Tetrabothriidae), Microsomacanthus ductilus (Linton, 1927) (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae), Wardium cirrosa (Krabbe, 1869) (Cestoda: Aploparaksidae), Arctotaenia tetrabothrioides (Loennberg, 1890), and Alcataenia larina (Krabbe, 1869) (Cestoda: Dilepididae). Serine protease activity was found to decrease in small intestine sites with the highest cestode abundance (M.

With a little help from my friend: engaging CD44 facilitates Plasmodium falciparum invasion of erythrocytes.

Merozoite invasion in erythrocytes is a complex process. Kongsomboonvech et al. identify the host transmembrane protein CD44 as a critical coreceptor that, when crosslinked, significantly enhances the ability of Plasmodium falciparum to invade human erythrocytes. It provides a molecular link between early parasite attachment and the final, essential invasion steps.

Controlled mild water stress as a priming tool to inherent defense mechanisms of navel orange against citrus nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans.

Citrus nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans Cobb, 1913 is a major economically important plant-parasitic nematode responsible for citrus slow decline worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of controlled mild water stress on priming defences in navel orange (Citrus sinensis “Navel”) seedlings and to model nematode-host interactions under stress. Five greenhouse treatments were applied: negative control (C-, 100% field capacity), positive control (C+, 100%), pre-infection water stress (T1, 40%), post-infection water stress (T2, 40%), and continuous water stress (T3, 70%). Nematode r

The multifaceted role of cAMP signalling in Leishmania pathogenesis and host immune modulation.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is a pivotal second messenger involved in regulating numerous cellular processes, including apoptosis, kinase activation, immune responses, and cell cycle progression. In the context of Leishmania infection, emerging evidence highlights how different Leishmania species exploit host and parasite-derived cAMP signalling pathways to modulate host cell functions and promote their survival. This review consolidates current understanding of parasite-mediated modulation of host defence mechanisms through cAMP signalling, thereby emphasising its crucial role in es

Seasonal patterns of Hematodinium perezi differ between blue crab host and environmental DNA in a South Carolina estuary.

The parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium perezi is known to harm and kill marine crustaceans worldwide. It is unclear, however, how the phenology of host infections differs from that of in-water life stages of H. perezi, and how these cycles may vary regionally. Across the US East Coast, including in South Carolina (SC), H. perezi is a parasite of the economically important Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the seasonal presence of H. perezi in C. sapidus and benthic water of the Charleston Harbor estuary, SC, USA, using real-time PCR (

Deep phenotypic profiling uncovers cryptic effects of antifilarial drugs.

The anthelmintics ivermectin, albendazole, and diethylcarbamazine are the backbone of mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns targeting hum … macologically relevant effects. There is growing evidence that cryptic phenotypes involving altered host-parasite interactions, including changes in parasite secretions, may help reconcile these discrepancies. Focusing on the causative species of lymphatic filariasis, we used high content imaging and quantitative mass spectrometry to enable deeper phenotypic profiling of dr …

The parasitophorous vacuole membrane of Toxoplasma gondii: A custom structural framing with smart interior plumbing for resource allocation.

In essence, the parasitophorous vacuole (PV) of Toxoplasma is a "Do-It-Yourself" renovation project led by the parasite after invasion of a guest house (the host cell) to install itself surreptitiously in a private and custom-built room, reinforced by drywall (the PV membrane). The function of the PV membrane (PVM) is to keep away the host security guards (immune response, lysosomes) from the parasite while allowing necessary and controlled access to host resources. Inside the PV, Toxoplasma relies on a crew of creative interior designers (the GRA proteins or GRA) to remodel and transform the

Snail immunity to schistosomes: insights from omics studies.

Schistosomiasis is a serious public health concern, with transmission facilitated by a small number of freshwater snail intermediate host species. Infection outcomes vary greatly across the primary vector genera, Biomphalaria (for Schistosoma mansoni), Bulinus (for S. haematobium), and Oncomelania (for S. japonicum), even within species, ranging from full resistance to high compatibility. Omics methods have altered this field by correlating host genotype, baseline immunological status, and time-resolved responses to whether invading miracidia are eliminated or develop sporocysts. Evidence from

Bat phylogeny and geographic location, rather than bat individual characteristics, explains the pattern of trypanosome infection in Europe.

Understanding the drivers of parasite susceptibility provides valuable information, such as how parasites spread, what conditions favour their transmission, and what host characteristics make infections more likely. It can also reveal co-evolutionary dynamics and adaptation strategies between hosts and parasites. In this study, we investigated the infection patterns of several bat species across Europe by trypanosome parasites. We used phylogenetic generalised linear mixed models to investigate whether geographic location, individual characteristics (sex, body mass and body size) or species af

Biological and physiological changes of Biomphalaria glabrata infected by Heterorhabditis bacteriophora.

The present study investigated for the first time the influence of exposure time (24 or 48 h) of Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) to Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae), strain HP88, on some physiological and reproductive parameters of the host mollusk. Throughout the experiment, intense glycogenolysis was observed in both exposed groups, which was more accentuated in the digestive gland. This change was accompanied by a significant increase in the free glucose content in the exposed snails, indicating that H. bacteriophora infection induces the breakdown

The Senegalese and Brazilian strains of Schistosoma mansoni exhibit high compatibility with Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Biomphalaria glabrata.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni, is endemic in both Africa and South America. In Senegal and Brazil, S. mansoni is transmitted by Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Biomphalaria glabrata, respectively. With increasing human migration from Senegal to the Americas, there is a potential risk of transferring parasite strains across continents. Understanding the compatibility between Schistosoma species and strains, and snail hosts is therefore essential. This study investigated the compatibility of two S. mansoni strains from Senegal (SmSEN) and Brazil (SmBRA) with bo

Influence of biophysical and biochemical cues on Plasmodium sporozoite dynamics in skin tissue.

BACKGROUND: Malaria infection is initiated when Plasmodium sporozoites are injected by Anopheles mosquitoes into the human skin. These motile parasites must move through the dermal environment to reach blood vessels, and therefore, their ability to sense a broad range of environmental cues is critical for successful infection. The skin is a complex microenvironment with varying extracellular matrix (ECM) composition, stiffness, topography, temperature, and humidity. However, the mechanisms by which sporozoites adapt to and navigate through this landscape remain poorly understood. METHODS: Thi

Ticks' tricks: immunomodulatory effects of ixodid tick saliva at the cutaneous tick-host interface.

Due to changes in global climate, the geographic distribution of ticks and tick-borne infections is increasing and represents a growing global health concern for humans. Ticks of the genus Ixodidae are globally abundant and transmit a wide variety of pathogens that cause human infections, including tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis. The transmission of pathogens into human skin while blood feeding causes changes in the local immune cell network and has various effects on structural skin cells, including sensory neurons. Recent studies have focused on the effect of tick saliva on cel
