Fast and High-Resolution luminal water imaging for prostate cancer diagnosis.

PURPOSE: This study aims to address the limitation of long acquisition times in luminal water imaging (LWI), a promising noninvasive MRI technique for prostate cancer detection and grading, by implementing an accelerated multi-echo spin-echo method termed T2 mapping using echo merging plus k-t undersampling with reduced flip angles (TEMPURA). METHODS: TEMPURA enables faster acquisition through echo merging, k-t undersampling, and reduced refocusing flip angles. A prospective study was conducted on 24 patients (age 59-75 years) with biopsy-proven prostate cancer. Imaging was performed on a 3 T

Double-branched and area-constraint fully convolutional networks for automated serous retinal detachment segmentation in SD-OCT images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Quantitative assessment of subretinal fluid in spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images is crucial for the diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy. For the subretinal fluid segmentation, the traditional methods need to segment retinal layers and then segment subretinal fluid. The layer segmentation has a high influence on subretinal fluid segmentation, so we aim to develop a deep learning model to segment subretinal fluid automatically without layer segmentation. METHODS: In this paper, we propose a novel image-to-image double-branched and a

Individual Variations in Nucleus Accumbens Responses Associated with Major Depressive Disorder Symptoms.

Abnormal reward-related responses in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) have been reported for major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. However, variability exists in the reported results, which could be due to heterogeneity in neuropathology of depression. To parse the heterogeneity of MDD we investigated variation of NAcc responses to gain and loss anticipations using fMRI. We found NAcc responses to monetary gain and loss were significantly variable across subjects in both MDD and healthy control (HC) groups. The variations were seen as a hyperactive response subtype that showed elevated activat

Quantitative T(1rho) and adiabatic Carr-Purcell T2 magnetic resonance imaging of human occipital lobe at 4 T.

The feasibility of performing quantitative T(1rho) MRI in human brain at 4 T is shown. T(1rho) values obtained from five volunteers were compared with T2 and adiabatic Carr-Purcell (CP) T2 values. Measured relaxation time constants increased in order from T2, CP-T2, T(1rho) both in white and gray matter, demonstrating differential sensitivities of these methods to dipolar interactions and/or proton exchange and diffusion in local microscopic field gradients, which are so-called dynamic averaging (DA) processes. In occipital lobe, all relaxation time constants were found to be higher in white m

Real-time computer-assisted notch assessment in anterior cruciate ligament repair.

Graft impingement can cause graft failure or movement restrictions. Intraoperative computer-assisted referencing of the tibial and femoral geometry, including precise mapping of the intercondylar notch, allows placement of the tunnels by real-time calculation balancing the impingement risks vs isometry. Biological fixation with bone cylinders locks the graft flush with the joint line and requires more accurate tunnel placement to avoid graft impingement. In 45 patients who underwent such navigation controlled tunnel placement 41 had no need for notchplasty. In two cases, the notchplasty was pe

Combining decision support and image processing: a PROforma model.

This paper addresses two important problems in medical image interpretation:(1) integration of numeric and symbolic information, (2) access to external sources of medical knowledge. We have developed a prototype in which image processing algorithms are combined with symbolic representations for reasoning, decision making and task management in an integrated, platform-independent system for the differential diagnosis of abnormalities in mammograms. The prototype is based on PROforma, a generic technology for building decision support systems based on clinical guidelines. The PROforma language d

Accelerating FLAIR imaging via deep learning reconstruction: potential for evaluating white matter hyperintensities.

PURPOSE: To evaluate deep learning-reconstructed (DLR)-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images generated from undersampled data, compare them with fully sampled and rapidly acquired FLAIR images, and assess their potential for white matter hyperintensity evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 30 patients with white matter hyperintensities, obtaining fully sampled FLAIR images (standard FLAIR, std-FLAIR). We created accelerated FLAIR (acc-FLAIR) images using one-third of the fully sampled data and applied deep learning to generate DLR-FLAIR images. Three neuroradiologists as

Segmentation and texture analysis of structural biomarkers using neighborhood-clustering-based level set in MRI of the schizophrenic brain.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia (SZ) is a psychiatric disorder that especially affects individuals during their adolescence. There is a need to study the subanatomical regions of SZ brain on magnetic resonance images (MRI) based on morphometry. In this work, an attempt was made to analyze alterations in structure and texture patterns in images of the SZ brain using the level-set method and Laws texture features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T1-weighted MRI of the brain from Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) database were considered for analysis. Segmentation was carried out using the level-

[Modern MRI of the small bowell].

CLINICAL METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES: The radiological diagnostics of diseases of the small intestine have undergone a great change in the last two decades. Through rapid progress with new treatments and an increasing therapeutic focus on transmural healing, a complete evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract is now crucial. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: With the introduction of endoscopy, gastrointestinal imaging with a relatively high radiation exposure had only limited applications. The development of cross-sectional imaging allowed a much broader radiological evaluation of abdominal diseases.

[Integrated gait analysis: a complex expert system approach to detailed data evaluation].

Integrated Gait Analysis is still not accepted as an important tool in a routine clinical environment because of its lack of assessment procedures closely based on the raw data measurements. Furthermore, an adequate treatment of the complex process of human movement is missing. This contribution is intended to successively describe the scheme of a dedicated approach for gait analysis data assessment. Therein, different technologies already discussed in the literature have been used. Some examples are given for the purpose of illustration. To provide in advance sufficiently different and well-k

Comprehensive evaluation of ten deformable image registration algorithms for contour propagation between CT and cone-beam CT images in adaptive head & neck radiotherapy.

Deformable image registration (DIR) is a critical technic in adaptive radiotherapy (ART) for propagating contours between planning computerized tomography (CT) images and treatment CT/cone-beam CT (CBCT) images to account for organ deformation for treatment re-planning. To validate the ability and accuracy of DIR algorithms in organ at risk (OAR) contour mapping, ten intensity-based DIR strategies, which were classified into four categories-optical flow-based, demons-based, level-set-based and spline-based-were tested on planning CT and fractional CBCT images acquired from twenty-one head & ne

Filling the dead-time gap in zero echo time MRI: Principles compared.

PURPOSE: MRI of tissues with short coherence lifetimes T2 or T2* can be performed efficiently using zero echo time (ZTE) techniques such as algebraic ZTE, pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA), and water- and fat-suppressed proton projection MRI (WASPI). They share the principal challenge of recovering data in central k-space missed due to an initial radiofrequency dead time. The purpose of this study was to compare the three techniques directly, with a particular focus on their behavior in the presence of ultra-short-lived spins. METHODS: The most direct compariso

Neonatal and Infant Lung Disorders: Glossary, Practical Approach, and Diagnoses.

A multitude of lung disorders ranging from congenital and genetic anomalies to iatrogenic complications can affect the neonate or the infant within the first year of life. Neonatal and infant chest imaging, predominantly by plain radiography and computed tomography, is frequently employed to aid in diagnosis and management; however, these disorders can be challenging to differentiate due to their broad-ranging, and frequently overlapping radiographic features. A systematic and practical approach to imaging interpretation which includes recognition of radiologic patterns, utilization of commonl
