[Stimulation of the secretory IgA system in monkeys by parenteral immunization with a ribosomal Sonne dysentery vaccine].

The experiment was made on 16 monkeys (rhesus macaques). Only 1 out of 12 monkeys immunized with S. sonnei ribosomal vaccine and all 4 control monkeys fell ill as the result of oral challenge with S. sonnei virulent strain. The immunized monkeys stopped excreting Shigellae earlier than the control monkeys. Antibody to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the serum and saliva of the monkeys were studied in the enzyme immunoassay with monospecific antibodies to human IgA, IgG and IgM. A single injection of the ribosomal vaccine in a dose of 600 micrograms was shown to lead to a considerable increase in t

Autoimmune hepatitis following influenza virus vaccination: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Although immunization could possibly cause autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), to date, no cases of AIH have been reported secondary to influenza virus vaccination. This paper describes 2 women who developed AIH after receiving influenza virus vaccination. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: Two women presented with elevation of liver enzymes after receiving influenza virus vaccination. Both patients were diagnosed with AIH using the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group criteria. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOMES: Both patients were treated with prednisolone. After the initiation of prednisolone,

Local and humoral immune responses against primary and repeat Neisseria gonorrhoeae genital tract infections of 17beta-estradiol-treated mice.

The 17beta-estradiol-treated mouse model is the only small animal model of gonococcal genital tract infection. Here we show gonococci localized within vaginal and cervical tissue, including the lamina propria, and high numbers of neutrophils and macrophages in genital tissue from infected mice. Infection did not induce a substantial or sustained increase in total or gonococcal-specific antibodies. Mice could be reinfected with the same strain and repeat infection did not boost the antibody response. However, intravaginal immunization of estradiol-treated mice induced gonococcal-specific primar

Tolerizing effect of DNP-ficoll on IgE antibody production.

A/J and DBA/1 mice were infected with 750 third-stage larvae of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and immunized with 1 mug dinitrophenylated N. brasiliensis extract (DNP-Nb) with 1 mg Al(OH)3 to produce high titers of anti-hapten IgG1 and IgE antibody. Partial tolerance to the production of anti-hapten IgG1 and IgE antibody could be induced by DNP-Ficoll from 5 weeks before to 1 week after the DNP-Nb immunization. The tolerized state persisted through the duration of the experiments. However, no tolerizing effect could be demonstrated on secondary antihapten IgE antibody production induced by DNP-N

Carrier effect by Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection on rat antihapten IgE antibody response.

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection was found to be highly effective in inducing a carrier-specific enhancing effect on primary and secondary antihapten IgE antibody response in the rat, when animals were immunized i.p. with 10 mug of dinitrophenylated N. brasiliensis protein (DNP-Nb) plus 10 mg Al(OH)3 2 weeks after the infection. The carrier effect by the infection was much greater than that obtained by any other supplementary immunization with the carrier (Nb) plus adjuvant, so far examined, in terms of the IgE antibody response. The results, together with our previous observation in the

Suppressant effect of procarbazine and its comparison with anti-lymphocyte serum in adjuvant-induced polyarthritis in rats.

Procarbazine, a new immunosuppressant, was active in inhibiting the lesions of experimental arthritis in rats. In comparison with anti-lymphocyte serum it was somewhat more effective in suppressing the secondary than the primary lesion of adjuvant-induced disease. The anti-inflammatory action of procarbazine could not be correlated exactly with its immunosuppressant effect. The dosage scheme which began 21 days before immunization and which had the greater effect on the immune response, did not have any greater anti-arthritic effect than the dosage scheme started on day 0. Anti-lymphocyte seru

Sustained salivary IgG but short-lived IgA responses following primary and booster MenACWY-TT vaccination in older adults.

Carriage of Neisseria meningitidis is essential in meningococcal transmission and is a prerequisite for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). Meningococcal conjugate vaccines have been suggested to reduce acquisition of carriage in adolescents and young adults, contributing to herd protection. Mucosal immunity is considered key in protection against colonization. While mucosal antibody responses following parenteral meningococcal conjugate vaccination have been described in infants, adolescents and young adults, data in older adults, who are at increased risk for infectious diseases including

COVID-19 Vaccine-Induced Radiation Recall Phenomenon.

Radiation recall phenomenon (RRP) is an uncommon, late occurring, acute inflammatory skin reaction that emerges in localized areas coincident with previously irradiated radiation therapy (RT) treatment fields. RRP has been known to be triggered by a number of chemotherapy agents. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first description of RRP after administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for COVID-19, or any other currently available vaccine against COVID-19. Acute skin reactions were observed in 2 RT patients with differing timelines of RT and vaccinations. In both cases howev

Poly(diaminosulfide) Microparticle-Based Vaccine for Delivery of Leptospiral Antigens.

Leptospirosis is a debilitating infectious disease that detrimentally affects both animals and humans; therefore, disease prevention has become a high priority to avoid high incidence rates of disease in the herd and break the transmission cycle to humans. Thus, there remains an important unmet need for a prophylactic vaccine that can provide long-term immunity against leptospirosis in cattle. Herein, a novel vaccine formulation was developed where poly(diaminosulfide) polymer was employed to fabricate microparticles encapsulating the antigen of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo strain

Humoral immune response of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors against the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination.

BACKGROUND: There is a great risk of infection with viral-vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) infections after the end of chemotherapy treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which could have been prevented with MMR vaccination. Previous studies reported widely variable rates of seropositivity (seroprotection) for MMR after ALL treatment ends. Also, few studies evaluated the response to MMR booster vaccinations after the end of ALL treatment and reported unclear and difficult to interpret results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective

Prolonging herd immunity to cholera via vaccination: Accounting for human mobility and waning vaccine effects.

BACKGROUND: Oral cholera vaccination is an approach to preventing outbreaks in at-risk settings and controlling cholera in endemic settings. However, vaccine-derived herd immunity may be short-lived due to interactions between human mobility and imperfect or waning vaccine efficacy. As the supply and utilization of oral cholera vaccines grows, critical questions related to herd immunity are emerging, including: who should be targeted; when should revaccination be performed; and why have cholera outbreaks occurred in recently vaccinated populations? METHODS AND FINDINGS: We use mathematical mo

Persistence of Bactericidal Antibodies After Infant Serogroup B Meningococcal Immunization and Booster Dose Response at 12, 18 or 24 Months of Age.

BACKGROUND: A serogroup B meningococcal vaccine (4CMenB) is licensed for infant use in countries including Canada, Australia and those of the European Union. Data on serum bactericidal antibody (hSBA) waning and the ideal timing of a "toddler" booster dose are essential to optimize vaccine utilization. METHODS: An open-labeled, multicenter phase-2b follow-on European study conducted from 2009 to 2012. Participants previously receiving 4CMenB with routine vaccines at 2, 4 and 6 or 2, 3 and 4 months (246Con and 234Con) or at 2, 4 and 6 months intercalated with routine vaccines (246Int) received

Safety and immunogenicity of modified vaccinia Ankara as a smallpox vaccine in people with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Following vaccination with traditional smallpox vaccines or after exposure to vaccinated individuals, subjects with atopic dermatitis (AD) can develop eczema vaccinatum, a severe disease with disseminated eruption of pustular contagious lesions. Alternative smallpox vaccines with an improved safety profile would address this unmet medical need. METHODS: An open-label controlled Phase I clinical trial was conducted to investigate the safety and immunogenicity of modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) in 15 healthy subjects compared to 45 subjects with either mild allergic rhinitis, a histo

Immunogenicity and safety of four different dosing regimens of anthrax vaccine adsorbed for post-exposure prophylaxis for anthrax in adults.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to implement post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in case of an anthrax bioterror event are needed. To increase the number of doses of vaccine available we evaluated reducing the amount of vaccine administered at each of the vaccinations, and reducing the number of doses administered. METHODS: Healthy male and non-pregnant female subjects between the ages of 18 and 65 were enrolled and randomized 1:1:1:1 to one of four study arms to receive 0.5 mL (standard dose) of vaccine subcutaneously (SQ) at: (A) days 0, 14; (B) days 0 and 28; (C) days 0, 14, and 28; or (D) 0.25 mL at d

Intradermally administered yellow fever vaccine at reduced dose induces a protective immune response: a randomized controlled non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of yellow fever vaccination is currently hampered by limited supply of vaccine. An alternative route of administration with reduced amounts of vaccine but without loss of vaccine efficacy would boost vaccination programmes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial was conducted in a Dutch university center between August 2005 and February 2007. A total of 155 primary vaccinated and 20 previously vaccinated volunteers participated. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1ratio1 ratio to receive intradermal (i.d.) vaccination with live a
