Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by impaired antibody responses, recurrent infections, inflammatory, autoimmune and malignancy-related conditions. We evaluated the relationship between memory B cell phenotype, sex, age at diagnosis, immunologic and clinical conditions in 105 CVID subjects from one medical center. Most Schistosoma mansoni infections are egg-negative after a single dose of oxamniquine. A cohort of 661 infected children was treated at 6-month intervals and assessed for nutritional and parasitological status. Although suppressive therapy for onchocerciasis with intermittent ivermectin prevents the development of pathology in endemic populations, the clinical and immunologic effects of therapy in the absence of continued exposure are unknown. Whipple's disease is a systemic illness caused by a specific agent. Despite recognition of bacteria in lesions, efforts to isolate the causative agent remained futile. A novel strategy was devised to culture Whipple bacilli in deactivated mononuclear phagocytes. Infected tissue was inoculated into human phagocytes deactivated with interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, and dexamethasone. 270 unilateral and bilateral neck resections have been performed in different primary localisations of tumours in the head and the neck at the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Medical Faculty in Zagreb in the period 1960-70. Of 209 patients with unilateral resection, only 78 survived (37%), while only 3 patients (4.9%) survived of a total of 61 patients where bilateral resection was performed.
