A Scientific Program in Regenerative Engineering (ASPIRE): A Prospective Program Aimed at Tackling Health Disparities in the USA.

The continued low numbers of Blacks in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) represent an American crisis that threatens growing awareness and efforts to effectively address health disparities that affect the Black population. Regenerative engineering is an emerging STEMM field that seeks to combine principles from engineering, life sciences, physics, and medicine to develop new technologies for repairing and regenerating damaged tissues and organs. We believe that regenerative engineering has the potential to address some of the root causes of health disparities

Recurrent outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis associated with calves among students at an educational farm programme, Minnesota, 2003.

Enteric illness outbreaks among middle-/high-school students in consecutive semesters of an educational farm programme were investigated with retrospective cohort studies. During the first outbreak, 31/92 (34%) interviewed students were ill. Risk factors included participating in animal science class (RR 8.1, 95% CI 1.2-55.2) and contact with calves (RR 4.2, 95% CI 1.1-16.2). Stool samples from seven students and two calves yielded Cryptosporidium parvum. Students cared for animals in street clothes and practised poor hand washing. During the second outbreak, 37/81 (46%) interviewed animal sci

Artificial intelligence for predicting perioperative anaesthetic complications and supporting clinical decision-making: a scoping review.

Perioperative anaesthetic complications are a major public health concern, as they are associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospital stay, higher healthcare costs, and compromised patient safety. Despite advances in perioperative monitoring and risk stratification, early and personalised identification of patients at risk remains limited. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising approach to improve prediction of perioperative anaesthetic complications, although current evidence is heterogeneous. To synthesise the available evidence on the use of artificial intelligence

Rethinking Phase I units in the era of immuno-oncology: a three-layer framework.

The rapid expansion of immuno-oncology (I-O) and other advanced therapies is reshaping the complexity of early-phase clinical development. While core Phase I principles remain fundamental across oncology, emerging modalities introduce additional requirements for translational integration, specialized safety management, and therapeutic-specific infrastructure. However, the organizational functions of Phase I units have not evolved at the same pace and remain largely centered on conventional operational responsibilities. Drawing on the practices of leading Phase I units across the USA, Europe, a

Applied behavioral and decision sciences in support of US FDA's drug regulatory mission.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) makes and communicates decisions that directly affect the health choices and well-being of the US public. Behavioral and decision scientists have long supported FDA's pharmaceutical (medical drug) regulatory and public health mission, working alongside clinical and pharmaceutical scientists. This Perspective describes four interrelated cases illustrating these collaborations: a) creating the Benefit-Risk Framework to guide regulatory decisions regarding new drug approvals; b) launching an internal decision support service to facilitate specific regulat

Self-directed learning journeys of Canadian teachers around the science of reading.

The popularization of the science of reading (SoR) has been bolstered by the bottom-up, grassroots work of teachers who are engaging in independent learning about the evidence base around reading development and instruction. Canadian teachers, like many of their colleagues in other parts of the world, have undertaken self-directed learning (SDL) about SoR; such a large number of educators independently choosing to learn about the same topic is an uncommon phenomenon in education. We conducted five focus groups with a total of 21 Canadian educators, using a qualitative descriptive design to inv

Usability and social consequences of the early identification system as a universal screener for social, emotional, and behavioral risks.

The Early Identification System (EIS) was developed to overcome many of the usability challenges of school-based behavior screeners. Several prior studies have documented the technical adequacy of the EIS. The present study expanded this work by examining the use, relevance, values implications, and social consequence of EIS implementation in a sample of 54 K-12 schools and 23,104 students in the Midwestern United States. We found that nearly all schools, teachers, and students completed the EIS as planned. Schools used the data to provide universal, selective, and indicated services to a high

Anti-racist interventions to transform ecology, evolution and conservation biology departments.

Racial and ethnic discrimination persist in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, including ecology, evolution and conservation biology (EECB) and related disciplines. Marginalization and oppression as a result of institutional and structural racism continue to create barriers to inclusion for Black people, Indigenous people and people of colour (BIPOC), and remnants of historic racist policies and pseudoscientific theories continue to plague these fields. Many academic EECB departments seek concrete ways to improve the climate and implement anti-racist policies in their tea
