INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The number of illicit drug users incarcerated in Sri Lanka has been growing over the last decade. This paper presents drug-use characteristics and risk-taking behaviours among a group of male incarcerated drug users.
DESIGN AND METHODS: An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was completed by 278 drug users in three prisons in Sri Lanka.

Treatment results of 31 patients with incarcerated postoperative ventral hernias were analyzed. Mesh hernia repair was used in all cases. Signs of hernia incarceration or intestinal obstructions were absolute indications for surgical treatment. Appendicitis and incarcerated hernia are frequently encountered reasons of emergency surgery for acute abdomen. The treatment in early stages of each condition is generally simple, but when these conditions are combined, the symptoms become slightly complicated, obscuring specific symptoms. Inguinal herniorraphy is the most common surgical procedure in the United States. Intra-abdominal testicles and cryptorchidism can be seen in children with widely patent processus vaginalis. Testicular torsion is a surgical emergency that can be corrected without sacrificing the testicle if treated early and appropriately. No previous case has been reported with an adult's testicle having become incarcerated in the omentum contained within an indirect inguinal hernia sac simulating a possible testicular torsion.

Inner-city male adolescents in jail in New York City (N = 427) were interviewed to examine correlates of cocaine or crack use. Twenty-three percent had used cocaine or crack in the month before arrest and 32% reported lifetime use. PURPOSE: Incarcerated adolescents are at increased risk for infection by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Moreover, condom use by this population is extremely low. Although interpersonal variables such as sexual communication have been found to be associated with condom use in other populations, few researchers have investigated this relationship among adolescents requiring detention in juvenile facilities.
