Characteristics of tuberculosis in HIV-infected patients: a case-control study.

To test the hypothesis that HIV infection can modify the clinical characteristics of tuberculosis, 65 consecutive cases of tuberculosis in HIV-seropositive patients diagnosed in Barcelona (Spain) were compared with 65 HIV-seronegative controls matched for age and sex. Thirty of the 65 cases were accepted as AIDS cases (August 1987 Centers for Disease Control criteria) only because of the tuberculosis. Among the cases 54 (83%) were parenteral drug addicts and 88% were males. The tuberculosis was pulmonary or pleural in 62 controls (96%) but in only 25 cases (39%; P less than 0.0001). Lymph node

[The importance of chemoantibiotic resistance in controlling infections disease (author's transl)].

The AA. examine those mechanisms which might determine the phenomenon of drug resistance in microorganism. They then review those infections of interest to public health. Diseases such as meningococcus, enterobacterial and vibro infections frequently show chemoantibiotic resistance. The AA. procede to point out the problems which may arise during therapy or prophylaxis. Some measures are then reported as necessary in order to prevent or retard the development of drug resistance in microorganism.

Control trial of soil-transmitted helminthic infections with pyrantel pamoate.

Pyrantel pamoate at dosage of 10 mg per kilogramme body weight was given to each villager at 4-6 weeks intervals for three times. The infection rates of hookworms among those who received and did not received the drug decreased from 60.5% pre-treatment to 19.6% after the third treatment and then increased to 32.4% one year after the third treatment. Infection rates of A. lumbricoides and Strongyloides spp. among the villagers who received and did not received the drug decreased from 27.5% pre-treatment to 2.2% after the third treatment and then increased to 20.1% one year later for the former,

Global randomised controlled trials in infection prevention and control: a bibliographic review from the past two decades.

BACKGROUND: Infection prevention and control (IPC) evidence is imperative to reduce healthcare-associated infections, yet IPC guidelines often rely on low-level evidence due to challenges in conducting rigorous randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Understanding long-term research trends can clarify strengths, gaps, and priorities. Therefore, this bibliometric review aimed to identify trends and patterns in IPC RCTs over the past 20 years. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the Scopus database between January 2002 and September 2025. RCTs in IPC were included. Identified studies wer

Pediatric gastrointestinal surgical site infections: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a significant source of morbidity in children. Elevated standardized infection ratios (SIRs) for pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) procedures persist nationally and at our institution. We assessed pediatric-specific risk factors and the applicability of the adult SIR model. DESIGN: Case-control study of pediatric patients undergoing GI surgery (2019-2022) with 82 SSI cases matched 1:2 with 164 controls by prematurity, age, National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) procedure category and year. Data was collected via chart review; socioeconomic ri

Quorum sensing inhibition strategies for the control of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe and persistent infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Its high adaptability and antibiotic resistance are largely mediated by quorum sensing (QS), a cell-to-cell communication system that coordinates the expression of virulence factors and biofilm formation. Targeting QS-rather than bacterial viability-has emerged as a promising antivirulence strategy known as quorum quenching (QQ). This review analyses current QQ approaches against P. aeruginosa, emphasizing their mechanisms, efficacy, and translational

Multi-objective control to schedule therapies for acute viral infections.

Antiviral therapies can yield different outcomes depending on their scheduling: a highly effective drug may produce treatment results ranging from successful to inconsequential, depending on therapeutic timing, dosing intervals, and dosage. The effectiveness of antiviral therapies can be assessed using mathematical models that describe viral spread within a host. In this work, we conduct a study based on the dynamic characterization of a target-cell model to address a multi-objective control problem aimed at designing highly effective and host-customizable antiviral therapies. These therapies

Daily Mosnodenvir as Dengue Prophylaxis in a Controlled Human Infection Model.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half the worldwide population is at risk for dengue. No antiviral prophylaxis or treatment options are available. METHODS: In a phase 2a, double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned healthy adults to receive oral mosnodenvir once daily as a low dose (40-mg loading dose followed by 10-mg maintenance dose), medium dose (200 mg followed by 50 mg), or high dose (600 mg followed by 200 mg) or matched placebo. Loading doses were given for 5 days and maintenance doses for 21 days. In a controlled human infection model, participants received subcutaneous inoculation of an un

Brucella-driven host N-glycome remodeling controls infection.

Many powerful methods have been employed to elucidate the global transcriptomic, proteomic, or metabolic responses to pathogen-infected host cells. However, the host glycome responses to bacterial infection remain largely unexplored, and hence, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which bacterial pathogens manipulate the host glycome to favor infection remains incomplete. Here, we address this gap by performing a systematic analysis of the host glycome during infection by the bacterial pathogen Brucella spp. that cause brucellosis. We discover, surprisingly, that a Brucella effecto

Shigella-Controlled Human Infection Models: Current and Future Perspectives.

Shigella-controlled human infection models (CHIMs) are an invaluable tool utilized by the vaccine community to combat one of the leading global causes of infectious diarrhea, which affects infants, children and adults regardless of socioeconomic status. The impact of shigellosis disproportionately affects children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) resulting in cognitive and physical stunting, perpetuating a cycle that must be halted. Shigella-CHIMs not only facilitate the early evaluation of enteric countermeasures and up-selection of the most promising products but also provide insi

Controlling Chronic Diseases and Acute Infections with Vitamin D Sufficiency.

Apart from developmental disabilities, the prevalence of chronic diseases increases with age especially in those with co-morbidities: vitamin D deficiency plays a major role in it. Whether vitamin D deficiency initiates and/or aggravates chronic diseases or vice versa is unclear. It adversely affects all body systems but can be eliminated using proper doses of vitamin D supplementation and/or safe daily sun exposure. Maintaining the population serum 25(OH)D concentration above 40 ng/mL (i.e., sufficiency) ensures a sound immune system, minimizing symptomatic diseases and reducing infections an

Controlled-release hydromorphone and risk of infection in adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests that people who inject drugs (PWID) may be at an increased risk of developing infective endocarditis (IE), hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and/or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection from hydromorphone controlled-release formulation. The hypothesized mechanism is related to insolubility of the drug, which promotes reuse, leading to contamination of injecting equipment. However, this relationship has not been confirmed. We aimed to conduct a systematic review including adult PWID exposed to controlled-release hydromorphone and the risk of acq

USP8 inhibition regulates autophagy flux and controls Salmonella infection.

INTRODUCTION: Ubiquitination is an important protein modification that regulates various essential cellular processes, including the functions of innate immune cells. Deubiquitinases are enzymes responsible for removing ubiquitin modification from substrates, and the regulation of deubiquitinases in macrophages during infection with Salmonella Typhimurium and Yersinia enterocolitica remains unknown. METHODS: To identify deubiquitinases regulated in human macrophages during bacterial infection, an activity-based proteomics screen was conducted. The effects of pharmacological inhibition of the

Photodynamic therapy and combinatory treatments for the control of biofilm-associated infections.

The advent of antimicrobial resistance has added considerable impact to infectious diseases both in the number of infections and healthcare costs. Furthermore, the relentless emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly in the biofilm state, has made mandatory the discovery of new alternative antimicrobial therapies that are capable to eradicate resistant bacteria and impair the development of new forms of resistance. Amongst the therapeutic strategies for treating biofilms, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has shown great potential in inactivating several clinically releva

A feasibility study of controlled human infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Persistent carriage of pneumococcal vaccine serotypes has occurred after introduction of PCV13 vaccination in Africa but the mechanisms are unclear. We tested the feasibility of using a human pneumococcal challenge model in Malawi to understand immune correlates of protection against carriage and to trial alternative vaccine candidates. We aimed to identify a dose of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6B sufficient to establish nasopharyngeal carriage in 40% of those nasally inoculated and evaluate nasal mucosal immunity before and after experimental inoculation. METHODS: Healthy s

PET/CT in therapy control of infective native aortic aneurysms.

Infective native aortic aneurysms (INAA) are aneurysms arising from infection of the aortic wall. Treatment is demanding with 5-year survival rates between 53 and 55%. The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the long-term monitoring of patients with proven INAA. Fifty-three PET/CT were performed in 15 patients with INAA in this single-center retrospective cohort study and retrospective analysis of prospectively collected Vascular Graft Cohort Study (VASGRA) data. T-Bet Controls Susceptibility of Mice to Coxiella burnetii Infection.

T-bet is a transcription factor known to initiate and coordinate the gene expression program during Th1 differentiation, which is crucial for clearance of intracellular pathogens. Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. This bacterium is transmitted to humans by aerosol. Indeed, the inhibition of the Coxiella-specific adaptive Th1 immune response leads to persistent infection and organ injury. How deficiency of T-bet affects host infection by C. burnetii has not been investigated. Here, using mice with a deletion of the T-bet gene and an airborne mode of infection to repro
