Psychological flexibility or inflexibility: examining the distinct roles of these transdiagnostic factors in mild traumatic brain injury recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological flexibility (PF) and psychological inflexibility (PI) are transdiagnostic processes implicated in mental health outcomes, yet their distinct roles in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) recovery remain unclear. This study examined PF and PI in a treatment-seeking mTBI sample and tested whether these processes operate through distinct pathways linking post-concussion symptoms (PCS), functional disability, and psychological distress. METHOD: Participants were 173 adults with mTBI recruited from outpatient concussion rehabilitation services in New Zealand. Participants co

Unveiling new perspectives about the onset of neurological and cognitive deficits in cerebral malaria: exploring cellular and neurochemical mechanisms.

Cerebral malaria is the most severe and lethal complication caused by Plasmodium falciparum infection, leading to critical neurological impairments and long-term cognitive, behavioral, and neurological sequelae in survivors, particularly affecting children under the age of five. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain the neurological syndrome associated to cerebral malaria condition, including vascular occlusion and sequestration, cytokine storm or inflammatory response, or a combination of these mechanisms and despite extensive research and a growing range of scientific information,

Connecting the Past and Present: An Updated Literature Review of Aquagenic Syringeal Acrokeratoderma.

Aquagenic syringeal acrokeradermatoma (ASA) is a dermatological condition characterized by the transient appearance of edematous, white, translucent papules on the palms, typically triggered by water exposure. While ASA is most commonly associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) and predominantly affects young females, there has been a significant increase in ASA cases since the most recent update in 2015. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the number of patients diagnosed with ASA following exposure to the viral infection. The growing body of literature suggests a multifactorial etiology for ASA, with

The association of military sexual assault and nonsuicidal self-injury in U.S. Gulf War-I era veterans.

Military sexual assault (MSA) is a prevalent issue among military personnel that has been linked to adverse mental and physical health outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The present study sought to investigate the relationship between MSA and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in a national sample of Gulf War-I Era U.S. veterans. The study analyzed data from 1,153 Gulf War-I veterans collected through a cross-sectional survey that assessed demographic information, clinical outcomes, military background, and history of MSA and NSSI. MSA was

Mercury cyanide complexes and their relevance as environmental contaminants.

This review addresses the formation and relevance of mercury cyanide complexes as environmental contaminants. Gold extraction is traditionally carried out through the process of mercury amalgamation (Hg) due to its simplicity and low cost. However, this process is inefficient, capturing only about 30% of the gold present in the processed material. Additionally, mercury is toxic, mobile, and capable of accumulating in aquatic ecosystems, leading to its prohibition in several countries. As an alternative, cyanidation has been widely used in gold extraction. However, the frequent combination of H

Artificial Intelligence and Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging.

This review article aimed to highlight the application and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging in ophthalmology. Artificial intelligence programs seek to simulate intelligent human behavior in computers. With an abundance of patient data, especially with the advent and growing use of imaging modalities such as OCT, AI programs provide us with the unique opportunity to analyze this plethora of information and assist in making clinical decisions in the field of ophthalmology. Groups around the world have developed and evaluated AI programs that gathe

Biochemical marker of use is a better predictor of outcomes than self-report metrics in a contingency management smoking cessation analog study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This investigation compared cotinine (primary metabolite of nicotine) at study intake to self-report metrics (e.g., Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence [FTND]) and assessed their relative ability to predict smoking outcomes. METHODS: We used data from an analog model of contingency management for cigarette smoking. Non-treatment seeking participants (N = 103) could earn money in exchange for provision of a negative carbon monoxide (CO) sample indicating smoking abstinence, but were otherwise not motivated to quit. We used intake cotinine, FTND, percent of friends

Shared Experience Versus Professional Expertise: Preferences for Features of Informal and Formal Mental Health Support Among College Students.

Informal caregiving serves vital functions in the USA, filling important gaps in formal care systems. However, informal caregiving for psychological disorders has received relatively limited research attention. In this study, we evaluated perspectives towards informal and formal caregiving in a sample of 554 college students attending a large public university in the Deep South and contrasted the relative importance of care elements in the context of informal and formal care. Results from evaluation of preferred elements of care between informal care and formal care were consistent with person

Aberrations of anterior insular cortex functional connectivity in nontreatment-seeking alcoholics.

An emergent literature suggests that resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) functional connectivity (FC) patterns are aberrant in alcohol use disorder (AUD) populations. The salience network (SAL) is an established set of brain regions prominent in salience attribution and valuation, and includes the anterior insular cortex (AIC). The SAL is thought to play a role in AUD through directing increased attention to interoceptive cues of intoxication. There is very little information on the salience network (SAL) in AUD, and, in particular, there are no data on SAL FC in curre

HIV testing among immigrant sexual and gender minority Latinos in a US region with little historical Latino presence.

Immigrant sexual and gender minority Latinos constitute a vulnerable subgroup about which little is known. We examined HIV testing among 190 such Latinos recruited via respondent-driven sampling in North Carolina, a state with little historical Latino presence but recent, rapid growth of this population. Sixty-eight percent reported an HIV test in the past year, and nearly half reported multiple HIV tests. Concern for their health was the most frequent reason for seeking an HIV test. Reasons not to get tested included fear of a positive test, previous HIV tests, worry that test results might b

The five-factor model of personality and sexual functioning in outpatient men and women.

454 adults seeking evaluation at a sexual behaviors consultation clinic were evaluated for the major dimensions of personality as measured by the NEO Personality Inventory and various aspects of sexual attitudes and experiences via the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory. The results showed that elevated Neuroticism was correlated with dysphoric symptoms, negative body image and lowered satisfaction. More extraverted individuals reported increased drive, more sexual experience, positive body image, and more positive affects. Agreeableness was unrelated to sexual drive and satisfaction but w

Breast Cancer Myths, Mysterious Miracles and Mistrust among Rural Womenfolk in Sarawak.

BACKGROUND: Sarawak hospitals report high rates of advanced cancer among women in remote rural areas. Cultural beliefs, low awareness, socio-economic challenges, geographical barriers, and the lack of specialist cancer care contribute to late diagnoses, particularly in breast cancer, exacerbating disparities in access to timely treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore cultural beliefs, barriers, and healthcare access challenges influencing breast cancer awareness and screening among Sarawak's indigenous and rural communities. METHODS: This qualitative study explores how rural Sarawa

Patterns of Distress and Supportive Resource Use by Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background/Objectives: Healthcare workers (HCW) have increased the risk of occupational stress injuries and adverse mental health outcomes, which were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding HCW psychological distress patterns and help-seeking behaviors can inform responsive resource development that may mitigate negative outcomes in future crises. This paper provides insights on monthly trends in HCW distress and support utilization at a large Canadian hospital over a 14-month period. Methods: As part of a hospital-wide wellness initiative during COVID-19, the STEADY program e

Emergency contraceptive pills: a review of the recent literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to inform the reader of new information published since early 2003 about emergency contraception, with a particular focus on issues of access. RECENT FINDINGS: Research continues to document low but increasing levels of knowledge about emergency contraception, increasing use, and more positive attitudes towards emergency contraception by both patients and healthcare providers. Additional information is available about efficacy and mechanisms of action. More reports of side-effects have been published, as have studies relating to the impact of e

Health care and harm reduction provider perspectives on treating older adults who use non-medical opioids: a qualitative study set in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose death rates are increasing for adults aged 55 and older, with especially high rates in large urban areas. In parallel, admissions to treatment programs for older adults using illicit substances are increasing as well. Despite these trends, there is a lack of information about older adults who use non-medical opioids (NMO) and even less knowledge about their health and service encounters. Conducted in Chicago, Illinois, this qualitative study explores the perspectives of health care and harm reduction service providers who work with older adults using non-medical opi

Health workers' disrespectful and abusive behaviour towards women during labour and delivery: A qualitative study in Durban, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of disrespectful and abusive behaviour by health workers towards women during labour and delivery has been widely described in health facilities, particularly in Africa, and is a worldwide public health concern. Such behaviours are barriers to care-seeking, and are associated with adverse outcomes for mothers and newborns. This paper reports experiences of disrespectful care among informal working women in three public health facilities in Durban, South Africa. METHODS: A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted among a cohort of informal working women recrui

Long-term impact of disclosing amyloid PET results to individuals with subjective cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Biomarker assessments increasingly inform the diagnostic evaluation and treatment decisions in Alzheimer disease (AD). However, evidence on the impact of amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) disclosure is primarily derived from studies of cognitively unimpaired trial participants with follow-up limited to 18 months. In contrast, long-term implications for individuals with cognitive concerns who seek medical evaluation in memory clinics remain unknown. We aimed to examine the psychosocial and behavioral impact three years after amyloid PET disclosure in individuals presenting
