Portraying Mixed-Agenda Couples: Insights From Large-Scale Data Sets.

This study investigates "mixed-agenda" couples characterized by significant discrepancies in commitment and therapy goals, using both clinical and non-clinical data sets. While theoretical frameworks suggest these couples present unique challenges for treatment planning and therapy outcomes, empirical data on their prevalence have remained limited. We analyzed data from the National Couples' Health and Time Study (NCHAT) and the Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network (MFT-PRN) to identify groups of couples that might practically be classified as mixed-agenda couples. Findings re

Does Your Love Lift Me Higher? A Direct Replication of the Energising Role of Secure Relationships.

Previous work has revealed that priming people with significant others increases feelings of security and energy, and in turn, boosts exploration motivations. In this preregistered study, we directly replicated Luke et al.'s (2012) Study 2 (N = 281). We found similar results as the replicated study regarding increased security feelings and exploration motivations on the self-report measures after the priming. However, we did not find any support for the increased energy feelings after the attachment security priming. In addition, contrary to Luke et al.'s (2012) results, energy feelings did no

The Fabric of Connection? Exploratory Studies on Being Moved in Committed Relationships.

Being moved, also known as kama muta, is an emotion associated with warmth and social connectedness. Although theoretical accounts posit that it may contribute to the development and maintenance of romantic relationships by fostering intimacy, affirming commitment, and reinforcing shared values, empirical research remains limited. To address this gap, we conducted three studies. Study I explored the situational effects of recalling touching events on relationship satisfaction. Building on this, Study II examined whether proneness to being moved is associated with relationship satisfaction, and

Jealousy: An Emotional Schema Model.

Jealousy is a universal emotion related to evolutionary pressures relevant to parental investment. In this article, we examine how jealousy can be treated using an integrative CBT model called Emotional Schema Therapy, which is a social cognitive model emphasizing the patient's theories and strategies about emotion and draws upon evolutionary, attachment, cognitive, and acceptance models. The phenomenology of jealousy is seen as part of this automatic response triggered by perceived threats to attachment relationships. This therapeutic approach fosters a more adaptive approach that would allow

Are there perils of partialing marital conflict behaviors? Comparisons of interpersonal correlates.

Statistical adjustments (i.e., partialing) for between-partner correlations on the same variable and for correlations among multiple predictors within individuals are common in relationship research. Although useful, partialing can alter the construct validity or meaning of measured variables in ways that are typically not considered. In this study of 300 middle-aged and older couples, unadjusted, partner-partialed, partialed warmth and hostility component, and common fate model scores for observer-rated behavior during marital conflict discussions were compared using interpersonal circumplex-

Peer interactions in autistic children and adolescents: A systematic review.

Peer interaction plays a central role in social, emotional, and cognitive development across childhood and adolescence. For autistic individuals, difficulties in peer interaction are a defining feature and are associated with reduced participation, limited social learning, and adverse outcomes such as loneliness, rejection, and isolation. Despite its importance, the literature on peer interactions in autism remains fragmented, employing diverse measures, age groups, and study designs, with inconsistent attention to individual and environmental factors. The aim of this systematic review was to

Relationship quality among people living with HIV/AIDS: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the existing literature on the factors associated with relationship quality among people living with HIV (PLWH). METHOD: A structured literature search was performed on APA PsycArticles, ProQuest and PubMed for quantitative, peer-reviewed studies published in English between 1994 and March 2025. Fifteen studies (N = 2579; 78% men, predominantly in serodiscordant couples) met the inclusion criteria and contributed 76 effect sizes, which were categorized as either protective or risk factors for relationship quality

Short-Term Mating Orientation Predicts Openness to "Sugar Relationships" More Than Life History Strategy.

Life history theory suggests that individuals vary in their sexual, reproductive, parental, familial, and social behavior in response to the physical and social challenges encountered during development. So-called "sugar relationships" generally involve exchanges of resources for sex and/or companionship between a younger partner and an older provider. This research aimed to explore the relationship between openness to sugar relationships and life history strategy. A total of 312 participants (192 women, 120 men) completed an extensive online questionnaire, including scales such as the Accepta

What is the current state of the research literature examining the impact of the motor neurone disease journey on the couple's relationship? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Motor neurone disease (MND) results in complex and disabling symptoms that give rise to significant and challenging care needs. While much of the care required is typically provided by the partner of the individual who has been diagnosed with MND, there are few studies that have investigated the impact of MND on the couple's relationship. OBJECTIVES: To establish the current state of the research literature examining the impact of MND on the couple's relationship. METHODS: A scoping review was undertaken with thematic analysis used to synthesize the data. RESULTS: The scoping re

Relational Safety and Transactional Intervention: Victim-Survivors' Feelings of Safety and Risk.

This article explores what safety means to women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). From a feminist relational lens, we explore data from in-depth, narrative interviews with women who experienced severe IPV and perspectives of family and friends of those who were killed, to identify experiences that feel safe and those that do not. Other research focuses on ways and factors that enhance safety, whereas ours allows the exploration of differences in what makes someone feel safe. We argue that criminal justice interventions are perceived negatively due to their transactional nature, wh

Re-examining Spontaneous Trait Transference from an Attributional Perspective.

In spontaneous trait transference (STT), communicators describing the behavior of others (i.e., actors) are perceived as having the personality traits implied by the behavior they describe. We tested whether this effect relies on moderators that are indicative of rule-based, attributional processes: the communicator-actor relation (friends vs. enemies; Experiment 1), the diagnosticity of the statement for inferring the implied trait to the communicator (Experiment 2), and the validity of the statement (i.e., whether it was actually provided by the communicator; Experiment 3). In line with attr

An fNIRS hyperscanning dataset on the modulation of synchrony by social relationship during social touch.

Social touch from a close companion, such as a friend, can effectively buffer stress, an effect modulated by the nature of the social relationship. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this modulation, particularly the dynamics between interacting brains, remain poorly understood due to a lack of suitable open data. We present a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning dataset from 47 female dyads (24 friend pairs, 23 stranger pairs) who jointly viewed negative and neutral images under touching and no-touching conditions. The dataset includes raw and preprocessed fNIRS

Attachment Dimensions and Infertility: Exploring Psychological Outcomes Through Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the role of romantic attachment as a protective or risk factor in how individuals cope with infertility diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. A systematic search was conducted across six databases from January 1, 2011, to February 3, 2025. Seventeen studies met inclusion criteria, exploring associations between romantic attachment and individual psychological correlates of infertility. Seven studies examining links between attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and infertility-related stress were included in a meta-analysis. Findings highlight signif

Favoritism or bias? Cooperation and competition under different intergroup relationships: evidence from EEG hyperscanning.

Cooperation and competition are the most common forms of social interaction in various social relationships. Intergroup relationships have been posited to influence individuals' interpersonal interactions significantly. Using electroencephalography hyperscanning, this study aimed to establish whether intergroup relationships influence interpersonal cooperation and competition and the underlying neural mechanisms. According to the results, the in-group Coop-index is better than the out-group, whereas the out-group Comp-index is stronger than the in-group. The in-group functional connectivity be

The Use of Dance and Movement for the Embodied Healing of Interpersonal Trauma in Women and Girls: A Systematic Review.

Interpersonal trauma is a pervasive issue with devastating consequences for women and girls of diverse identities. Research has shown that there are many potential physiological consequences for experiencing trauma, and as such, treatment for trauma should incorporate the body. Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) has been emerging in the current literature as one body-oriented treatment approach effective in helping women and girls heal from interpersonal trauma. This review uses textual narrative evidence synthesis to examine how practitioners are currently using DMT for this population, what treatm

Associations between frequency of exposure to peer-generated alcohol-related posts and alcohol use within a social network of college students.

Peer alcohol use, commonly assessed via perceptions of how many drinks peers consume, is a robust predictor of college drinking. These perceptions are formed by in-person exposure to peer drinking but also may be affected by seeing alcohol-related content (ARC) shared on peer social media accounts. Most research assesses exposure by asking about the frequency of ARC sharing by a whole friend group, potentially missing influences from specific friends. Social network methods collect information about specific friends and their behavior but few studies have used these methods to examine the effe

Examining the role of social relationships on health and health behaviors in African American men with prostate cancer: a qualitative analysis.

PURPOSE: Cancer survivor cohort studies document the positive impact of health behaviors on cancer survivorship by influencing quality of life, comorbidity burden, and cancer recurrence. Social networks can be instrumental in supporting health behavior changes. This study used qualitative interviews to explore how social networks may impact health and health behaviors of African American Prostate Cancer Survivors (AAPCS) enrolled in Men Moving Forward (MMF), a lifestyle intervention designed with and for AAPCS. Specifically, we sought to understand how different relationships within social net

People constrain their semantic associations when talking to both friends and strangers.

During conversations, people face a trade-off between establishing understanding and making interesting and unique contributions. How do people balance this when deciding which concepts to reference, and does it matter how well they know their conversation partner? In the present work, participants made stream-of-consciousness word associations either with a partner or alone-simplified versions of dialogue and monologue. Participants made semantically narrower and more predictable word associations with a stranger than alone (Study 1), suggesting that they constrain their associations to estab

Neural mechanisms distinguishing two types of cooperative problem-solving approaches: An fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Collaborative cooperation (CC) and division of labor cooperation (DLC) are two prevalent forms of cooperative problem-solving approaches in daily life. Despite extensive research on the neural mechanisms underlying cooperative problem-solving approaches, a notable gap exists between the neural processes that support CC and DLC. The present study utilized a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technique along with a classic cooperative tangram puzzle task to investigate the neural mechanisms engaged by both friends and stranger dyads during CC versus DLC. The key findings

Like yourself, and others will follow: The role of target self-esteem in the association between being seen accurately and being liked in platonic and romantic first impressions.

When meeting people for the first time, we often strive to perceive others and express our own personalities accurately. Does this benefit social connection by promoting greater perceiver liking of targets, or might it instead hinder liking for some targets and in some contexts? In the present studies, we examined whether the links between accuracy and perceiver liking differ as a function of target self-esteem across two first impression contexts: a speed-dating context (N = 378, N = 4,797 dyads) and a platonic getting-acquainted context (exploratory sample: N = 557, N = 2,924 dyads; preregis
