Absorption of magnesium and other macrominerals in sheep infused with potassium in different parts of the digestive tract.

Two metabolism trials were conducted with 12 crossbred wether lambs, each surgically equipped with a ruminal catheter and abomasal and ileal cannulae, to study the effect of K infusion in different sites of the digestive tract on site of absorption and flow of minerals. The treatments consisted of the infusion of 33.6, 12.0 or 12.0 g K/d as bicarbonate into either the rumen, abomasum or ileum, respectively. Each trial consisted of a minimum 5-d preliminary period, five 3-d collection periods to determine mineral balance and a 6-d sampling period to determine mineral flow and site of absorption

Improvement in specificity of [14C]d-xylose breath test for bacterial overgrowth.

The aim of the study was to determine whether the specificity of the [14C]d-xylose breath test could be improved, by excluding false-positive tests due to premature colonic metabolism of the [14C]d-xylose caused by rapid colonic transit. Forty-seven patients with suspected small bowel bacterial overgrowth were investigated by (1) aspiration and culture of duodenal fluid and (2) a [14C]d-xylose breath test. Those with either a positive duodenal culture or breath test had a repeat [14C]d-xylose breath test given with one of three transit markers (barium, Gastrografin or 99mTc-labeled tin colloid

Helicobacter pylori and hormones.

Helicobacter pylori affects gastric acid secretion via several mechanisms. One of these is by changing gastric regulatory physiology. The infection elevates plasma gastrin levels and decreases gastric mucosal expression of the inhibitory peptide somatostatin. These changes may be due to products of H. pylori itself or inflammatory cytokines released in H. pylori infection: acid secretion is inhibited less by a low intra-gastric pH, infusions of cholecystokinin and gastric distention in infected persons. Eradication of H. pylori rapidly decreases basal acid secretion and gastrin-releasing, pept

Influence of ursodeoxycholic acid on biliary lipids.

The advent of bile acid therapy has shed some light on the mechanisms involved in determining bile lipid secretion. The administration of cholelytic bile acids results in a lowering of cholesterol percent molar and saturation index due to a reduction in cholesterol secretion. Studies carried out after administration of bile acids showed initially that biliary cholesterol secretion rates were dependent on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the prevailing bile acid present in bile. However, more detailed investigations showed that some bile acids (cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids) did not f

Buffering properties of fish aquafeeds: concepts, determinants and effects on physiology and growth.

The present paper is a comprehensive review of the existing literature on aquafeed acid binding capacity (ABC), and its effects on the digestive physiology, metabolism, intestinal microbiota, and growth of farmed fishes. ABC can be defined as the quantity of acid (usually HCl) required to reduce diet pH to a specified endpoint, typically 3.0 (ABC-3) or 4.0 (ABC-4). The ABC of a diet may influence the secretion pattern and minimum gastric pH, as well as the total amount of HCl secreted during digestion. On the other hand, the acidity of the gastric lumen plays a crucial role in the digestive pr

Cholera Toxin Encapsulated within Several Vibrio cholerae O1 Serotype Inaba Outer Membrane Vesicles Lacks a Functional B-Subunit.

Cholera toxin (CT), the major virulence factor of Vibrio cholerae, is an AB5 toxin secreted through the type II secretion system (T2SS). Upon secretion, the toxin initiates endocytosis through the interaction of the B pentamer with the GM1 ganglioside receptor on small intestinal cells. In addition to the release of CT in the free form, the bacteria secrete CT in association with outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). Previously, we demonstrated that strain 569B releases OMVs that encapsulate CT and which interact with host cells in a GM1-independent mechanism. Here, we have demonstrated that OMV-enc

Exploiting Old Pathogens to Create New Therapeutics.

Intestinal worms are well known for their potent immuno-modulatory capacity. In a recent study, Navarro et al. (2016) identify a secreted hookworm protein that can suppress allergic responses in both mice and humans. This represents an exciting strategy for treating chronic inflammatory disorders such as allergy.

Pharmacological study of Stachytarpheta cayennensis Vahl in rodents.

Freeze-dried aqueous extracts (AEs, 0.1-1g/kg body wt., p.o.) obtained from entire or selected parts of Stachytarpheta cayennensis were tested for their effects on gastric secretion, gastric motility, inflammation and pain in rodents, with the purpose of validating the plant's ethnomedical uses. The AE-Total, AE-Flowers and AE-Leaves but not AE-Stems inhibited the gastric acid secretion in pylorus-ligated rats with varying potency. Purification of AEs yielded the semipurifed fractions EtFs rich in iridoids. All the EtFs with exception of EtF-Stems inhibited gastric acid secretion of pylorus li

Importance of the kidneys for gastrin elimination and gastric function.

1. The gastrin concentrations in serum were elevated after nephrectomy in rats and mice indicating the importance of the kidney for elimination of gastrin in these species. In guinea-pigs and rabbits nephrectomy did not cause increased serum gastrin concentrations. In rats there was a gradual rise in the serum gastrin level up to 48 hr after bilateral nephrectomy and also after ureteral ligation. After the latter operation the concentrations of gastrin in serum were lower than after nephrectomy. Significant elevation of the gastrin level 48 hr after ureteral ligation indicates that gastrin is

Biochemical Testing in Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Neuroendocrine cells are widely distributed throughout the body. They can produce, store, and secrete peptides and biogenic amines. Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare, but most are found in the intestine, pancreas, and lung. NETs may cause specific hormonal symptoms (eg, carcinoid syndrome) or appear nonfunctional. Blood or urine concentrations of tumor-secreted amines and peptides have been used as biomarkers in the diagnosis and management of NETs. This article focuses on currently available biochemical testing of blood or urine for gastroenteropancreatic and lung NETs and discusses the l

[Modified method of obtaining washings of the large intestine for determining coproantibodies and immunoglobulins in the dynamics of acute dysentery].

The study of the washings obtained during rectoscopy from the mucous membrane of the large intestine with the use of a special attachment for a rectoscope revealed that this method had a number of advantages when compared with the study of coprofiltrates; in particular, this method allowed to obtain pure secretions of the mucous membrane free of fecal admixtures and to concentrate the gamma globulin fraction. The study of the dynamics of coproantibody secretion in acute dysentery revealed that coproantibodies were most frequently detected on the second week of the disease (reaching 85.7%), whi

The Role of Probiotics Limosilactobacillus reuteri, Ligilactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus johnsonii in Inhibziting Pathogens, Maintaining Gut Health, and Improving Disease Outcomes.

As the critical component of the gastrointestinal tract, which lives in trillions of gut microorganisms, in a healthy state, the host interacts with the gut microbiota and is symbiotic. The species Limosilactobacillus reuteri, Ligilactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus johnsonii are indigenous gut commensal bacteria that are mainly found in the digestive tracts. These three bacteria possess a variety of characteristics that reflect their ability to adapt to the gastrointestinal environment. Herein, we summarize the current progress of research on the probiotic properties of these strains

Two sides of the same coin: protective versus pathogenic mesentery in inflammatory bowel diseases - a comprehensive review.

The mesentery, a membranous structure containing blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics and attaching the intestines to the posterior abdominal wall, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this review, we describe the signature features of the mesentery in IBD, including mesenteric hypervascularity (the comb sign) and edema, creeping fat generation, mesenteric fibrofatty proliferation, mesenteric lymphadenopathy, stenosis/sacculation, and hyperplasia of neurological components. These traits trigger a surge in the production of chemokines and proinflamma

The Role of the Gallbladder, the Intestinal Barrier and the Gut Microbiota in the Development of Food Allergies and Other Disorders.

The microbiota present in the gastrointestinal tract is involved in the development or prevention of food allergies and autoimmune disorders; these bacteria can enter the gallbladder and, depending on the species involved, can either be benign or cause significant diseases. Occlusion of the gallbladder, usually due to the presence of calculi blocking the bile duct, facilitates microbial infection and inflammation, which can be serious enough to require life-saving surgery. In addition, the biliary salts are secreted into the intestine and can affect the gut microbiota. The interaction between

Mucin histochemistry of the columnar epithelium of the oesophagus (Barrett's oesophagus): a prospective biopsy study.

Columnar epithelium-lined oesophagus (CELO) is an acquired disorder associated with a high incidence of cancer. CELO consists of three histological types of epithelium: gastric-fundic, junctional, and specialised columnar, the last resembling intestinal metaplasia of the stomach. In a previous study of CELO an incompletely differentiated variant of intestinal metaplasia secreting sulphomucins (type II B) was found. This was shown to be associated with well differentiated adenocarcinoma, as in the stomach. The purpose of this paper has been to define by histochemistry the mucin profile of CELO

Evidence for an electrically silent, neurogenic fluid secretion in the rat jejunum in vivo.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanism behind neurogenic fluid secretion in the rat jejunum. In vitro, short-circuit current (SCC) and potential difference (PD) were measured with the conventional Ussing technique. In vivo, electric parameters and net fluid transport (NFT) were simultaneously recorded with two different techniques. In separate in vivo experiments alkaline secretion (As) was estimated. In vitro, the chloride channel blocking substance 5-nitro-2(-3-phenylpropyl-amino)benzoic acid (NPPB) and the loop diuretic substance furosemide (F) inhibited SCC, whereas the carbon

Inhibition of apolipoprotein B secretion by IL-6 is mediated by EGF or an EGF-like molecule in CaCo-2 cells.

Small intestinal mucosal inflammation observed in celiac disease is associated with the local release of growth factors and various cytokines. In a previous study, we investigated the effect of various cytokines on triacylglycerol and apoB secretion by CaCo-2 cells and observed that TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, and particularly IL-6, decreased apolipoprotein (apo) B and triacylglycerol secretion. In this study, we explored possible mechanisms to explain the inhibitory effect of IL-6 on apoB secretion. IL-6, 10 ng/mL, added to the basolateral medium of CaCo-2 cells grown on semi-permeable filters, dec

Influence of neural blockages and proglumide on rat pancreatic enzyme secretion in response to intraluminal fatty acid.

Effects of neural blockages on pancreatic enzyme secretion in response to infusing fatty acid into the lumen were investigated using anesthetized rats, equipped with bile-pancreatic and duodenal cannulae, to evaluate the relative contribution of the neural and the hormonal mediations in the pancreatic response. Oleate (0.2 ml) was injected as a bolus into the rat duodenum, and the trypsin output in bile-pancreatic juice was monitored to determine the pancreatic enzyme secretion response with continuous return of bile-pancreatic juice to the intestine. Microbial harmony in female reproductive health: exploring the impact of intestinal flora on ovarian function and disease pathogenesis.

The intestinal microbiota is vast in type and quantity and it plays a critical role in regulating various physiological functions in the host, including intestinal function, immune response and energy metabolism. Existing research shows that intestinal flora is associated with various hormones, cell cycles and ovarian function-related diseases in the female ovaries. Certain microorganisms within the intestinal flora can modulate the levels of hormones secreted by the ovary, such as estrogen and androgens. Furthermore, an imbalance in the gut microbiota can result in altered hormone levels in t
