Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive fungal infection caused by ubiquitous saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales. In humans, the infection is generally caused by inhalation of spores or traumatic inoculation in cutaneous wounds, typically affecting immunocompromised patients. In animals, Mucorales infection is common in cattle, but is rare in the other species, including felids. No cases of mucormycosis have been reported to date in non-domestic felids, to our knowledge. We describe a case of mucormycosis in a 5-y-old female captive tiger (Panthera tigris). The affected tiger was part of a grou

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown cause, most commonly affecting the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman in whom intestinal sarcoidosis was incidentally discovered alongside pulmonary involvement. The diagnosis was made during evaluation of trauma-related findings and confirmed through PET-CT, colonoscopy, and biopsy. GI sarcoidosis can closely mimic other granulomatous diseases, such as Crohn's disease or certain infections, making diagnosis particularly challenging. In this case, the presence of mediastinal lymphadenopathy

The recent development of single-cell transcriptomics highlighted the existence of a new lineage of mature absorptive cells in the human intestinal epithelium. This subpopulation is characterized by the specific expression of Bestrophin 4 (BEST4) and of other marker genes including OTOP2, CA7, GUCA2A, GUCA2B, and SPIB. BEST4+ cells appear early in development and are present in all regions of the small and large intestine at a low abundance (<5% of all epithelial cells). Location-specific gene expression profiles in BEST4+ cells suggest their functional specialization in each gut region, as ex

The intestines have been considered the "forbidden organ" for years, and intestinal failure became the last organ failure recognized as such in the medical field. The impossibility of providing adequate nutritional support, turned these patients into recipients of just palliative comfort. In the 1960's, parenteral nutrition appeared as the most reasonable replacement therapy, but the initial success obtained with clinical kidney, heart, liver, lung and pancreas transplantation served as background to explore intestinal transplantation. The first clinical report of an isolated intestinal transp…

Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], in particular Crohn's disease [CD]. Unfortunately, at present intestinal fibrosis is not yet preventable, and cannot be treated by interventions other than surgical removal. Intestinal fibrosis is characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix [ECM], which is caused by activated fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Accumulation of ECM results from an imbalanced production and degradation of ECM. ECM degradation is mainly performed by matrix metalloproteinases [MMPs], enzymes that ar

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor of immature myeloid cells that is often associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We herein report an 81-year-old man who presented with intestinal obstruction due to myeloid sarcoma of the small intestine. Diagnostic challenges were overcome using double-balloon enteroscopy and a biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. The patient subsequently developed AML but responded well to chemotherapy. This case underscores the importance of considering myeloid sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of small-bowel tumors. Highlighting

Intussusception is a phenomenon commonly associated with the paediatric population. In adults, intussusception is frequently a result of a neoplastic process. We present the case of a 56-year-old gentleman who was diagnosed to the local Emergency Department with a 4-day history of worsening severe, left sided lower abdominal pain. The pain was colicky in nature. Computed tomography identified a long-segment intussusception involving distal small bowel, caecum, ascending colon, the entirety of transverse colon and its associated mesentery. The patient proceeded to theatre where a laparotomy and

The intestine represents one of the first barriers where microorganisms and environmental antigens come into tight contact with the host immune system. A healthy intestine is essential for the well-being of humans and animals. The period after birth is a very important phase of development, as the infant moves from a protected environment in the uterus to one with many of unknown antigens and pathogens. In that period, mother's milk plays an important role, as it contains an abundance of biologically active components. Among these components, the iron-binding glycoprotein, lactoferrin (LF), ha

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Biliary diseases are a group of disease affecting biliary tract, including immune-mediated primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). With limited treatment options, PBC and PSC may lead to liver cirrhosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging evidence has shown the participation of gut microbiota in the etiology of PBC and PSC. Patients with PBC and PSC exhibit alterations in gut microbiota composition. Dysfunctional gut barrier facilitates the translocation of possible pathogenic bacteria and derived metabolites. Along with molecular mimicry between

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an intrinsic network of neuronal ganglia in the intestinal tube with about 100 million neurons located in the myenteric plexus and submucosal plexus. These neurons being affected in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, before pathological changes in the central nervous system (CNS) become detectable is currently a subject of discussion. Understanding how to protect these neurons is, therefore, particularly important. Since it has already been shown that the neurosteroid progesterone mediates neuroprotective effects in the CNS and PNS, it

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease usually affecting the urinary bladder and other locations. In humans, the gastrointestinal tract is the second most common location but there are no reports of intestinal malakoplakia in animals. A 10-month-old female French Bulldog was presented with chronic haemorrhagic diarrhoea and anorexia with normochromic-normocytic anaemia and hypoalbuminaemia. Grossly, there was mucosal thickening and ulceration of the caecum, colon and rectum. Microscopically, transmural sheets of foamy macrophages were seen in these tissues. Macrophages were perio

An 83-year-old female, suffering from abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, was admitted to our hospital. Gas-liquid level and tumor was not seen on the abdominal computed tomography scan. Instead, two high density balloon which were 2.7cm(distal) and 3.3cm(proximal) in diameter separately were shown (Figure A) in small intestine. The balloons proved to be part of ileus tube and iohexol which was incorrectly injected into the balloons caused a blockage in the tube. During colonoscopy, we were surprised to find that the distal balloon had passed through the ileocecal valve and we punctured it e

Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. One of the most serious complications is intestinal perforation due to inflammation of the terminal ileum. In this study, we aimed to examine three cases with intestinal perforation that developed during a typhoid epidemic in terms of clinical, laboratory findings and treatment follow-up. The patients were in the 20-22 age groups and are male patients. Fever, malaise, and loss of appetite were the complaints encountered in all cases. During admission, the clinical and laboratory findings were hepatomegaly in two cases, abdominal

Amyloidosis is a disease caused by extracellular deposition of abnormally folded proteins. While gastrointestinal involvement is relatively frequent in its systemic form, isolated gastrointestinal disease is rare. We present the case of a 62-year-old man assessed for iron deficiency anemia and abdominal pain after starting antiplatelet therapy with acetylsalicylic acid and ticagrelor for ischemic heart disease. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed as part of the study, showing thickened folds with pseudopolypoid morphology and nodular mucosa with a preserved crypt pattern in the duodena
