The response to iron limitation of the Gram-positive soil bacterium Corynebacterium glutamicum was analyzed with respect to secreted metabolites, the transcriptome, and the proteome. During growth in glucose minimal medium, iron limitation caused a shift from lactate to pyruvate as the major secreted organic acid complemented by l-alanine and 2-oxoglutarate. Transcriptome and proteome analyses revealed that a pronounced iron starvation response governed by the transcriptional regulators DtxR and RipA was detectable in the late, but not in the early, exponential-growth phase. Anaemia is defined by WHO as Hb < 13.0 g/dL in male adults and <12.0 g/dL in female adults. It is a common comorbidity in patients of heart failure with both HFrEF and HFpEF. The incidence ranges between 30% and 50%, though in certain communities, it is likely to be higher still. Elderly age, severe heart failure, poor nutrition, and elevation of inflammatory markers are associated with a higher incidence of anaemia. However, the commonest contributing factor to anaemia in HF is iron deficiency. In a Canadian study of 12 065 patients, the incidence of absolute ID was 21% in anaemic patients. M

Iron needs increase exponentially during pregnancy to meet the increased demands of the fetoplacental unit, to expand maternal erythrocyte mass, and to compensate for iron loss at delivery. In more than 80% of countries in the world, the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy is > 20% and could be considered a major public health problem. The global prevalence of anemia in pregnancy is estimated to be approximately 41.8%. Undiagnosed and untreated iron deficiency anemia (IDA) can have a great impact on maternal and fetal health. Indeed, chronic iron deficiency can affect the general wellbeing of th

Iron is a key element for normal cellular function and plays a role in many cellular processes including mitochondrial respiration. The role of iron deficiency (ID) in heart failure (HF) has been a subject of debate amid increasing advocacy for intravenous (IV) supplementation. Both the definition and the approach to treatment of ID in HF have been adapted from the experience in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this review, we highlight the differences in regulatory mechanisms as well as pathophysiology of ID in CKD and HF population both at the systemic and cellular levels. We w

Plant responses to coincident nutrient deficiencies cannot be predicted from the responses to individual deficiencies. Although copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) are essential micronutrients for plant growth that are often and concurrently limited in soils, the combinatorial response to Cu-Fe deficiency remains elusive. In the present study, we characterised the responses of Arabidopsis thaliana plants deprived of Cu, Fe or both (-Cu-Fe) at the level of plant development, mineral composition, and reconfiguration of transcriptomes, proteomes and metabolomes. Compared to single deficiencies, simultaneou

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of iron deficiency and its association with outcomes in children with heart failure.
STUDY DESIGN: A single-center retrospective cohort study of patients with heart failure aged 1-21 years from July 2012 to June 2017 with available serum iron studies was performed. Subjects were analyzed in 2 groups: biventricular systolic heart failure (BiV) and single-ventricle congenital heart disease with systolic heart failure (SV). Iron deficiency was defined as ≥2 of the following: serum iron <50 μg/dL, serum ferritin <20 ng/mL, transferrin >300 ng/mL, or transferr

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin is produced in hepatocytes as a precursor form that needs to be converted to a mature hepcidin to be active. In iron deficiency anemia (IDA), the synthesis of hepcidin is inhibited; however, it is not clear how the maturation of hepcidin precursor is affected. To assess the relative maturity of serum hepcidin in the setting of IDA, we compared the ratio of mature hepcidin to prohepcidin in children with different iron statuses.
METHODS: A total of 51 children (age: 0.6~18.2 yr) with normal renal function and C-reactive protein levels were enrolled. Based on hemoglobin lev

Iron deficiency anemia has been associated with a secondary and potentially reversible cardiomyopathy. The pathophysiologic paradigm has been that the hematologic disease begets cardiac dysfunction. There may be, however, a point at which myocardial injury is irreversible in susceptible individuals. We present the case of a 4-year-old, developmentally normal, child who presented with iron deficiency anemia and a dilated cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure. Despite appropriate correction of the anemia, the patient developed decompensated heart failure requiring milrinone therapy and ev

Despite a high frequency of iron deficiency in pregnancy, the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) stated: "there is inconclusive evidence routine supplementation for iron deficiency anemia improves maternal or infant clinical health outcomes." In contradistinction, high-quality epidemiologic studies report long lasting deficits in infants diagnosed with iron deficiency in the first 6 months of life compared with infants who were not, with specific deficits in cognition, memory, executive function and electrophysiology documented up to 19 years of age. Infants are not routin

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is a common complication of pregnancy and may lead to anemia as pregnancy progresses. Routine screening tests in pregnancy include hemoglobin levels, but in most centers not a serum ferritin. Advances in red cell and reticulocyte indices on automated blood counters have the potential to detect iron deficiency earlier, but pregnancy is associated with a rapid expansion of the red cell mass and parameters based on the entire erythrocyte population are less sensitive to changes. The objective of this study was to assess whether the Red Cell Size Factor and associated r

An adolescent male presented with recurrent episodes over several years of severe iron deficiency anemia and associated severe thrombocytopenia. The anemia was secondary to chronic blood loss due to ulceration at the site of an ileocolonic anastomosis performed during infancy. We were able to demonstrate complete resolution of thrombocytopenia with the administration of iron, and without using steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, or platelet transfusions. This is the first reported case of an individual with multiple episodes over several years of thrombocytopenia secondary to recurrent sever

Iron dyshomeostasis and mitochondrial impairments are both vitally important for the progression of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, how these two pathological phenomena are linked with one another remains unclear, especially in neurons. To address the question, a model of iron overload was established with exposure of rat primary cortical neurons to excessive iron. We first verified that iron overload resulted in a decrease in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in neurons. Meanwhile, the release of mitochondrial cytochr

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinico-radiological phenotype of 3 patients harboring a homozygous novel AP4M1 pathogenic mutation.
METHODS: The 3 patients from an inbred family who exhibited early-onset developmental delay, tetraparesis, juvenile motor function deterioration, and intellectual deficiency were investigated by magnetic brain imaging using T1-weighted, T2-weighted, T2*-weighted, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) sequences. Whole-exome sequencing was performed on the 3 patients.
RESULTS: In the 3 patients, brain imaging identified the same pa

IMPORTANCE: Hearing loss in the US adult population is linked to hospitalization, poorer self-reported health, hypertension, diabetes, and tobacco use. Because iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common and easily correctable condition, further understanding of the association between IDA and all types of hearing loss in a population of US adults may help to open new possibilities for early identification and appropriate treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and conductive hearing loss and IDA in adults aged 21 to 90 years in the United Stat

AIM: To investigate the cost effectiveness of routine small bowel biopsies (SBBs) in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) independent of their celiac disease (CD) serology test results.
METHODS: We used a state transition Markov model. Two strategies were compared: routine SBBs during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in all patients with IDA regardless their celiac serology status (strategy A) vs SBBs only in IDA patients with positive serology (strategy B). The main outcomes were quality adjusted life years (QALY), average cost and the incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER). One w
