A case of abdominal syndrome caused by the presence of a large number of Anisakis larvae.

A 58-year-old woman living in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, complained of severe epigastric pain and nausea about 8 h after having eaten 'Sashimi'. A gastrocamera examination undertaken as a result of her clinical history of gastric anisakiasis indicated that a large number of worms had penetrated the posterior walls. Fifty-six larval nematodes were directly removed from the greater curvature of the stomach with a gastroendoscopic biopsy clipper, and were identified as the larvae of Anisakis simplex.

Genetic and developmental factors in the olfactory response of Drosophila melanogaster larvae to alcohols.

Olfactory responses of Drosophila melanogaster larvae to a homologous series of primary alcohols (methanol ... decanol) were tested. Alcohols at either extreme of the chain lengths studied (methanol, ethanol and decanol) evoked no significant responses. Heptanol and nonanol both produced dose-independent responses, larvae being attracted to heptanol and repulsed by nonanol. The remaining alcohols elicited dose-related attractive responses. Responses to hexanol and nonanol decline with increasing larval age. Genetic differences were found for the response to heptanol, with larvae from a Japanes…

Intestinal mucus entrapment of Trichinella spiralis larvae induced by specific antibodies.

Entrapment of muscle larvae (ML) occurred in vitro when antibodies specific for Trichinella spiralis were added directly to intestinal mucus from normal non-immunized rats or when mucus was collected from pups suckling a T. spiralis-infected dam. Normal rat serum immunoglobulins failed to promote mucus entrapment and complement did not appear to play a part in the entrapment process. Differences were not observed in the efficiency of entrapment of ML by mucus harvested from different regions of the small intestine. Employing a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) specific for excretory-secreto…

A survey of epidemiology of Gnathostoma hispidum and experimental studies of its larvae in animals.

The present study is concerned with a survey of the epidemiology and infectivity of Gnathostoma hispidum larvae in animals. A total or 3,478 pigs were examined in Hongze-Lake, Jiangsu; Po-Lake, Anhui; and Jiujiang, in Jiangxi Province. The infection rate of G. hispidum in pigs was 14.9%. The prevalence in pigs in the lake districts (26.4%) was considerably higher than in the mountainous districts (5.1%). The results of field surveys and experimental studies revealed that in China, 38 animal species served as the first and the second intermediate hosts and paratenic hosts of G. hispidum. Among …

Heterogeneity in the expression of surface-exposed epitopes among larvae of Ascaris lumbricoides.

Quantitative immunofluorescence was used to examine differences in the binding of antibody to the surfaces of individual living infective stage larvae of Ascaris lumbricoides. Using rabbit antisera, it was first established that larvae cultured for 48 h after artificial hatching were relatively uniform in their levels of antibody binding and in minimal exposure of epitopes expressed by later larval stages. Aliquots from a pool of larvae were probed with serum from individual infected people living in an endemic area of Nigeria. The larvae used were derived from parasites collected in the same …

Strongyloides stercoralis: identification of a protease that facilitates penetration of skin by the infective larvae.

Host invasion and tissue migration of several helminths have been linked to the expression and release of parasite-derived proteases. One of the most remarkable examples of tissue migration is that of larvae of the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis, which can move through tissue at speeds of up to 10 cm per hour. We have shown the Strongyloides L3 larvae secrete a potent histolytic metalloprotease to facilitate their rapid migration. This protease has elastase activity and catalyzes the degradation of a model of dermal extracellular matrix. The importance of this enzyme in the pathog…

Effect of praziquantel treatment on lung-stage larvae of Schistosoma mansoni in vivo.

Mice infected heavily with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae were treated 6 days later with Praziquantel and the parasites studied 1 h post-treatment. Immunofluorescence experiments showed that parasite surface antigens became available for labelling in larvae harvested from Praziquantel-treated mice, but not from untreated mice. Red blood cell antigens acquired from the host were localized on all lung worms studied. The distribution of each set of antigens, as revealed by fluorescence-labelling was, however, quite different. The lungs of heavily infected, drug-treated mice, exhibited severe haemo…

Hypersensitivity to larvae of chironomids (non-biting midges). Cross-sensitization with crustaceans.

In 2,368 consecutive adult patients with asthma and/or rhinitis the incidence of positive skin prick test (SPT) with a chironomid extract (CHIR) (produced from "red feather mosquito larvae" used as fish food) was 14% (26% in atopics and 4% in non-atopics). RAST with chironomid was positive in 4% of 110 consecutive sera (8% in atopic sera). Significant correlations were found between RAST and SPT results with chironomid and between SPT results with CHIR and with various crustaceans. Correlations were also found reciprocally among SPT results with different crustaceans and between some crustacea…

Observations on Sudanese camel nasal myiasis caused by the larvae of Cephalopina titillator.

Forty-four camels slaughtered at Nyala abattoir, western Sudan, were examined for infection with the larvae of Cephalopina titillator. The infection rate was found to be 100 p. 100. The parasitic burden ranged between 8-243 per animal. They were recovered throughout the year. The first stage larvae were noticed from December to May, indicating the breeding season of the fly. The larvae were found to cause visible pathological lesions on the nasopharynx. These were also demonstrated histopathologically. Bacteriological examinations revealed the presence of Pasteurella haemolytica and Klebsiella…

Experimental infection in a monkey with Gnathostoma hispidum larvae obtained from loaches.

Since the 1908s gnathostomiasis has occurred sporadically in Japanese who have eaten loaches, fresh-water fish imported from southeast Asia. Symptoms include creeping skin eruptions and eosinophilia. The symptoms disappeared in most patients within three months after the onset and the patients then remained symptom-free. To elucidate the causative factors, we fed one monkey with 80 gnathostome larvae collected from loaches and autopsied the animal 466 days later. Fifty-one viable larvae (64%) were recovered from muscle; these were in the advanced third stage and were encapsulated.

The role of muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis in the behavioral alterations of the mouse host.

The effects of early and encysted muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis on the open-field behavior of CD-1 mice were studied. Chemotherapy with fenbendazole prior to encystment of larvae prevented the development of behavioral changes in mice. The chemotherapeutic destruction of encysted muscle larvae restored the ambulatory activity of mice to normal levels. The study suggests that muscle larvae are the etiological agents of behavioral alterations in the mouse host.

The efficacy of ivermectin against larvae of the screw-worm fly (Chrysomya bezziana).

An in vitro technique for screening systemic insecticides against larvae of the screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana is described. Susceptibilities of screw-worm larvae of different ages to ivermectin (MK-933) were determined. Based on 24 h larval mortality, the LD50 of 1-,2-,3-,4- and 5-day larvae was 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.2 and 0.4 ppm of ivermectin. LD50 based on adult emergence following treatment of 4- and 5-day larvae was 0.02 and 0.05 ppm. The LD99.9 for 4-day larvae based on 24 h larval mortality and adult emergence was 11.0 and 0.15 ppm respectively and for 5-day larvae, was 44.3 and 0.4 …

Pulmonary superoxide dismutase activity in the mouse infected with Ancylostoma caninum larvae.

Albino mice were infected per os with 1000 infective larvae of Ancylostoma caninum and pulmonary superoxide dismutase activity was studied after completion of lung migration. The total superoxide dismutase activity per mg of lung protein was elevated by 15% in infected mice. Of the two forms of superoxide dismutases studied, that containing Cu-Zn was elevated by 44%. This suggests that A. caninum in mice may result in histopathological changes leading to transient pulmonary oxygen toxicity.

Trapping of large numbers of larvae in the livers of Toxocara canis-reinfected mice.

Congenitally athymic nude mice (BALB/c-nu/nu) and BALB/c-nu/+ were infected with 500 embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. Six weeks later they were reinfected with the same number of eggs. The liver and other organs were examined for numbers of 2nd-stage larvae at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after reinfection. Far more larvae were trapped in the liver after reinfection than after the primary infection but fewer were found in the livers of BALB/c-nu/nu than in BALB/c-nu/+ mice.

[Chronic intestinal ischemia after migration of larvae in ascaridiasis (author's transl)].

A case report is given of a 25 year old turkish patient, who had ascaridiasis and multiple stenoses of the small intestine. This syndrome was caused by extensive obliterating phlebitis of the small mesenterial veins and sclerosing lymphadenitis of the mesenterial lymph nodes. Granuloma containing epitheloid cells and giant cells could be found in the venous walls and in the lymph nodes, some of the granuloma being grouped around atrophic ascarides larvae; this demonstrates, that the intestinal stenoses represent an unusual complication of larvae migration in this worm disease. Perforation of t…

Experimental infection of chickens with Ancylostoma caninum: migration and distribution of larvae in tissues.

Two hundred one-day-old male white leghorn chickens (Gallus domesticus) divided into 4 groups were inoculated with a single dose of 500, 1000, 2000 or 4000 filariform larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Larval recoveries were made from different tissues at intervals from 4 hours to 72 hours after infection. Larval migration in the heart took place within 4 hours in all the groups except group A with 500 larvae and in thoracic muscle at 8 hours. Larvae also migrated into liver, lungs and neck muscle within 12 hours and into leg muscle at 18 hours. No larvae were recovered from the muscles after 72 h…
