Metabolic engineering of Ruminiclostridium papyrosolvens for 2,3-butanediol production from lignocellulose.

Ruminiclostridium papyrosolvens is an anaerobic, mesophilic, and cellulolytic bacterium capable of secreting cellulosomes for efficient lignocellulose degradation, making it a promising candidate for consolidated bioprocessing (CBP). However, its native cellulolytic activity is repressed by cellobiose, and its natural fermentation products are limited to low-value compounds. In this study, we firstly discovered that the cellulosomal cip-cel gene cluster is subject to cellobiose-mediated carbon catabolite repression (CCR). By replacing its native promoter with the endogenous cellobiose/cellodex

Recent progress in engineering yeast producers of cellulosic ethanol.

The production of second-generation (2 G) bioethanol, a key sector in industrial biotechnology, addresses the demand for sustainable energy by utilizing lignocellulosic biomass. Efficient fermentation of all sugars from lignocellulose hydrolysis is essential to enhance ethanol titers, improve biomass-to-biofuel yields, and lower costs. This review compares the potential of recombinant yeast strains for 2 G bioethanol production, focusing on their ability to metabolize diverse sugars, particularly xylose. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, engineered for enhanced pentose and hexose utilization, is compa

Biomass and bioethanol production from pretreated mixed fruit peel hydrolysate using Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains at different pH and oxygen conditions.

BACKGROUND: Fruit peels as a lignocellulosic biomass are rich in sugars and nutrients, thus making them favorable medium for yeast growth and various materials production. This study showed the potential of fuit peels hydrolysate (FPH) as a substrate for single-cell protein (SCP) and bioethanol production, depending on substrate concentration, pH, oxygen availability. RESULTS: The highest specific growth rate (0.50 ± 0.01 h- 1) was observed at pH 6.5 in non-diluted hydrolysates, which corresponds to ~ 250.0 g L- 1 carbohydrates and 0.2 g L- 1 total nitrogen concentration. The maximal protein

Mussel-inspired robust and waterproof soybean protein adhesives enhanced with phenolated lignosulfonate for wood bonding.

Plant protein-based adhesives are favored for their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the low reactivity of plant protein and inherent water sensitivity of its adhesive significantly limits their scalability and broader application. Drawing inspiration from mussels, we developed a robust and waterproof bio-based adhesive reinforcing soybean protein (SP) with lignosulfonate. Specifically, the lignosulfonate was modified with phenol and epoxidated to synthesize phenolated lignin epoxy resin (PLEP), which was then added into SP matrix. The resulting adhesive demonstrated…

Superior dynamic adsorption-desorption of a valorized lignocellulosic waste composite enhanced with carbon nanofibers for gasoline emissions control: regenerative fixed bed and modeling.

Vehicle gasoline emissions are an important source of volatile organic compounds (VOC), contributing to the formation of smog and other air pollutants with adverse effects on human health and the environment. Automotive canisters present ineffective adsorption and desorption of gasoline emissions because of the diffusional limitations of microporous activated carbon (AC). Therefore, the development of feasible adsorbents with both effective gas adsorption and highly regenerative ability is necessary. This study shows that carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD)

A sustainable black liquor-based carbon scavenger to promote urea formaldehyde as green wood adhesive with low formaldehyde emission.

The current study focuses on finding an ecological method to dispose of black liquors (BLs), containing lignin macromolecules, which are produced as byproducts of rice straw-based paper production. In addition to maximizing their value as precursors in the preparation of novel formaldehyde scavengers to avoid the environmental risks associated with using urea formaldehyde in agro-wood composites. To optimize the route, various black liquors are prepared from pulping of rice straw by different pulping agents (alkali, neutral, acidic and kraft reagents) used as additions or precursors for carbon…

Degradation of contrasting pesticides by white rot fungi and its relationship with ligninolytic potential.

The capacity of nine species of white rot fungus from a variety of basidiomycete orders to degrade contrasting mono-aromatic pesticides was investigated. There was no relationship between degradation of the dye Poly R-478, a presumptive test for ligninolytic potential, and degradation of the highly available pesticides diuron, metalaxyl, atrazine or terbuthylazine in liquid culture. However, there were significant positive correlations between the rates of degradation of the different pesticides. Greatest degradation of all the pesticides was achieved by Coriolus versicolor, Hypholoma fascicul…
