Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Hospital Quality Management, Patient Safety, and Accreditation Readiness: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

As healthcare systems become increasingly data-driven, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are being explored as tools to support quality management, patient safety, and accreditation. This systematic review synthesizes the available evidence across these domains through a structured literature search of major biomedical databases, encompassing studies published over the past decade and narratively synthesized to capture implementation context alongside technical performance. Three electronic databases were searched, and 23 studies were included. The available empirical evid

Key Guidelines in Developing a Pre-Emptive COVID-19 Vaccination Uptake Promotion Strategy.

This paper makes the case for immediate planning for a COVID-19 vaccination uptake strategy in advance of vaccine availability for two reasons: first, the need to build a consensus about the order in which groups of the population will get access to the vaccine; second, to reduce any fear and concerns that exist in relation to vaccination and to create demand for vaccines. A key part of this strategy is to counter the anti-vaccination movement that is already promoting hesitancy and resistance. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a tsunami of misinformation and conspira

Time to harmonize national ambient air quality standards.

OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization has developed ambient air quality guidelines at levels considered to be safe or of acceptable risk for human health. These guidelines are meant to support governments in defining national standards. It is unclear how they are followed. METHODS: We compiled an inventory of ambient air quality standards for 194 countries worldwide for six air pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. We conducted literature and internet searches and asked country representatives about national ambient air quality standards.

Morphology-dependent creep and chemo-mechanical degradation in non-equilibrium CoNi-based superalloys.

The creep resistance of γ'-strengthened CoNi-based superalloys is governed by the interactions of mechanical fields and localized chemical compositions, while the coupled chemo-mechanical origin and kinetics evolution under the creep stress at high temperature are still unclear. A phase-field crystal-plasticity model is proposed to investigate the morphology-dependent creep of the L12-γ'-(Co, Ni)3Al phase in a newly designed CoNi-based superalloy. The non-equilibrium precipitate is incorporated to capture the microstructural asymmetry. Under 750 MPa stress, the Y-axis loading exhibits an exten

Delivering HIV services in partnership: factors affecting collaborative working in a South African HIV programme.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) in delivering health services in low and middle income countries (LMICs) depends on effective collaborative working at scales from the local to the international, and a single GHI is effectively constructed of multiple collaborations. Research is needed focusing on how collaboration functions in GHIs at the level of health service management. Here, collaboration between local implementing agencies and departments of health involves distinct power dynamics and tensions. Using qualitative data from an evaluation of a health partners

Assessment of Local Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Sector in a Low-income Country: A Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: In high-income countries and emerging economies, pharmaceutical manufacturing is a driver for socioeconomic development. In sub-Saharan Africa, local pharmaceutical production is still fledgling largely because of historical economic and technological asymmetry. In Ethiopia alike, this environment has changed little despite six decades long operations and several support initiatives; access to essential medicines remained a persistent challenge. Despite a few fragmented reports on trends and profiles of the sector, in-depth investigations into underlying challenges remain limited.

The early construction of the Chinese physics terminology system in the globalization of Western scientific knowledge.

This study focuses on the historical construction of the system of Chinese physics terminology against the backdrop of the globalization of Western scientific knowledge, and analyzes its role in shaping cultural identity and fostering domestic academic independent practice capabilities within the scientific discourse. In the early stage, the terminology unification efforts led by missionaries laid the foundation for the establishment of China's physics terminology system. However, due to loose organization and lack of official promotion and support, most terms failed to achieve effective unifi

How does centralized isolation treatment strategy affect the medical staff's mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic?

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Chinese Government adopted a centralized isolation treatment (CIT) strategy for patients, which has greatly improved the efficiency of the pandemic response. However, compared to those in local hospitals, anti-COVID-19 medical staff in mobile cabin hospitals, where the CIT strategy was adopted, suffered more mental health problems. This study aimed to explore how the CIT strategy affected the medical staff's mental health by comparing anti-COVID-19 medical staff who worked in mobile cabin hospitals to those in fever clinics of lo

One-Parameter Scaling of Ground-State Stark Localization in a Five-Layer Semiconductor Superlattice.

Controlling the spatial localization of electronic states is a fundamental strategy for manipulating charge and energy at the nanoscale. In coupled nanostructures, however, the localization field depends strongly on coupling between confinement regions, complicating comparisons across geometries. Here, we show that ground-state electric-field-induced localization follows a common master curve governed by a single dimensionless parameter comparing electrostatic detuning and quantum coupling. Using a one-dimensional effective-mass model for the stacking direction of a disorder-free five-layer Ga

Leadership in Times of Crisis: The Potential for Increasing Social Capital in Displaced and Fragmented Communities.

Emergency displacement bears ecological, social, and psychological implications. This article examines the role of local leaders in increasing social capital in temporary housing shelters inhabited by displaced and fragmented communities, focusing on the conditions that undermined social capital and the challenges of sustaining it over time. A qualitative study was conducted in Israeli temporary housing shelters during wartime. The study included 21 individual interviews with local leaders across seven of these sites, as well as three focus groups with 25 professional community social workers.

Strong localization blurs the criticality of time series for spreading phenomena on networks.

We analyze the critical time series of the order parameter generated with active to inactive phase transitions of spreading dynamics running on the top of heterogeneous networks. Different activation mechanisms that govern the dynamics near the critical point were investigated. The time series were analyzed using the visibility graph (VG) method where a disassortative degree correlation of the VG is a signature of criticality. In contrast, assortative correlation is associated with off-critical dynamics. The signature of criticality given by the VG is confirmed for collective activation phenom

Adaptive Fourier decomposition-based time-frequency analysis of COVID-19 epidemic trends and policy interventions in Washington D.C., with comparative validation in London.

BACKGROUND: Epidemic trends respond dynamically to public health interventions, and retrospective evaluation of these responses is important for future preparedness. However, conventional epidemiological and time-series approaches often have limited ability to resolve the multi-scale and non-stationary fluctuations of epidemic data, which may obscure temporal structures associated with intervention timing. This study aimed to apply adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD) to characterize coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic dynamics and examine their temporal associations with public healt

First-Principles Insights into Surface and Ligand Effects in Stoichiometric HgTe Quantum Dots.

HgTe quantum dots are promising colloidal infrared semiconductors for photodetection, imaging, and optoelectronics because their electronic structure can be tuned from the short-wave to mid-infrared. Despite this technological promise, how the electronic structure of ultrasmall HgTe quantum dots emerges from confined semimetallic HgTe and how surface coordination governs frontier-state localization remain unresolved. Here, first-principles calculations on stoichiometric HgTe nanoclusters spanning ∼0.86-1.85 nm reveal a transition from confinement-dominated to surface-controlled electronic stru

Social Participation for Health and Health Care Workers' Self-Management: Lessons from Socialist Yugoslavia for Contemporary Health Systems-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Contemporary health systems continue to face persistent challenges in financing, equity, and governance, particularly under conditions of limited resources, workforce shortages, and demographic pressures. While the World Health Organization calls for strengthening social participation to achieve universal health coverage, evidence suggests that such participation often remains largely symbolic. Existing global examples of social participation in health are limited either by their short duration of implementation or by their limited scope. In contrast, the experience of f

Health impact of smoking and smoking cessation strategies: current evidence.

Smoking continues to be the main preventable cause of death in the UK. Tobacco consumption causes a wide range of diseases and other adverse effects, including multiple types of cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications, cataracts and osteoporosis. The Government's vision to 'make every contact count' emphasises community nurses' responsibility and key potential to promote healthier living and behaviour. This article reviews the latest evidence on supporting smokers in practice and argues that nurses working in the community are ideally plac

What matters to society when making decisions about reimbursing drugs for prostate cancer: a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: The use of surrogate outcomes to support treatment efficacy and cost-effectiveness in localized prostate cancer has the potential to shorten time to access for new medicines, but it may be associated with greater uncertainty. We sought to understand how members of society might trade off drug efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, and evidence strength when asked to consider funding new treatments for localized prostate cancer. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment among the Australian general population was conducted. Treatment choices were described by cost-effectiveness, gover
