Fetal pleural effusion is most commonly associated with lymphatic abnormalities such as congenital chylothorax or fetal heart failure, with obstruction of the systemic venous return representing a particularly rare and underrecognized cause. Herein, we report the case of a neonate with fetal pleural effusion caused by cor triatriatum dexter, in whom superior vena cava syndrome developed and progressed after birth. The infant was delivered at 33 weeks of gestation because of premature rupture of membranes, with a birth weight of 1.9 kg. The patient’s pleural effusion and upper-body edema worsen…

Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), remains a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) worldwide. Patients with renal edema, including those with nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD), and critical illness, are particularly susceptible because of barrier dysfunction, immune impairment, and altered antimicrobial pharmacokinetics. This narrative review examines the mechanisms linking renal edema to increased susceptibility to cutaneous S. aureus infection and discusses their diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Three inter

Malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) are almost always exudative, with only an estimated 3-4% meeting biochemical criteria for a transudate. Light's criteria remain the standard method for classifying pleural effusions, and transudative effusions typically do not undergo cytologic evaluation. This may delay the diagnosis of malignancy in rare cases where malignant cells are present in a biochemically transudative effusion. We present a 41-year-old homeless man with no established primary care who presented with progressive muscle cramping and was found to have severe electrolyte abnormalities, l

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensity (WMH) is associated with glymphatic dysfunction. Few studies have focused on the causal effects of the dysfunction of the glymphatic circulation pathways (inflow and outflow pathway) on WMH and cognitive function.
METHODS: This study investigated the directional effects between glymphatic circulation, WMH lesions, and cognitive function in older adults based on structural equation models. The lateral ventricle choroid plexus (ChP), the coupling strength between blood oxygen signals in gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid flow, the diffusion tensor imagin

Meigs syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the triad of benign ovarian tumors, ascites, and pleural effusion. However, concurrent presentation with both pleural and pericardial effusions is exceedingly rare. This paper presents a unique case of Meigs syndrome in a 75-year-old African American female patient with a history of anemia who was admitted for a left femur fracture secondary to a fall. In addition to her orthopedic injury, the patient exhibited intermittent abdominal fullness and discomfort, prompting a thorough diagnostic evaluation. Physical examination was unremarkable, a

A 59-year-old previously healthy woman presented with a six-month history of fever, nonproductive cough, and weight loss. The cause of these symptoms remained obscure despite a thorough, month-long hospitalization. On presentation, she was normotensive with a pulse of 98 beats/minute, respiratory rate of 20 breaths/minute, and a temperature of 39.4C. She was emaciated. Physical examination was notable for faint bibasilar crackles on lung auscultation. Initial laboratory testing revealed pancytopenia. Peripheral smear demonstrated normocytic, normochromic anemia without immature cells or schist

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: GATA2 deficiency is a germline disease that causes a wide spectrum of phenotypes including viral and bacterial infections, cytopenias, myelodysplasia, myeloid leukemias, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and lymphedema. The age of clinical presentation ranges from early childhood to late adulthood, with most occurring in adolescence to early adulthood. We review the expanding GATA2-deficient phenotype, molecular genetics of disease and developments in treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: GATA2 mutations have been found in up to 10% of those with congenital neutropenia and/or aplastic a

BACKGROUND: during gestation, the urachus represents the connection between the dome of the bladder and the allantoic duct. This infection occurs preferentially in young adults, advocating the haematogenous or lymphatic pathway as possible routes of transmission, while a cord or bladder origin may also occur. Urachal cysts are rare in adult life, and is observed in only about 2% of adults.
CLINIC CASE: A 30-year-old male patient with a history of alcoholic hepatitis, diabetes mellitus type 2, chronic malnutrition, increased volume beginning with generalized abdominal pain, abdominal tumor of

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) metastasizes early into the regional lymph nodes, but distant metastases occur late. Modified radical neck dissection might improve the treatment results for occultly metastasizing MTC.
METHODS: The authors report 23 patients after a minimal follow-up of 2 years (median, 36 months). There were 11 female and 12 male patients. The mean age was 43 years (+/- 13 years). The surgical technique included the meticulous dissection of all compartments of the neck, resulting in a unilateral or bilateral modified radical neck dissection with the complete rem

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a global neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline. Its core pathology involves neurofibrillary tangles mediated by hyperphosphorylated tau protein and senile plaques formed by extracellular deposits of β-amyloid. As the global incidence of AD continues to rise, human health faces a serious threat. However, the complexity of its pathogenesis poses significant challenges to current prevention and treatment strategies. Recent studies reveal that T cells, as key components of the adaptive immune system, exhibit abnormalities in both quan

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Chest CT imaging holds a major role in the diagnosis of lung diseases, many of which affect the peribronchovascular region. Identification and categorization of peribronchovascular abnormalities on CT imaging can assist in formulating a differential diagnosis and directing further diagnostic evaluation.
REVIEW FINDINGS: The peribronchovascular region of the lung encompasses the pulmonary arteries, airways, and lung interstitium. Understanding disease processes associated with structures of the peribronchovascular region and their appearances on CT imaging aids in prompt diag

Gastrointestinal clear cell sarcomas (GICCSs) are malignant mesenchymal tumour that occur in the wall of gastrointestinal tract, mostly in the ileum and rarely in the rectum. These tumours are highly invasive, and often have metastasized via the lymphatic system or bloodstream by the time of diagnosis. In this case, the patient was admitted for gastric fundus mass, who was subsequently found and confirmed by biopsy as clear cell sarcoma of rectum. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple metastatic lesions in lymph node, lung, liver and bone. Furthermore, e

Vascular anomalies impact the musculoskeletal system dependent on the tissue involved (skin, subcutis, muscle, cartilage, or bone), the extent of involvement, and the type of anomalous vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins, or lymphatics). These malformations can cause a multitude of musculoskeletal problems for the patient. Leg-length discrepancy, intra-articular involvement, muscular lesions, and primary or secondary scoliosis are amongst the issues that patients face. All of these problems can cause pain, deformity, and a range of functional limitations. Surgical and nonsurgical treatment p

AIM OF THE STUDY: Lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of tumours of lymphoid tissue in which there is an abnormal proliferation of cells of the lymphatic system. The literature notes a gradual increase in the incidence of this type of cancer in the whole population. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the above tendency occurs in the head and neck area.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the years 2005-2014, at the Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology Department of the Upper Silesian Medical Centre in Katowice, 77 cases of lymphoma were recorded, 58 of which were analysed in terms of loc

Different pathologies, such as lymphoedema, cancer or psoriasis, are associated with abnormal lymphatic vessel formation. Therefore, influencing lymphangiogenesis is an interesting target. Recent evidence suggests that dimethylfumarate (DMF), an antipsoriatic agent, might have antitumorigenic and antilymphangiogenic properties. To prove this assumption, we performed proliferation and functional assays with primary human dermal lymphendothelial cells (DLEC). We could demonstrated that DMF suppresses DLEC proliferation and formation of capillary-like structures. Underlying apoptotic mechanisms c

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is the result of impaired lymphatic drainage by the affected organ. This abnormality can be primary or secondary. Different operative approaches have been introduced to treat chronic lymphedema.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 816 patients who were diagnosed with chronic lower extremity lymphedema and did not respond to non-operative management for at least six months. Data was collected over 25 years, between March 1987 and March 2013. Doppler ultrasonography of the deep venous system was routinely undertaken in all patients to confirm patency.

Lipedema is a clinical entity frequently misdiagnosed or confound with primary lymphedema. Lipedema is a disorder of adipose tissue that occurs almost exclusively in obese women. It is characterized by bilateral enlargement from hip to ankle due to abnormal depositions of subcutaneous fat associated with often mild edema, usually sparing the feet. Disease onset is usually at or soon after puberty. Lipedema results in considerable frustration and distress resulting from the cosmetic appearance. Patients may complain of pain, tenderness, easy bruising of the affected areas with moderate to sever
