The location of pain in cluster headache: Data from the International Cluster Headache Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the most common locations of cluster headache pain from an international, non-clinic-based survey of participants with cluster headache, and to compare these locations to other cluster headache features as well as to somatotopic maps of peripheral, brainstem, thalamic, and cortical areas. BACKGROUND: Official criteria for cluster headache state pain in the orbital, supraorbital, and/or temporal areas, yet studies have noted pain extending beyond these locations, and the occipital nerve appears relevant, given the effectiveness of suboccipital corticosteroid injections a

Assessment of Infraorbital Hypesthesia Following Orbital Floor and Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fractures Using a Novel Sensory Grading System.

PURPOSE: Introduction of a novel sensory grading system to assess the incidence and long-term recovery of infraorbital hypesthesia following orbital floor and inferior orbital rim fractures. METHODS: Patients who presented for evaluation of orbital floor and/or zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures between January 2015 and April 2016 were analyzed. Two-point subjective infraorbital sensory grading in 5 discrete anatomic areas was performed. Fractures were repaired based on traditional criteria; hypesthesia was not an indication for surgery. The sensory grading system was repeated a mean

Anatomy and ontogeny of a novel hemodynamic organ in zebrafish.

The zebrafish maxillary barbel can protract and retract in response to stimuli, and appears connected to a prominent blood sinus on the lateral aspect of the maxillary bone. However, the mechanism of barbel movement is not described. Using whole-mount phalloidin staining of the sinus region, we observed long filamentous actin cables, suggesting highly organized vascular smooth muscle cells, surrounding an endothelial chamber. Although the chamber is variably filled by erythrocytes in vivo, cardiac injection of fluorescent dextrans shows that it consistently contains plasma. Full-thickness conf

[Bilateral axillary brachial plexus block guided by multiple nerve stimulation and ultrasound in a multiple trauma patient].

We present the case of a woman with multiple wounds and injuries after attempted suicide by jumping from a high place. She had multiple craniofacial injuries and fractures of both forearms requiring emergency osteosynthesis. The neurosurgeons requested that a level of consciousness be maintained for frequent assessment; therefore it was decided to provide a bilateral axillary brachial plexus block. The procedure was carried out with the aid of a nerve stimulator to locate a triple response in the left arm (radial, medial and musculocutaneous nerves) and with both ultrasound and double nerve st

Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy through the external rhinoplasty approach.

The external rhinoplasty approach is a refinement of the well-recognized sublabial transseptal technique for transsphenoidal hypophysectomy first introduced by Cushing in 1910. This article relates our experience with 111 cases of transsphenoidal hypophysectomy performed during a 10-year period (1982-1992) and includes a detailed description of our use of the external technique. Fifty-one patients were male, and 60 were female. Ages ranged from 12 years to 80 years, with an average of 46 years. One hundred one patients had pituitary adenomas, four had craniopharyngiomas, two had inverting papi

[The expanded transconjunctival approach with lateral canthotomy to the orbital margin, floor and infraorbital nerve].

The range of indications for and the surgical technique of the extended transconjunctival approach to the inferior and lateral orbital margin, the floor of the orbit, the upper part of the facial wall of the maxillary sinus and the medial part of the zygomatic bone are described. We present 64 patients with mid-face fractures: 9 with fractures of the orbital margin, 48 with isolated blow-out fractures, and 7 with zygomaticomaxillary fractures. All have been operated on in the last 5 years. The transconjunctival approach extended by a lateral canthotomy is better than infraorbital or subciliary

The zygomaticotemporal branch of the trigeminal nerve: an anatomical study.

This study was conducted to determine the site of emergence of the zygomaticotemporal branch of the trigeminal nerve from the temporalis muscle and to identify the number of its accessory branches and their locations. A pilot study, conducted on the same number of patients, concluded that the main zygomaticotemporal branch emerges from the deep temporal fascia at a point on average 17 mm lateral and 6 mm cephalad to the lateral palpebral commissure, commonly referred to as the lateral canthus. These measurements, however, were obtained after dissection of the temporal area, rendering the findi

Recurrent Bronchospasm During Intra-arterial Chemotherapy via IMAX Access for Retinoblastoma: A Case Report.

Intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) has become an increasingly popular approach for treating advanced retinoblastoma. It offers targeted drug delivery and reduced systemic toxicity when compared to systemic chemotherapy. Respiratory complications are rare, but this case presents a patient who experienced recurrent episodes of intraoperative bronchospasm possibly linked to an anatomical variation. A six-month-old female with Group D retinoblastoma in her right eye underwent five cycles of IAC within six months of diagnosis. Due to failed visualization of the right ophthalmic artery during angiogr

Assessment of the canalis sinuosus and its branches in Taiwanese individuals using cone beam computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of dental implant surgeries, particularly in the maxillary anterior region, is growing, and understanding variations in relevant anatomical structures such as the canalis sinuosus (CS) and its accessory canals (ACs) is critical to avoid complications, including nerve injury and tissue necrosis. This study determined the prevalence, diameter, location, and anatomical variations of the CS and AC in a Taiwanese population by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT data were collected from 240 participants (aged 20-80 years, with an equal sex distribut

Trend analysis of the dosimetric impact of anatomical changes during proton therapy for maxillary sinus carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Anatomical changes, such as shrinkage and aeration, can affect dose distribution in proton therapy (PT) for maxillary sinus carcinoma (MSC). These changes can affect the dose to the target and organs at risk (OARs); however, when these changes occur during PT is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the dosimetric impact of anatomical changes during PT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with MSC were enrolled in this study. Initial PT plans were generated based on initial computed tomography (CT) images. Several repeat CT images were obtained to confirm anatomical changes du

The incidence of complications using new landmarks and a modified technique of canine fossa puncture.

BACKGROUND: Canine fossa puncture (CFP) is a technique that improves access to the maxillary sinus and may be required to ensure complete disease removal from this sinus. Traditional approaches through the canine fossa often have resulted in injury to branches of the infraorbital nerve. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency, severity, and duration of complications using recently described. landmarks for determining the optimal site for anatomically directed CFP (aCFP) and a new endoscopic retractor and drill guide that enable endoscopically guided canine fossa trephination (eCFT

Sympathectomy causes increased root resorption after orthodontic tooth movement in rats: immunohistochemical study.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system modulates inflammatory responses and bone remodeling. We have studied the effects of sympathectomy and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on root resorption, immunocompetent cell recruitment, neuropeptide, neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1-R), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) expression. Experimental rats (n=8) had the right superior cervical ganglion surgically removed, whereas control rats (n=6) underwent sham surgery. Three days later, all rats had the right maxillary first molar moved mesially by an orthodontic appliance. The rats were perf

Endoscopically assisted repair of orbital floor fractures.

Traditionally, orbital floor fractures are repaired with standard transcutaneous or transconjunctival approaches. Complications such as external scarring, eyelid edema, ectropion, entropion, and granuloma formation have been associated with these open lid techniques. The endoscope has been used to assist in orbital floor exploration, to reduce entrapped orbital tissue, and to identify the posterior shelf for implant placement. However, an open lid incision is inevitable when implant placement is necessary. We present our experiences in repairing orbital floor fractures using transantral endosc

A congenital abnormality of calves, suggestive of a new type of arthropod-borne virus infection.

About 1000 calves with a congenital disease were born in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, between October 1990 and October 1991, the peaks of the epidemic being in March and July 1991. Of 85 abnormal calves examined pathologically and serologically, 70 appeared to have been suffering from a viral disease. Of these 70 animals, 17 had lesions bearing some resemblance to those of the diseases produced by Akabane, Chuzan, Aino, bluetongue and bovine viral diarrhoea-mucosal disease viruses-diseases known to occur in Kagoshima-but serum samples contained no antibodies to these viruses or to infectious b
