Previously, anatomists considered paranasal sinuses as a mysterious region of the human skull. Historically, paranasal sinuses were first identified by ancient Egyptians and later, by Greek physicians. After a long period of no remarkable improvement in the understanding of anatomy during the Middle Ages, anatomists of the Renaissance period-Leonardo da Vinci and Vesalius-made their own contribution. Nathaniel Highmore's name is also associated with the anatomy of paranasal sinuses as he was first to describe the maxillary sinus.

Surgical ciliated cysts (SCCs) are rare benign lesions that have been described after radical maxillary sinus surgery such as a Caldwell-Luc procedure for chronic sinusitis. They usually occur several years following surgery, and they typically present as an evolving swelling in the maxillary sulcus and cheek area. The pathogenetic mechanism is related to the entrapment of respiratory epithelium from the paranasal sinuses and/or the nose within the wound created by the surgical procedures. Radiologically, SCCs manifest as a well-demarcated, unilocular or multilocular radiolucency and histologi

An otherwise healthy 34-year-old man was referred to our ear, nose and throat (ENT) clinic for a bilateral maxillary radiologic opacity. This condition was accidentally discovered with a panoramic radiography performed during a follow-up visit after a bilateral endodontic treatment. The patient did not report any specific sinonasal symptom such as purulent nasal discharge, loss of smell and cough, apart from an unspecific sinus pressure. The CT scans showed a bilateral inflammatory process into the maxillary-ethmoidal sinuses and an iron-like density within the maxillary sinuses, while nasal e

A case of congenital bronchiectasis associated with hypoplasia [correction of hyperplasia] of maxillary sinuses and sinusitis in a 3-year-old boy is presented. The ultramicroscopic examination of nasal mucosa showed abnormalities in the ultrastructure of the mucociliary system (spare cilia, absence of basal corpuscles, cytoplasmatic projections) clearly suggesting the ciliary immotility syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The histopathology and microbiology associated with silent sinus syndrome (SSS) have not been well described.
OBJECTIVE: This study details the histopathological and microbiological characteristics in addition to radiographic findings of SSS in comparison to those of chronic maxillary sinusitis (CRS).
METHODS: 42 patients diagnosed with SSS at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona were identified. Paranasal computed tomography scans of the 42 SSS patients as well as 42 matched CRS patients were analyzed in order to assess differences in the prevalence of septal spurs/deviation. 20 of t…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the pneumatization of mastoid air cells and PNS using three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of computed tomography (CT) scans of the PNS.
METHODS: A retrospective review of PNS CT scans from 60 cases was performed. Patients with evidence of sinusitis or mastoiditis, or a history of head trauma, were excluded from the study. Volumes were measured using 3D reconstruction based on axial images of 1 mm thickness. Volumes of the mastoid air cells (right and left), frontal sinus, sphenoid sinus, and maxillary sinuses (ri

Comparative echography and x-ray findings in suspected paranasal sinus disease reveal a good liability of negative x-ray reports. Positiv findings i.e. the diagnosis of mucous membrane thickening in the maxillary sinus and clouding of the frontal sinus are often misleading. Echography is reliable in diagnosing retention of sinus secretions. The patency of the maxillary ostium for air was tested in patients with complete opacity of the sinus. There was a significant difference between air or fluid containing sinuses, using echography as a control. Complete radiographic opacity has no bearing on

Etopic tooth eruption is the occurrence of the tooth germ in a nonanatomical position. It can be associated with dentigerous cyst, which is the second most seen in the development of odontogenic cyst commonly presented in mandibular region and seen in single form. It is usually accompanied with mandibular third molar followed by canine. Bilateral and multiple dentigerous cysts in nonsyndromic patients are fairly rare phenomenon and barely documented in the literatüre. We report a rare case of bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with ectopic third molars in the maxillary sinuses. Computerize

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between nasal airway volume and the presence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of adult patients who visited the sleep clinic at University Hospital between June 2013 and April 2017 and underwent overnight polysomnography for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea were reviewed retrospectively. Using computed tomography, the volumes of the nasal airways and maxillary sinuses were measured, and associations with the presence and severity of OSA were analyzed while controlling for the

Maxillary sinus is frequently presented as a single space within each maxilla. It drains directly into the nose through the middle meatus. We are reporting the second rare case of a mucocele in a separate compartment of maxillary sinus in a 26-year-old patient without a history of facial trauma. The non-contrast computed tomography of paranasal sinuses showed an expansile right infraorbital cystic lesion developed in an upper lateral position of the maxillary sinus. An excision biopsy was performed, which showed histopathological findings of a maxillary sinus mucocele.

PURPOSE: Maxillary posterior teeth exhibit a high incidence of periodontal bone and tooth loss. After tooth loss, the edentulous alveolar process of the posterior maxilla is often affected by resorption, which results in loss of vertical bone volume. Moreover, progressive sinus pneumatization leads to a decrease in the alveolar process from the cranial side. The sinus elevation and augmentation surgical technique opened a new way of anchoring endosseous implants despite discernible bone reduction. However, the surgical interventions require in-depth knowledge of maxillary sinus anatomy such as

Sinusitis is a common condition, but only very rarely accompanied by isolated cranial nerve palsies. We describe a case of a 64-year-old male with a two-day history of left-sided ptosis associated with one week of nasal congestion and frontal sinus pain. Examination revealed ptosis with left pupil mydriasis. Uncontrasted computed tomography and angiography of the head demonstrated neither intracranial vascular abnormalities nor acute lesions; however, it did show mucosal thickening in the left frontal sinus, ethmoid air cells and left maxillary sinus, indicating potential obstruction of the le

Acute bacterial sinusitis usually occurs following an upper respiratory infection that results in obstruction of the osteomeatal complex, impaired mucociliary clearance and overproduction of secretions. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history of a biphasic illness ("double sickening"), purulent rhinorrhea, maxillary toothache, pain on leaning forward, pain with a unilateral prominence and a poor response to decongestant therapy. Radiographs and computed tomographic scans of the sinuses generally are not useful in making the initial diagnosis. Since sinusitis is self-limited in 40 to 50

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (eTSS) is a well-established approach for resection of skull-based pathologies such as tuberculum sellae meningiomas; however, central nervous system (CNS) fungal infection is a potential complication, particularly in a patient with concomitant sinusitis.
OBSERVATIONS: A 58-year-old woman with a tuberculum sellae meningioma causing progressive visual disturbance and concurrent asymptomatic chronic maxillary sinusitis underwent eTSS. Six months later, a de novo dura-based mass with peripheral edema, which was assumed to be an aggressive metachrono…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to propose appropriate management for odontogenic chronic rhinosinusitis.
METHOD: Thirty-one adult patients with odontogenic chronic rhinosinusitis undergoing maxillary extraction were retrospectively analysed. Patients with (n = 21) and without (n = 10) oroantral fistula on computed tomography were classified. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery was performed when sinusitis did not improve after extraction. The critical indicators for surgical requirement in the management of odontogenic chronic rhinosinusitis were analysed.
RESULTS: Sinusitis significantly impro

Schizophyllum commune is a globally distributed basidiomycete fungus that is known as a rare cause of sinusitis, for which no prompt treatment has been established. We describe the first report of S. commune sinusitis following unrelated cord blood transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Thirteen days after transplantation, a 23-year-old female developed maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis. The sinusitis was antimicrobial-resistant, and the sinus aspirate culture revealed white wooly mold, which was identified as S. commune by nucleotide sequencing. The patient was successfully treated w

The condition of the maxillary sinus is not routinely assessed before a Le Fort I osteotomy. Performing this procedure in an infected sinus might account for a considerable proportion of the complications, such as excessive bleeding and sinusitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the maxillary sinus and nasal ventilation after Le Fort I osteotomy. Twenty patients were evaluated before and 2 months after surgery using validated questionnaires for sinonasal complaints (RSOM-31 and VAS score), nasal endoscopy, peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF), and a computed tomography (CT) scan. There wer

OBJECTIVES: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common chronic disease of the upper airways and has considerable impact on quality of life. Topical delivery of drugs to the paranasal sinuses is challenging, therefore the rate of surgery is high. This study investigates the delivery efficiency of a pulsating aerosol in comparison to a nasal pump spray to the sinuses and the nose in healthy volunteers and in CRS patients before and after sinus surgery.
METHODS: (99m)Tc-DTPA pulsating aerosols were applied in eleven CRSsNP patients without nasal polyps before and after sinus surgery. In addition,
