Cerebrovascular Pathology and Cognitive Outcomes in Older Black Decedents.

BACKGROUND: Few neuropathologic studies focus on the associations of cerebrovascular pathologies with cognition in older Black adults. METHODS: We conducted a nested substudy of participants who were enrolled in 1 of 4 harmonized longitudinal cohort studies-the Minority Aging Research Study, African American Clinical Core, Rush Memory and Aging Project, and Religious Order Study before coming to autopsy. Neuropathologic evaluation included assessment of cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative pathologies. We first documented single and mixed cerebrovascular profiles and neurodegenerative pathol

Context-Dependent Coding of Temporal Distance Between Cinematic Events in the Human Precuneus.

How temporal and contextual information interactively impact on behavior and brain activity during the retrieval of temporal order about naturalistic episodes remains incompletely understood. Here, we used fMRI to examine the effects of contextual signals derived from the content of the movie on the neural correlates underlying memory retrieval of temporal-order in human subjects of both sexes. By contrasting SAME versus DIFF storyline conditions during the retrieval of the temporal order of cinematic events, we found that the activation in the precuneus, as well as behavior, are significantly

The evolution of accelerated long-term forgetting: Evidence from the TIME study.

OBJECTIVE: Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) occurs when newly learned information decays faster than normal over extended delays. It has been recognised most frequently in temporal lobe epilepsy, including Transient Epileptic Amnesia (TEA), but can also be drug-induced. Little is known about the evolution of ALF over time and its impacts upon other memory functions, such as autobiographical memory (ABM). Here we investigate the long-term outcome of ALF and ABM in a group of patients with TEA and a single case of baclofen-induced ALF. METHODS: Study 1 involved a longitudinal follow-up of

Presurgery resting-state local graph-theory measures predict neurocognitive outcomes after brain surgery in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: This study determined the ability of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) graph-theory measures to predict neurocognitive status postsurgery in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) who underwent anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL). METHODS: A presurgical resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) condition was collected in 16 left and 16 right TLE patients who underwent ATL. In addition, patients received neuropsychological testing pre- and postsurgery in verbal and nonverbal episodic memory, language, working memory, and attention domains. Regarding the

Task-specific and general cognitive effects in Chiari malformation type I.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to use episodic memory and executive function tests to determine whether or not Chiari Malformation Type I (CM) patients experience cognitive dysfunction. BACKGROUND: CM is a neurological syndrome in which the cerebellum descends into the cervical spine causing neural compression, severe headaches, neck pain, and number of other physical symptoms. While primarily a disorder of the cervico-medullary junction, both clinicians and researchers have suspected deficits in higher-level cognitive function. DESIGN AND METHODS: We tested 24 CM patients who had undergone de

Therapeutic Metaphors Enhance Memory Systems in Mental Health Contexts.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapeutic memory plays an important role in maintaining therapeutic effects; however, the neural mechanisms of therapeutic metaphor promoting long-term memory were still unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study used metaphorical micro-counseling dialog scenarios to investigate the memory effect of therapeutic metaphor and correlated neural mechanisms. METHODS: At first, 31 participants read a mental distress problem, followed by a metaphorical or a literal solution, while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning during the encoding phase. One week later, a recognit

Associative visual agnosia: a case study.

We report a case of massive associative visual agnosia. In the light of current theories of identification and semantic knowledge organization, a deficit involving both levels of structural description system and visual semantics must be assumed to explain the case. We suggest, in line with a previous case study, an alternative account in the framework of (non abstractive) episodic models of memory.

Involuntary and voluntary memory retrieval relies on distinct neural representations and oscillatory processes.

Involuntary memory retrieval is a hallmark symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder and a frequent phenomenon in everyday autobiographical memory. However, the neural mechanisms that drive involuntary retrieval remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate how involuntary retrieval spontaneously initiates memory reactivation and how the reactivated neural representations differ in their content, distinctiveness and temporal compression from voluntary retrieval. Combining a visual half-field paradigm with electroencephalography recordings (EEG) in humans, we tracked reactivation of item-specific

A case of persistent retrograde amnesia following a dissociative fugue: neuropsychological and neurofunctional underpinnings of loss of autobiographical memory and self-awareness.

Autobiographical memory relies on complex interactions between episodic memory contents, associated emotions and a sense of self-continuity over the course of one's life. This paper reports a study based upon the case of the patient NN who suffered from a complete loss of autobiographical memory and awareness of identity subsequent to a dissociative fugue. Neuropsychological, behavioral, and functional neuroimaging tests converged on the conclusion that NN suffered from a selective retrograde amnesia following an episode of dissociative fugue, during which he had lost explicit knowledge and vi

Neuropsychological Aspects of Sporadic Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: A Case Series and Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) is a common form of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) protein in the walls of cortical and leptomeningeal arteries and arterioles. The sporadic form primarily affects the elderly and is closely associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite previous studies on cognition, the specific neuropsychological profile of CAA remains unclear. This study aims to describe the cognitive profile of CAA patients and characterize their neuropsychological aspects in the absence of a clinical diagnosis of

Black-White variation in the relationship between early educational experiences and trajectories of cognitive function among US-born older adults.

Black adults face a substantially higher risk for dementia in later life compared to their White peers. Given the critical role of educational attainment and cognitive function in later life dementia risk, this paper aims to determine if early educational experiences and educational attainment are differentially related to trajectories of cognitive status across race and if this further varies by education cohort. We use data from the Life History Mail Survey (LHMS) and prospective data on cognition from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). We restrict our sample to Black and White US-born a

Deficits in Behavioral and Neuronal Pattern Separation in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

In temporal lobe epilepsy, the ability of the dentate gyrus to limit excitatory cortical input to the hippocampus breaks down, leading to seizures. The dentate gyrus is also thought to help discriminate between similar memories by performing pattern separation, but whether epilepsy leads to a breakdown in this neural computation, and thus to mnemonic discrimination impairments, remains unknown. Here we show that temporal lobe epilepsy is characterized by behavioral deficits in mnemonic discrimination tasks, in both humans (females and males) and mice (C57Bl6 males, systemic low-dose kainate mo

Postencephalitic focal retrograde amnesia after bilateral anterior temporal lobe damage.

BACKGROUND: Marked retrograde amnesia with no or almost no anterograde amnesia is rare. Recently, a combination of ventrolateral prefrontal and temporopolar cortical lesions has been suggested as the cause of such isolated or focal retrograde amnesia. It is also assumed that when the right-sided cortical structures are damaged, autobiographical episodic memories are affected. OBJECTIVE: To search for new anatomic substrates for focal retrograde amnesia. METHODS: We performed extensive neuropsychological tests and obtained detailed neuroimages on a 43-year-old woman who showed a severe, persi

Examining the influence of brain stimulation to the medial prefrontal cortex on the self-reference effect in memory.

Past work shows that processing information in relation to the self improves memory which is known as the self-reference effect in memory. Other work suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can also improve memory. Given recent research on self-reference context memory effects (improved memory for contextual episodic details associated with self-referential processing), we were interested in examining the extent stimulation might increase the magnitude of the self-reference context memory effect. In this investigation, participants studied objects superimposed on different

Temporal specialization of the neural memory system: common and distinct neural correlates of recent and remote memory retrieval.

INTRODUCTION: Associative memory (AM) is the most basic and common memory form. It constitutes the foundation of the declarative memory system, including all semantic and episodic memory processes. However, despite numerous studies, recent and remote memory retrieval processes in AM still need further elucidation. METHODS: Here, we investigated the neurofunctional correlates of recent and remote-related AM retrieval using associative face-name pairs of famous and non-famous individuals in a population of young, healthy adults (N = 23; mean age = 23.39 years). Particular interest was placed on

Female verbal memory advantage in temporal, but not frontal lobe epilepsy.

Women show better performance than men on a range of episodic memory tasks. Evidence regarding a neuroanatomical localization of this effect remains ambiguous. It has been suggested that anterior temporal lobe structures are responsible for sex differences in verbal memory, yet temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and TLE surgery do not affect women's verbal memory advantage. Instead, frontal lobe regions may be relevant for female verbal memory superiority, i.e. by enabling more efficient encoding and retrieval strategies in women. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether women's verba

Memory consolidation from seconds to weeks: a three-stage neural network model with autonomous reinstatement dynamics.

Declarative long-term memories are not created in an instant. Gradual stabilization and temporally shifting dependence of acquired declarative memories in different brain regions-called systems consolidation-can be tracked in time by lesion experiments. The observation of temporally graded retrograde amnesia (RA) following hippocampal lesions points to a gradual transfer of memory from hippocampus to neocortical long-term memory. Spontaneous reactivations of hippocampal memories, as observed in place cell reactivations during slow-wave-sleep, are supposed to drive neocortical reinstatements an

Effects of apolipoprotein E genotype on the off-line memory consolidation.

Spontaneous brain activity or off-line activity after memory encoding is associated with memory consolidation. A few recent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) studies indicate that the RS-fMRI could map off-line memory consolidation effects. However, the gene effects on memory consolidation process remain largely unknown. Here we collected two RS-fMRI sessions, one before and another after an episodic memory encoding task, from two groups of healthy young adults, one with apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε2/ε3 and the other with APOE ε3/ε4. The ratio of regional homogeneity (
