Radiolabeled Biodistribution of Expansile Nanoparticles: Intraperitoneal Administration Results in Tumor Specific Accumulation.

Nanoparticle biodistribution in vivo is an essential component to the success of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems. Previous studies with fluorescently labeled expansile nanoparticles, or "eNPs", demonstrated a high specificity of eNPs to tumors that is achieved through a materials-based targeting strategy. However, fluorescent labeling techniques are primarily qualitative in nature and the gold-standard for quantitative evaluation of biodistribution is through radiolabeling. In this manuscript, we synthesize 14C-labeled eNPs to quantitatively evaluate the biodistribution of these parti

Patient-Reported Outcomes Can Serve as a Functional Substitute for Grip Strength.

Background  Grip strength has traditionally been seen as an objective measurement of hand function, while the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Upper Extremity (PROMIS UE) has emerged recently as a common patient-reported outcome metric for similar purposes. The primary objective of this study was to determine if a correlation exists between grip strength, PROMIS UE, and Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH) scores in hand and upper extremity clinic patients. Methods  PROMIS UE, Pain Interference (PI), and Depression (D), as well as QuickDASH were

Personality predictors of 6-month readmission in adult psychiatric inpatients.

Readmission of psychiatric inpatients is highly prevalent and places a significant financial burden on the healthcare system. Rehospitalisation is often used as a metric of quality of care in psychiatric settings, but little is known about how specific personality traits impact readmission in adult psychiatric inpatients. A convenience sample of 94 adults (mean age = 36.8 years; female = 54.3%; European American = 76.6%) at an inpatient psychiatric hospital completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF; American Psychiatric Association, 2013); demographic and medical infor

Development of the Urinary Tract in Fetal Rats: A Micro-CT Study.

INTRODUCTION: Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an established tool to study fetal development in rodents. This study aimed to use micro-CT imaging to visualize the development of the urinary tract in fetal rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fetal rats from embryonic day (ED) 15, ED17, ED19, ED21, and N0 (newborn) (n = 6 per group; 3 males) were fixed and desiccated using the "critical point" technique. We utilized the micro-CT system (SkyScan) and analyzed the resulting scans with CTAn, DataViewer, and ImageJ to visualize the morphology and quantify the volumes of kidney, bladder, adrenal gl

Disease transmission through expiratory aerosols on an urban bus.

Airborne respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 pose significant challenges to public transportation. Several recent outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 indicate the high risk of transmission among passengers on public buses if special precautions are not taken. This study presents a combined experimental and numerical analysis to identify transmission mechanisms on an urban bus and assess strategies to reduce risk. The effects of the ventilation and air-conditioning systems, opening windows and doors, and wearing masks are analyzed. Specific attention is paid to the transport of submicron- and micron-size

Dynamic prediction based on variability of a longitudinal biomarker.

BACKGROUND: Tacrolimus is given post-kidney transplant to suppress the immune system, and the amount of drug in the body is measured frequently. Higher variability over time may be indicative of poor drug adherence, leading to more adverse events. It is important to account for the variation in Tacrolimus, not just the average change over time. METHODS: Using data from the University of Colorado, we compare methods of assessing how the variability in Tacrolimus influences the hazard of de novo Donor Specific Antibodies (dnDSA), an early warning sign of graft failure. We compare multiple joint

Chronic long-term exposure to cadmium air pollution and breast cancer risk in the French E3N cohort.

Cadmium, due to its estrogen-like activity, has been suspected to increase the risk of breast cancer; however, epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent findings. We conducted a case-control study (4,059 cases and 4,059 matched controls) nested within the E3N French cohort study to estimate the risk of breast cancer associated with long-term exposure to airborne cadmium pollution, and its effect according to molecular subtype of breast cancer (estrogen receptor negative/positive [ER-/ER+] and progesterone receptor negative/positive [PR-/PR+]). Atmospheric exposure to cadmium was asses

Management of municipal solid waste open dumps immediately after the collapse: An integrated approach from Meethotamulla open dump, Sri Lanka.

Meethotamulla open dump (MOD) of Sri Lanka that has received about 290,000 metric tons of mixed MSW annually collapsed on 14th April 2017 with massive devastation. An integrated approach was attempted to control further collapse with the deployment of drone-assisted and stand-alone instrumentation. The collapsed dump was analyzed for attributes, including contours, heights, wetness, temperature levels, tension cracks, landfill gases, fire, explosion, and asphyxiation hazards with 24-h surveillance after one day of the collapse. The mode of MOD failure was implicated to be deep-seated (rotation

Complexes in aqueous cobalt(II)-2-picolinehydroxamic acid system: Formation equilibria, DNA-binding ability, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties.

The coordination properties of 2-picolinehydroxamic acid towards cobalt(II) in aqueous solution were determined by a pH-metric method and confirmed by spectroscopic (UV-Vis and ESI-MS) studies. The results show the formation of mononuclear complexes, as well as of metallacrowns (MC). All methods indicate a high tendency of 2-picolinehydroxamic acid to form cobalt(II) metallacrown 12-MC-4. ESI-MS additionally confirms 15-MC-5 and 18-MC-6, stabilized by a sodium ion and methanol. The complexes observed in the speciation model at a pH about 7.2 were studied for their DNA-binding ability. Medical Knowledge Assessment by Hematology and Medical Oncology In-Training Examinations Are Better Than Program Director Assessments at Predicting Subspecialty Certification Examination Performance.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's Next Accreditation System requires training programs to demonstrate that fellows are achieving competence in medical knowledge (MK), as part of a global assessment of clinical competency. Passing American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification examinations is recognized as a metric of MK competency. This study examines several in-training MK assessment approaches and their ability to predict performance on the ABIM Hematology or Medical Oncology Certification Examinations. The network level reproduction number for infectious diseases with both vertical and horizontal transmission.

A wide range of infectious diseases are both vertically and horizontally transmitted. Such diseases are spatially transmitted via multiple species in heterogeneous environments, typically described by complex meta-population models. The reproduction number, R0, is a critical metric predicting whether the disease can invade the meta-population system. This paper presents the reproduction number for a generic disease vertically and horizontally transmitted among multiple species in heterogeneous networks, where nodes are locations, and links reflect outgoing or incoming movement flows. The metap

Severity score system for progressive myelopathy: development and validation of a new clinical scale.

Progressive myelopathies can be secondary to inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) such as mucopolysaccharidosis, mucolipidosis, and adrenomyeloneuropathy. The available scale, Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, was validated only for degenerative vertebral diseases. Our objective is to propose and validate a new scale addressing progressive myelopathies and to present validating data for JOA in these diseases. A new scale, Severity Score System for Progressive Myelopathy (SSPROM), covering motor disability, sphincter dysfunction, spasticity, and sensory losses. Inter- and intra-rater r

Influence of active muscle contribution on the injury response of restrained car occupants.

Optimal performance of adaptive restraint systems requires an accurate assessment of occupant parameters including physical properties and pre-collision behavior of the occupant. Muscle bracing, one of the key reflexive actions adopted by car occupants to mitigate the severity of an impending collision, is ignored in restraint designing since conventional human surrogate tools used for injury assessment due to collision loading provide limited insight into this effect. This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of pre-collision muscle bracing on the injury outcome of an occupant using a simp

The efficiency paradox of discharge masking head loss in run-of-river hydropower generation.

While climate impacts on hydropower output are well-documented, plant efficiency, the critical ratio of electrical energy generated to hydraulic energy input, remains an underexplored metric, particularly in data-limited regions. This study analyzes the efficiency dynamics of the Ruzizi I plant (29.8 MW) from 2000 to 2023 to unravel the interplay between hydrological drivers and operational constraints. Building on the established context of a hydraulic trade-off between water volume and head, we employed machine learning (Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting) and opera

Towards Zero-Shot Point Cloud Registration Across Diverse Scales, Scenes, and Sensor Setups.

Some deep learning-based point cloud registration methods struggle with zero-shot generalization, often requiring target-domain retraining, fine-tuning, or dataset-specific metric parameter tuning for new environments. We identify three critical limitations: (a) fixed user-defined parameters (e.g., voxel size, search radius) that fail to generalize across varying scales, (b) learned keypoint detectors exhibit poor cross-domain transferability, and (c) absolute coordinates amplify scale mismatches between datasets. To address these three issues, we present BUFFER-X, a registration framework who

Response to: "A critical appraisal of principal component analysis of antiseizure medication-induced hostility/aggression and factor analysis of levetiracetam".

We respond to the commentary by Aphale et al. on our study titled "Principal Component Analysis of Antiseizure Medication-induced Hostility/Aggression and Factor Analysis of Levetiracetam" using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). The commentary raised four methodological points: (1) the interpretation of Component 2 as a "behavioral axis" in the principal component analysis and the classification of borderline personality disorder (BPD), (2) confounding by indication regarding risperidone, (3) the choice of the reporting odds ratio (ROR) over Bayesian meth

In Vivo Assessment of SED: A Novel Biomechanical Indicator for Periodontal Tissue Remodeling in Clear Aligner Therapy.

PURPOSE: Orthodontic tooth movement fundamentally relies on force-driven remodeling of periodontal tissues. However, the therapeutic predictability of clear aligner therapy (CAT) remains limited, particularly in periodontal-compromised patients. This limitation stems from a critical gap between biomechanical loading and biological remodeling. This study innovatively adopts strain energy density (SED) as a biomechanical parameter to investigate the integrated biomechanical and biological responses of the periodontium to CAT. METHODS: We employed a cross-scale biomimetic framework that combined

Smart Sensor-Driven Gait Rehabilitation Walker Using Machine Learning for Predictive Home-Based Therapy.

Abnormal gait associated with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders represents a growing clinical burden, particularly in aging populations. This study presents a modular, low-cost Smart Rehabilitation Walker (SRW) that integrates multimodal sensing and real-time haptic feedback to enable simultaneous gait monitoring and corrective intervention in both clinical and home environments. The system combines force-sensing resistors for bilateral load symmetry assessment, inertial measurement units for fall detection, and surface electromyography (sEMG) for neuromuscular activity monitoring wi

Supporting Safer Surgery: System-Level Interventions to Enhance Pediatric Perioperative Safety.

BACKGROUND: Over a 21-month period, a cluster of 13 safety events was observed in a perioperative service area that met criteria as either serious safety events per the health care performance improvement safety event classification system or Joint Commission sentinel events. This cluster of events served as the impetus to deploy high reliability organization (HRO) interventions to reduce potential future harm. METHODS: To increase safety awareness and improve clinical safety across perioperative services, 3 interventions were iteratively implemented over a 6-month period: (1) surgical safety

The two-body problem in interpersonal distance: A process model of social space regulation in psychopathology.

Interpersonal distance (IPD), the physical proximity individuals maintain during face-to-face interaction, is disrupted across a range of disorders involving distorted or threat-biased body representation, from eating disorders to social anxiety and schizophrenia. The dominant mechanistic account links this disruption to peripersonal space (PPS), modeling IPD as the output of the perceiver's own defensive boundary. This account is egocentric: it treats the approaching person as a source of threat rather than as a body whose size, kinematics, and spatial requirements must themselves be represen
