The in vitro activity of CGP 31523A, an aminothiazolyl cephem, was compared to that of other cephalosporins--imipenem, aztreonam, carbenicillin, and gentamicin. CGP 31523A inhibited E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis, C. diversus, K. oxytoca, P. stuartii, Salmonella and Shigella at less than or equal to 0.25 micrograms/ml. Cefmenoxime, a new cephalosporin, was given to fifty patients (28 male and 22 female) aged 15 to 86 years with infection of the urinary tract or prostate. Urinary tract infections, i.e. cystitis in 20 cases and pyelonephritis in 21, were usually chronic and associated with urologic anomalies. Nine patients had infection of the prostate. Amniotic membranes are widely used in a multitude of surgical applications and have been shown to reduce bacterial counts and promote healing in infected wounds. Antibacterial properties of amniotic fluid are well documented and the presence of many potentially antibacterial factors has been demonstrated. Two patients with renal cortical abscesses were treated successfully by an intensive antibiotic regimen together with percutaneous aspiration, rather than by the conventional treatment of open drainage, which often is followed by secondary nephrectomy. This adaptation of percutaneous aspiration to the management of renal carbuncle coincides with a change in the causative microorganism which today is often a gram-negative coliform rather than a hematogenously borne staphylococcus, which usually complicates some pre-existing abnormality in the urinary tract.

We have treated 45 cases of urinary tract infection with cefazolin (i.m.) and cure was achieved in 35 (77.77%). 26 of the 28 patients (92.85%) with acute cystitis who received 250 mg every 12 h for 6-10 days were cured. 17 patients with pyelonephritis received 500 mg every 12 h during 10-14 days and therapeutical success was achieved in 9 of them (52.94%). Laboratory control was carried out at the initiation of therapy, at the end, and 1 month after therapy. Tolerance to injections of cefazolin was considered good and only in one case appeared a mild eosinophia.
