Detection of the Lychee Erinose Mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyidae) in Florida, USA: A Comparison with Other Alien Populations.

The lychee erinose mite (LEM), Aceria litchii (Keifer) is a serious pest of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). LEM causes a type of gall called 'erineum' (abnormal felty growth of trichomes from the epidermis), where it feeds, reproduces and protects itself from biotic and abiotic adversities. In February of 2018, LEM was found in a commercial lychee orchard on Pine Island, Florida. Infestations were recorded on young leaves, stems, and inflorescences of approximately 30 young trees (1.5-3.0 yrs.) of three lychee varieties presenting abundant new growth. Although LEM is present in Hawaii, this m

[Mites, lice and fleas. Ectoparasitoses in infancy and childhood].

Ectoparasitoses or epizoonoses are skin disorders caused by animal parasites living on the body surface. Worldwide they are among the most frequent dermatoses, particularly in infancy and childhood. Distinguishing between conditions caused by permanent and temporary ectoparasites is important for the course and the required therapy. Permanent ectoparasites, such as scabies mite and head louse, spend all their life in or on the skin and have to be killed on the patient with suitable acaricides or pediculicides. In contrast, temporary ectoparasites, as animal mites or fleas, attack humans only f

Lotilaner Ophthalmic Solution 0.25%: First Approval.

Lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% (XDEMVY™), a gamma-aminobutyric acid-gated chloride channel (GABA-Cl) inhibitor selective for mites, is being developed by Tarsus Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction in patients with Demodex lid infestation (Demodex-induced meibomianitis). On 24 July 2023, lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% received its first approval in the USA for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis. The agent is also currently in phase 3 development for Demodex blepharitis in China and phase 2 development for Demodex-induced meibomian

Topical ivermectin ointment treatment of Demodex blepharitis: a 6-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of topical ivermectin 1% ointment, for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis. METHODS: A retrospective study was designed to review electronic medical records of patients seen between January 2017 and December 2022, who had a diagnosis of Demodex blepharitis, treated with topical ivermectin 1% with at least 6 months of follow-up (Centro de Ojos Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina). The presence of collarettes was graded from 0 to 4. An imaging system (Keratograph) was used, to evaluate tear meniscus height (TMH), non-invasive tear break-up time (NIKBUT), and d

Prevalence of chigger mites and Orientia tsutsugamushi strains in northern regions of Gangwon-do, Korea.

The present study aimed to survey the prevalence of chigger mites and Orientia tsutsugamushi (O. tsutsugamushi) infection in the northern regions of Gangwon-do, Korea. From early February to early June 2015, a total of 17,050 chiggers were collected from striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius, in Cheorwon-gun, Hwacheon-gun, Yanggu-gun, and Goseong-gun, which are well-known endemic areas of scrub typhus in Korea. The chiggers were analyzed using molecular genomic methods, as previously described. Among the 7,964 identified chiggers, the predominant species was Leptotrombidium pallidum (76.9%), f

High prevalence and low diversity of chigger infestation in small mammals found in Bangkok Metropolitan parks.

Chiggers are recognized as vectors of scrub typhus disease caused by the bacteria, Orientia tsutsugamushi. The risk of disease exposure is mainly related to chigger bites when humans or animals roam into vector-infested habitats. In big cities, urban public parks could provide areas for the animal-human interface and zoonotic pathogen transmission. The ecology and epidemiology of urban scrub typhus are still poorly understood in Thailand. Small mammals were trapped and examined for chigger infestation in urban public parks across metropolitan Bangkok, Thailand. We found a high prevalence of in

Wild Rodents and Their Ectoparasites in an Enzootic Plague Focus, Western Iran.

Introduction: Entomological surveys of ectoparasites and their hosts are an essential tool for assessing the risks of rodent-borne diseases transmitted to humans by arthropod vectors. Objectives: This study was carried out to update the epidemiological data of plague with respect to species compositions of the rodents and their ectoparasites at enzootic foci located in Kurdistan Province, Iran. Methods: The rodents' habitats were selected based on past records of plague and subclimates in each study district with especial attention to the vegetation type. The trapped rodents were anesthetized

Energetic costs of mange in wolves estimated from infrared thermography.

Parasites, by definition, extract energy from their hosts and thus affect trophic and food web dynamics even when the parasite may have limited effects on host population size. We studied the energetic costs of mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in wolves (Canis lupus) using thermal cameras to estimate heat losses associated with compromised insulation during the winter. We combined the field data of known, naturally infected wolves with a data set on captive wolves with shaved patches of fur as a positive control to simulate mange-induced hair loss. We predict that during the winter in Montana, more s

OBJECTIVES: To determine factors associated with absenteeism, presenteeism, work productivity loss (WPL), and daily activity impairment in UK patients with AxSpA using standardised measures. METHODS: 490 patients with AxSpA completed (1) Work Productivity and Impairment questionnaire (WPAI), providing measures for absenteeism, presenteeism, WPL and daily activity impairment, and (2) BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI, Jenkins Sleep scale, Patient Global Assessment disease activity (PGA), back pain night and anytime, EQ-5D for mobility, self-care, daily activities, pain/discomfort, anxiety/depression, EQ-VA

A proposed new therapeutic protocol for the treatment of canine mange with ivermectin.

Ivermectin was used orally for the treatment of generalized demodicosis or scabies in 222 dogs. The dose was increased gradually from 50 microg/kg body weight on day one, 100 microg/kg body weight on day two, 150 microg/kg body weight on day three, 200 microg/kg body weight on day four, to the final dose of 300 microg/kg body weight on day five. This dose was continued daily until resolution for demodicosis and given four times at seven-day intervals for scabies. Two patients developed clinical ivermectin toxicity after two and 10 days, respectively, and recovered once the drug was discontinue

Unilateral demodicidosis.

A 45-year-old man presented with a unilateral, papulopustular, rosacealike, chronic dermatitis which involved the left portion of the forehead and the eyelids unilaterally. Many Demodex mites were found in the follicles of the affected area. Topical crotamiton cleared the lesions after an unsuccessful trial with oral metronidazole. This observation provides further evidence that demodicidosis is a condition distinct from common rosacea.

[Effectiveness of moxidectin (Cydectin inj.) in mixed Psoroptes ovis and Sarcoptes ovis infestations in sheep].

Field efficacy of moxidectin injectable was evaluated in sheep naturally infected with both Psoroptes ovis and Sarcoptes ovis mange. Three groups of fifteen ewes were selected from the flock based on parasitological and clinical status. Group 1 remained as untreated controls. Group 2 animals received a subcutaneous injection of moxidectin at 0.2 mg/kg body weight on Day 0; Group 3 animals received 0.2 mg/kg moxidectin twice on Day 0 and Day 7. Efficacy was assessed by taking skin scrapings from each animal on Days -4, 0, 7, 14, 28 and 35 post treatment (P.T.) and counting viable mite stages an
