BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) collected from diverse healthcare institutions offer a rich and representative data source for clinical research. Federated learning enables analysis of these distributed data without sharing sensitive patient-level information, preserving privacy. However, missing data remain a major challenge and can introduce substantial bias if not properly addressed. Very few distributed imputation methods currently exist, and they fail to account for two critical aspects of EHR data: correlation within sites and variability across sites. We aim to fill this im

Mixed-type outcome data occur when the outcome variable's distribution is a mixture of both continuous and discrete ordinal variables. Such mixed-type outcomes are common in biomedical, psychological, and the health sciences, particularly for variables having either a detection or quantitation limit. When interest lies in identifying a combination of genomic features associated with a mixed-type outcome, any method used would require a variable selection strategy for high-dimensional data. Unfortunately, few variable selection methods exist for modeling a mixed-type outcome when the covariate

Multilevel modeling (MLM) is increasingly applied in oral health research to reflect the hierarchical structure of dental data, in which teeth are nested within individuals and individuals are embedded within social and environmental contexts. By partitioning both within- and between-individual variability, MLM improves estimate precision, reduces bias, and strengthens causal interpretation, thereby enhancing the evidence base for preventive strategies, clinical practice, and public health policy. This review synthesizes recent methodological developments and ongoing challenges in the applicat

A new inner weighting scheme for Partial Least Squares - Path Modelling (PLS-PM) is proposed to detect and approximate nonlinear structural relationships in Structural Equation Models (SEM). PLS-PM is an iterative method used for the estimation of Structural Equation Models (SEM), a widely used analytical tool for assessing causal relationships between latent variables. However, PLS-PM struggles to address the structural nonlinear relationships. To address this limitation, a new PLS-PM inner weighting scheme, smooth weighting, is proposed as an additional option to the traditional centroid, fa

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify existing methodological approaches and input parameters to estimate heat-related excess mortality based on real-case human populations from studies conducted worldwide.
INTRODUCTION: Human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of heat waves, leading to a rise in heat-related deaths globally. As direct measurement of heat-related mortality is challenging, many countries have implemented a statistical model to estimate excess deaths, with ongoing efforts to refine it. An overview of methodological approaches and input pa

BACKGROUND: Many research domains are producing large, multi-scale, multi-modal datasets at growing rates with mixed variable types (continuous, discrete, censored). Identifying possible cause-effect associations in such datasets is essential for predicting outcomes and proposing possible interventions. Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) have emerged as a robust, interpretable way to analyze such datasets, but current graph learning algorithms cannot incorporate time-to-event (censored) variables, which are important in many systems (e.g., patient survival). Instead, regression models are t

This simulation study examined the performance of commonly used fit indices in traditional Bayesian estimation, including posterior predictive p value (PPP), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and deviance information criterion (DIC), as well as the Bayesian version of approximate fit indices, such as Bayesian comparative fit index (BCFI), Bayesian Tucker-Lewis Index (BTLI), and Bayesian root mean square error of approximation (BRMSEA), in testing approximate measurement invariance (AMI) using multigroup Bayesian structural equation modeling (MG-BSEM) in the context of cross-cultural resear

By using generalized estimating equation, random intercept model, random coefficients model, and generalized linear model respectively, this study obtained residuals for predictors and outcomes as new predictors and outcomes for multivariate random forest (MRF) analysis. Simulation experiments were conducted to compare the performance of these methods in confounding adjustment under scenarios with varying outcome correlations, causal effect magnitudes, numbers of confounding factors, and sample sizes. United Kingdom Biobank data were used for further validation. Simulation results showed that

OBJECTIVES: Accurate prediction models for imported infectious diseases are essential for early warning, cross-border surveillance, and resource allocation. Despite the growing number of predictive models for imported infectious diseases, substantial heterogeneity in model structure, reporting, and performance across studies has led to confusion for researchers and limited practical uptake, even for the same disease.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of predictive models for imported infectious diseases, following PRISMA guidelines. Searches in PubMed, Scopus, and Embase (through July

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a public health burden in Indonesia with substantial provincial variation. We modelled province-level DHF counts in 2023 using Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive Poisson models with population offsets. Predictors were average annual temperature (per 1°C) and the number of public health workers (province-level count). Spatial dependence was supported by Moran's I=0.4689 (p=0.021). We fitted models using Besag-York-Mollié (BYM) and Leroux priors via Markov chain Monte Carlo and compared fit using the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) and the Wa

Modeling with multidimensional arrays, or tensors, often presents a problem due to high dimensionality. In addition, these structures typically exhibit inherent sparsity, requiring the use of regularization methods to properly characterize an association between a tensor covariate and a scalar response. We propose a Bayesian method to efficiently model a scalar response with a tensor covariate using the Tucker tensor decomposition in order to retain the spatial relationship within a tensor coefficient, while reducing the number of parameters varying within the model and applying regularization

PURPOSE: This study introduces Inf.P, a novel method for determining optimal cut-off points using the inflection point approach in the absence of a gold standard. It models the nonlinear relationship between raw scores and latent class probabilities with a cubic polynomial function, offering a data-driven boundary that reflects the underlying latent structure. Inf.P enhances diagnostic precision of scale-based assessments by providing more accurate thresholds for distinguishing different levels of latent attributes.
METHODS: To evaluate the Inf.P, high- and low-attribute groups were created f

Estimating a patient's disease trajectory as defined by clinical measures is an essential task in medicine. Given multiple biomarkers, there is a practical choice of whether to estimate the joint distribution of all biomarkers in a single model or to model the univariate marginal distribution of each marker separately ignoring the covariance structure among measures. To fully utilize all trajectory-relevant information in multiple longitudinal markers, a joint model is required, but its complexity and computational burden may only be warranted when joint estimates of trajectories are substanti

The Mekong Delta Region (MDR) of Vietnam faces increasing vulnerability to severe dengue outbreaks due to urbanization, globalization, and climate change, necessitating effective early warning systems for outbreak mitigation. This study developed a probabilistic forecasting model to predict dengue incidence and outbreaks with 1-3-month lead times, incorporating meteorological, sociodemographic, preventive, and epidemiological data. A total of 72 models were evaluated, with top performers from spatiotemporal models, supervised PCA, and semi-mechanistic hhh4 frameworks combined into an ensemble.

BACKGROUND: Somatic mutational signatures elucidate molecular vulnerabilities to therapy, and therefore detecting signatures and classifying tumors with respect to signatures has clinical value. However, identifying the etiology of the mutational signatures remains a statistical challenge, with both small sample sizes and high variability in classification algorithms posing barriers. As a result, few signatures have been strongly linked to particular risk factors.
METHODS: Here, we develop a statistical model, Diffsig, for estimating the association of one or more continuous or categorical ri

Multivariate panel count data arise when there are multiple types of recurrent events, and the observation for each study subject consists of the number of recurrent events of each type between two successive examinations. We formulate the effects of potentially time-dependent covariates on multiple types of recurrent events through proportional rates models, while leaving the dependence structures of the related recurrent events completely unspecified. We employ nonparametric maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation under the working assumptions that all types of events are independent and each t
