A wireless infrared thermometry device for postoperative flap monitoring: Proof of concept in a porcine flap model.

The application of flap surgery is becoming more and more widespread with the development of microsurgical techniques. Currently, postoperative blood flow monitoring of flaps is still mainly assessed by medical staff for traditional clinical parameters, which has the disadvantage of being subjective and unable to monitor in real-time. This study describes a self-contained infrared wireless infrared thermometry device for flap blood supply monitoring and evaluates its effectiveness on eight porcine flap models. A scapular muscle flap model was established using eight small pigs, and the vessels

Transcutaneous Flexible Sensor for In Vivo Photonic Detection of pH and Lactate.

Clinical research shows that frequent measurements of both pH and lactate can help guide therapy and improve patient outcome. However, current methods of sampling blood pH and lactate make it impractical to take readings frequently (due to the heightened risk of blood infection and anemia). As a solution, we have engineered a subcutaneous pH and lactate sensor (PALS) that can provide continuous, physiologically relevant measurements. To measure pH, a sheet containing a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye is placed over 400 and 465 nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a filter-coated photodetector. The

Pulse oximetry respiratory monitoring for assessment of acute childhood wheeze.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of objective measures to assess children with acute wheezing episodes. Increased respiratory rate (RR) and pulsus paradoxus (PP) are recognised markers, but poorly recorded in practice. We examined whether they can be reliably assessed from a pulse oximeter plethysmogram ('pleth') trace and predict clinical outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 44 children aged 1-7 years attending hospital with acute wheeze, following initial 'burst' bronchodilator therapy (BT), and used custom software to measure RR and assess PP from oximeter pleth traces. Traces were examined

Can serum albumin level affect the transcutaneous bilirubinometry in term neonates?

BACKGROUND: Jaundice is the quite common benign condition in neonates, but due to its potential toxicity, neonates must be monitored. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of serum albumin level on the transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measurements in term neonates with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. METHODS: Serum albumin and total serum bilirubin (TSB) of 252 jaundiced term neonates were estimated and simultaneously TcB was measured over sternum and the effect of serum albumin on TcB measurements was evaluated. RESULTS: The correlation between TSB and TcB was linear and significant fo

Evaluation of the accuracy of a non-invasive hemoglobin-monitoring device in schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a public health problem in children and adolescents that is characterized by reduced hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Non-invasive monitoring devices can measure Hb levels continuously without pain or discomfort; however, little is known about their accuracy in children and adolescents. This study estimated the accuracy of a non-invasive Hb monitor in this age group. METHODS: Participants were outpatients visiting the Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center for blood tests between January and March 2019. Hb levels were measured using both non-invasive A

Development of a Smartphone-Based Optical Device to Measure Hemoglobin Concentration Changes for Remote Monitoring of Wounds.

Telemedicine (TM) can revolutionize the impact of diabetic wound care management, along with tools for remote patient monitoring (RPM). There are no low-cost mobile RPM devices for TM technology to provide comprehensive (visual and physiological) clinical assessments. Here, a novel low-cost smartphone-based optical imaging device has been developed to provide physiological measurements of tissues in terms of hemoglobin concentration maps. The device (SmartPhone Oxygenation Tool-SPOT) constitutes an add-on optical module, a smartphone, and a custom app to automate data acquisition while syncing

Fear Recognition for Women Using a Reduced Set of Physiological Signals.

Emotion recognition is benefitting from the latest research into physiological monitoring and wireless communications, among other remarkable achievements. These technologies can indeed provide solutions to protect vulnerable people in scenarios such as personal assaults, the abuse of children or the elderly, gender violence or sexual aggression. Cyberphysical systems using smart sensors, artificial intelligence and wearable and inconspicuous devices can serve as bodyguards to detect these risky situations (through fear-related emotion detection) and automatically trigger a protection protocol

Ventriculomegaly in children: nocturnal ICP dynamics identify pressure-compensated but active paediatric hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric ventriculomegaly without obvious signs or symptoms of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) is often interpreted as resulting from either relative brain atrophy, arrested "benign" hydrocephalus, or "successful" endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). We hypothesise that the typical ICP "signature" found in symptomatic hydrocephalus can be present in asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic children, indicating pressure-compensated, but active hydrocephalus. METHODS: A total of 37 children fulfilling the mentioned criteria underwent computerised ICP overnight monitoring (ONM). Fi

Evaluation of two different etorphine doses combined with azaperone in blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) immobilisation.

Chemical immobilisation is essential for veterinarians to perform medical procedures in wild African ungulates. Potent opioids combined with neuroleptic drugs are most often used for this purpose. The present study aimed at comparing the quality of immobilisation and effects on physiological variables between a high (high etorphine-azaperone [HE]: 0.09 mg kg-1) and low etorphine dose (low etorphine-azaperone [LE]: 0.05 mg kg-1), both combined with azaperone (0.35 mg kg-1), in 12 adult female boma-acclimatised blesbok. It was hypothesised that a reduction in etorphine's dose in combination with

A performance comparison of the most commonly used minimally invasive monitors of cardiac output.

BACKGROUND: Shock is common in critically ill and injured patients. Survival during shock is highly dependent on rapid restoration of tissue oxygenation with therapeutic goals based on cardiac output (CO) optimization. Despite the clinical availability of numerous minimally invasive monitors of CO, limited supporting performance data are available. METHODS: Following approval of the University of Saskatchewan Animal Research Ethics Board, we assessed the performance and trending ability of PiCCOplus™, FloTrac™, and CardioQ-ODM™ across a range of CO states in pigs. In addition, we assessed the

Establishment of long-term chronic recording technique of in vivo ovarian parenchymal temperature in Japanese Black cows.

The reproductive performance of cattle can be suppressed by heat stress. Reproductive organ temperature, especially ovarian temperature, may affect follicle development and ovulation. The establishment of a technique for long-term measurement of ovarian temperature could prove useful in understanding the mechanisms underlying the temperature-dependent changes in follicular development and subsequent ovulation in cows. Here we report a novel method facilitating long-term and continuous recording of ovarian parenchymal temperature in cows. The method revealed that the ovarian temperature in the

Validation of an ear tag-based accelerometer system for detecting grazing behavior of dairy cows.

The objective of the study was to develop a grazing algorithm for an ear tag-based accelerometer system (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) and to validate the grazing algorithm with data from a noseband sensor. The ear tag has an acceleration sensor, a radio chip, and temperature sensor for calibration and it can monitor rumination and detect estrus and localization. To validate the ear tag, a noseband sensor (RumiWatch, Itin and Hoch GmbH, Liestal, Switzerland) was used. The noseband sensor detects pressure and acceleration patterns, and, with a software program specific to the noseband, press

[Noninvasive hemoglobin monitoring in clinical trials: a systematic review and meta-analysis].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The measurement of hemoglobin concentration (Hb) by co-oximetry is an innovative technique that offers efficiency and agility in the processing of information regarding the measurement of Hb obtained through continuous, non-invasive and rapid monitoring. Because of this attribute, it avoids unnecessary exposures of the patient to invasive procedures by allowing a reduction in the number of blood samples for evaluation and other unnecessary therapies. It also helps to make decisions about the need for transfusion and how to handle it. The objective of this study is to

Improvement in Oxygenation Utilizing Transpulmonary Pressure Monitoring for Optimal Positive End-Expiratory Pressure in Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Case Report.

In severe pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, data are lacking on methods to measure and set optimal positive end-expiratory pressure. We present a 2-year-old girl with Trisomy 21 who developed severe pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome and refractory hypoxemia from human metapneumovirus pneumonia. Esophageal manometry was utilized to measure transpulmonary pressure, and positive end-expiratory pressure was increased to 19 cm H2O, resulting in rapid improvement in oxygenation. Hemodynamics remained adequate without intervention. The patient improved and survived without se
