Motion Analysis of the Wrist and Finger Joints in Sport Climbing.

Climbing is a fast-growing sport, with one of the most common injuries being a rupture of the finger flexor tendon pulley. The strain on pulleys increases as finger joints flex. However, to our knowledge, no study has conducted a kinematic analysis of climbers' fingers. Thus, this study aimed to examine finger kinematics during typical climbing tasks. Eleven elite climbers performed a sequence of four climbing moves, which were recorded by an optical motion capture system. Participants used crimp, half-crimp, and open-hand grips for three trials each, with the fourth condition involving campus…

Exercises with the StretchPole improve shoulder joint range of motion.

The 'StretchPole' foam roller product is mainly used to loosen muscle groups and joints in the deeper layers of the body that are normally inaccessible to the human hand, and to realign the skeletal structure by lying on the pole and performing exercises. It is also used to strengthen the core, which plays an important role in postural maintenance and stability. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the 'Solacon' exercise routine using a StretchPole on shoulder joint range of motion. Forty healthy participants performed Solacon exercises using a StretchPole. The specific me…

Removal of Motion Artifacts in Capacitive Electrocardiogram Acquisition: A Review.

Capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) systems are increasingly used for the monitoring of cardiac activity. They can operate within the presence of a small layer of air, hair or cloth and do not require a qualified technician. They can be integrated into wearables, clothing or objects of daily life, such as beds or chairs. While they offer many advantages over conventional electrocardiogram systems (ECG) that rely on wet electrodes, they are more prone to be affected by motion artifacts (MAs). These effects, which are due to the relative movement of the electrode in relation to the skin, are sev…

Microsecond Motion of the Bacterial Transporter EmrE in Lipid Bilayers.

The bacterial transporter EmrE is a homo-dimeric membrane protein that effluxes cationic polyaromatic substrates against the concentration g … d-dependent 15N R1ρ relaxation rates. This relaxation dispersion indicates the presence of backbone motions at a rate of about 6000 s-1 at 280 K for the protein at both acidic and basic pH. This motional rate is 3 orders of magnitude faster than the alternating access rate but is within the range estimated for substrate binding. We propose that these mic …

The (in)effectiveness of anticipatory vibrotactile cues in mitigating motion sickness.

The introduction of (fully) automated vehicles has generated a re-interest in motion sickness, given that passengers suffer much more from motion sickness compared to car drivers. A suggested solution is to improve the anticipation of passive self-motion via cues that alert passengers of changes in the upcoming motion trajectory. We already know that auditory or visual cues can mitigate motion sickness. In this study, we used anticipatory vibrotactile cues that do not interfere with the (audio)visual tasks passengers may want to perform. We wanted to investigate (1) whether anticipatory vibrot…

The ankle in XLH: Reduced motion, power and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: X-linked hypophosphatemia (OMIM 307800) is a rare bone disease caused by a phosphate-wasting condition with lifelong clinical consequences. Those affected suffer from bone pain, complex skeletal deformities, impaired mobility and a reduced quality of life. Early osteoarthritis and reduced range of motion of the lower limbs are known pathologies in XLH patients. However, XLH-specific data on the affected compartments such as the ankle joint through the evaluation of radiographic and gait analysis data is still lacking. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients w…

Is muscle stiffness a determinant for range of motion in the leg muscles?

Previous training studies with comprehensive stretching durations have reported that an increase in range of motion (ROM) can be related to decreases in muscle stiffness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the passive muscle stiffness of three muscle groups (triceps surae, quadriceps, hamstrings) to the respective joint ROM. Thirty-six healthy male soccer players volunteered in this study. After a standardized warm-up, the muscle stiffness was tested via shear wave elastography in six muscles (gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis, rectus femoris, semite…

Solvent effects on the motion of a crown ether/amino rotaxane.

Solvents have been recognized as a significant factor for modulating the shuttle of rotaxanes and regulating their functions regarding molecular machines by a lot of published studies. The mechanism of the effects of solvents on the motion of crown ether/amino rotaxanes, however, remains unclear. In this work, a rotaxane, formed by dibenzo-24-crown-8 (C[8]) and a dumbbell-shaped axle with two positively charged amino groups, was investigated at the atom level. Two-dimensional free-energy landscapes characterizing the conformational change of C[8] and the shuttling motions in chloroform and wat…

Spatiotemporal dynamics of responses to biological motion in the human brain.

We sought to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of biological motion perception. We presented observers with biological motion walkers that differed in terms of form coherence or kinematics (i.e., the presence or absence of natural acceleration). Participants were asked to discriminate the facing direction of the stimuli while their magnetoencephalographic responses were concurrently imaged. We found that two univariate response components can be observed around ~200 msec and ~650 msec post-stimulus onset, each engaging lateral-occipital and parietal cortex prior to temporal and fro…

Spontaneous synchronization of motion in pedestrian crowds of different densities.

Interacting pedestrians in a crowd spontaneously adjust their footsteps and align their respective stepping phases. This self-organization phenomenon is known as synchronization. However, it is unclear why and how synchronization forms spontaneously under different density conditions, or what functional benefit synchronization offers for the collective motion of humans. Here, we conducted a single-file crowd motion experiment that directly tracked the alternating movement of both legs of interacting pedestrians. We show that synchronization is most likely to be triggered at the same density at…

The Impact of Continuous Passive Motion on Heterotopic Ossification Maturation.

Heterotopic ossification is the formation of pathological bone in soft tissues. It is postulated that continuous passive motion is a helpful adjuvant in the halt of the heterotopic ossification progression and the maintenance or increase of the joint mobility. The purpose of this clinical case study is to present the effectiveness of continuous passive motion. A 46-yr-old male patient experiencing right hemiparesis arrived in our rehabilitation department with limitation on passive flexion of the right hip. On x-ray of the pelvis, immature heterotopic bone formation was found. To halt this ong…

A Model for the Origin of Motion Direction Selectivity in Visual Cortex.

Motion perception is a vital part of our sensory repertoire in that it contributes to navigation, awareness of moving objects, and communication. Motion sense in carnivores and primates originates with primary visual cortical neurons selective for motion direction. More than 60 years after the discovery of these neurons, there is still no consensus on the mechanism underlying direction selectivity. This paper describes a model of the cat's visual system in which direction selectivity results from the well-documented orientation selectivity of inhibitory neurons: inhomogeneities in the orientat…

Objective and subjective responses to motion sickness: the group and the individual.

We investigated and modeled the temporal evolution of motion sickness in a highly dynamic sickening drive. Slalom maneuvers were performed in a passenger vehicle, resulting in lateral accelerations of 0.4 g at 0.2 Hz, to which participants were subjected as passengers for up to 30 min. Subjective motion sickness was recorded throughout the sickening drive using the MISC scale. In addition, physiological and postural responses were evaluated by recording head roll, galvanic skin response (GSR) and electrocardiography (ECG). Experiment 1 compared external vision (normal view through front and si…

Motion analysis for the evaluation of muscle overactivity: A point of view.

Muscle overactivity is a general term for pathological increases in muscle activity such as spasticity. It is caused by damage to the centra … le overactivity should be evaluated by using objective measures in dynamic conditions. Instrumental motion analysis systems that include 3-D motion analysis and electromyography are very useful for this purpose. The method can be used to identify patterns of abnormal muscle activity that can be related to abnormal kinematic patterns. It allows for object …

Ulnar Nerve Strain in Functional Elbow and Shoulder Motions.

Background: Shoulder and elbow motions can affect ulnar nerve strain. However, there is no evidence that links this kind of strain to specific activities. The purpose of this study was to examine ulnar nerve strain at the elbow resulting from normal daily activities. Methods: This study was conducted using thirty fresh frozen cadaveric elbows from subjects who had no deformities or history of previous upper extremity surgery. Strain was calculated based on nerve elongation. Ulnar nerve strain at the elbow from motion related to common daily activities was measured in both normal nerves and ner…

Are there characteristic motion patterns in the lumbar spine during flexion?

Flexion is the main motion of the lumbar spine. While in vitro tests with pure moments suggest larger intra-segmental rotations for the more caudal segments, in vivo results show diverging motion distributions. The present study analysed the motion distribution in vivo of 320 asymptomatic subjects. The change of the back curvature between standing and upper body flexion was determined using a non-invasive measurement device. Linear, bilinear, trilinear, quadratic, and cubic regression models were fitted to the segmental motion distribution over the lengths of the lordosis to categorise charact…

Motion Sickness Prediction in Aeromedical Evacuation of Patients with Ebola.

INTRODUCTION: Aeromedical evacuation of patients affected by severe infectious diseases inside an aircraft transit isolator (ATI) system is at potential risk of motion sickness (MS). A test flight was then conducted to quantify this risk during the transfer of an Ebola patient from West Africa to Italy. CASE REPORT: A mannequin was inserted inside an ATI and instrumented to provide acceleration parameters throughout the test flight. The analysis of the data predicted a MS incidence of about 2% for a 6-h flight, so the decision to use anti-MS drugs only in selected cases was taken (i.e., those…
