To our knowledge, direct measurement of active closure of the bladder neck during bladder contraction resulting in bladder neck dyssynergia and outflow obstruction has not yet been demonstrated. A total of 34 spinal cord injury patients underwent urodynamic investigation with 2 micro-transducer catheters in the urethrovesical and anorectal regions, respectively. Proper localization of the transducers was done with an image intensifier. The respective role of the striated and smooth muscles on bladder neck activity was evaluated after pudendal nerve blocks and phentolamine injections. Of the pa

For the management of persistent rectal achalasia after the Soave endorectal pull-through procedure, we have used posterior sagittal myectomy of the remaining aganglionic rectal muscular cuff, and have had satisfactory outcomes in five patients. Via a posterior sagittal skin incision, the posterior aspect of the rectal muscular cuff is reached. With the striated muscular complex retracted downward, the level of the dentate line is identified on the posterior wall of the rectum with the aid of the surgeon's finger inserted inside the anorectum. Two parallel longitudinal incisions are made on th

Thirty-two cases of malignant Müllerian tumours of the uterus of the mixed mesodermal type were investigated. Histological examinations were performed on tissue obtained during curettage or biopsy and/or surgical removal of the uterus; in 4 cases postmortem examination was also carried out. The biphasic tumours of the uterus were classified into four groups and comprised 44% of alle uterine sarcomas. In 10 of the 28 cases in which uterine curettage or cervical biopsy was carried out, the final diagnosis was clarified when the tumorous uterus was removed. The prognosis was poorer for heterologo

The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) often develops immune-related adverse events (irAEs). However, irAEs-induced multi-organ injuries remain a rare event. We herein report a case of multi-organ injuries induced by tislelizumab in a lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) patient. A 68-year-old man had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel, carboplatin, and tislelizumab. He presented with a 1-month history of nausea and poor appetite after the second dose of therapy. During investigations, rhabdomyolysis, liver, kidney, and thyroid damage were detected. After multi-disciplin

The term rhabdomyolysis describes a damage involving striated muscle cells or fibers, often complicated by acute kidney injury. This syndrome can have different causes, but it is generally divided into two main categories: traumatic and non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis. Among medical causes, drugs and abuse substances play a pivotal role, being opioids, alcohol, cocaine and other substances of abuse. Among drugs, the case of statins is certainly the best known. Here we describe a paradigmatic case of a man treated with success and good tolerance for years with rosuvastatin, who developed a severe

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. It has been estimated that up to half of DCM cases are hereditary. Mutations in more than 50 genes, primarily autosomal dominant, have been reported. Although rare, recessive mutations are thought to contribute considerably to DCM, especially in young children. Here we identified a novel recessive mutation in the striated muscle enriched protein kinase (SPEG, p. E1680K) gene in a family with nonsyndromic, early onset DCM. To ascertain the pathogenicity of this mutation, we generated SPEG E1680K homozygous

Myofibrillary myopathies (MFM) are hereditary myopathies histologically characterized by degeneration of myofibrils and aggregation of proteins in striated muscle. Cardiomyopathy is common in MFM but the pathophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. The BAG3-Pro209Leu mutation is associated with early onset MFM and severe restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), often necessitating heart transplantation during childhood. We report on a young male patient with a BAG3-Pro209Leu mutation who underwent heart transplantation at eight years of age. Detailed morphological analyses of the explanted

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) bind to voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav) and block conduction of action potential in excitable cells. This study aimed to (i) characterize Nav sequences in Crassostrea gigas and (ii) investigate a putative relation between Nav and PST-bioaccumulation in oysters. The phylogenetic analysis highlighted two types of Nav in C. gigas: a Nav1 (CgNav1) and a Nav2 (CgNav2) with sequence properties of sodium-selective and sodium/calcium-selective channels, respectively. Three alternative splice transcripts of CgNav1 named A, B and C, were characterized. The expression

Leiomodin 2 (Lmod2) is an actin-binding protein that has been implicated in the regulation of striated muscle thin filament assembly; its physiological function has yet to be studied. We found that knockout of Lmod2 in mice results in abnormally short thin filaments in the heart. We also discovered that Lmod2 functions to elongate thin filaments by promoting actin assembly and dynamics at thin filament pointed ends. Lmod2-KO mice die as juveniles with hearts displaying contractile dysfunction and ventricular chamber enlargement consistent with dilated cardiomyopathy. Lmod2-null cardiomyocytes

Tissue samples from nine red foxes (four samples of striated muscle tissue and five samples of heart tissue) that originated from the Michalovce district (Slovakia), an area with endemic occurrence of canine babesiosis were examined by PCR method using primers amplifying a fragment of the 18S rRNA spanning the V4 region of Babesia and Theileria. An unexpected determination of 450 bp DNA fragment of Hepatozoon canis was found in four samples. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene from the H. canis showed 100% similarity with the sequence from Brasil isolate of H. canis from a pampas fox (Pseud

Somites are sequentially formed, metameric units of the paraxial mesoderm of vertebrate embryos. They are the most obvious correlative of the segmental patterning along the cranio-caudal axis and transfer segmentation to other tissues such as the spinal nerves and dorsal aortic branches. Furthermore, somites are the source of numerous mesodermal cell types such as smooth and striated muscle, cartilage and tendon cells, and soft connective tissue. They also give rise to endothelial cells. Here we focus on the finding that two lineages of endothelial cells, blood vascular endothelial cells and l

We evaluated the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and therapeutical aspects of 41 patients with thymomatous myasthenia gravis. Thirty five patients (85.36%) were submitted to thymectomy. Follow-up ranged from two to 18 years. Diagnosis of thymoma was based upon clinical investigations and CT scan of the anterior mediastinum and in 11 patients supported by immunological tests of anti-striated muscle antibodies with a positive result in more than 80% of cases. Histopathologic examination of all thymomectomized patients confirmed the diagnosis of thymoma. There was a significant predominance

A type I congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) in the left lower lobe was removed from a 11-year-old boy with a 3-month history of recurrent pneumonia. As incidental finding, a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) was found in the lung parenchyma adjacent to the cyst. A left lower lobectomy was performed. At 18 months after surgery the patient is well and free of neoplastic disease. To the best of our knowledge, this association has not been reported previously in a pediatric patient. Malignancies complicating CCAM are rarely seen, but have been reported in adults. Including our case

We established a xenograft line of human teratocarcinoma (TC-1) and characterized the pluripotency of differentiation of the neoplastic cells. A teratocarcinoma specimen obtained from a primary mediastinal lesion (22-year-old male patient) was inoculated subcutaneously into severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice. The carcinoma formed tumors in the mice. We established a xenograft line by serial passage of the tumor in vivo. The primary tumor was composed of papillary and pseudoglandular nests of highly atypical epithelial cells with foci of glomeruloid structures. The metastatic cells sho

Thirty-four pineals of 18-month-old rats were studied, of which 12 belonged to animals exposed to 7% and 13 to a group exposed to 10% oxygen in breathing gas. Nine pineals were from controls kept under normoxic conditions. For comparison 2 pineals of 6-week-old rats were also examined. No influence of hypoxia on histology of the pineal gland can be stated. In this the pineal behaves like other parts of the rat brain, which in previous experiments has been shown to adapt well to low-oxygen concentrations. Also no important difference between pineals of young and advanced aged rats were found by

Few studies have examined the vagal afferent innervation of the esophagus in naturally occurring esophageal motility disorders. The present study assessed the integrity of distension-sensitive vagal afferents innervating the esophagus in naturally occurring canine megaesophagus. In the dog, esophageal distension induces reflex inhibition of crural diaphragm electromyographic activity that is mediated by vagal afferents innervating esophageal mechanoreceptors. This reflex was measured during stepwise esophageal distension in six dogs with congenital idiopathic megaesophagus, two dogs with megae

Spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1 is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive weakness and atrophy of the diaphragm and skeletal muscles, leading to death in childhood. No effective treatment is available. The neuromuscular degeneration (Nmd(2J)) mouse shares a crucial mutation in the immunoglobulin mu-binding protein 2 gene (Ighmbp2) with spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1 patients and also displays some basic features of the human disease. This model serves as a promising tool in understanding the complex mechanisms of the disease and

Introduction: Severe acute global cerebral hypoxia can lead to significant disability in humans. Although different animal models have been described to study hypoxia, there is no endogenous model that considers hypoxia and its effect on the brain as an independent factor. Thus, we developed a minimally invasive rat model, which is based on the non-depolarizing muscle blocking agent rocuronium in anesthetized animals. This drug causes respiratory insufficiency by paralysis of the striated muscles. Methods: In this study, 14 rats underwent 12 min of hypoxemia with an oxygen saturation of approx
