Optimal Strategies for Screening Common Birth Defects in Children of Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anomalies are one of the major causes of the global burden of diseases, and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately affected. This review assesses the prenatal and postnatal screening methods and compares the prevalence of major congenital anomalies in LMICs. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane databases of systematic reviews, clinical trials.gov for relevant studies using Medical Subject Headings and keywords. We categorized the studies into different systems and screening methods depending on the

Painful clicking jaw: a pictorial review of internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint.

Temporomandibular joint disorders are a common cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain worldwide. Among these, internal disc derangement is the most frequent type of disorder. Internal derangement is defined as an abnormal positional and functional relationship between the disc and articulating surfaces. Common clinical symptoms include pain and clicking. Imaging plays a key role in diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorders. It is important for the radiologist to detect early imaging signs of internal derangement, thereby avoiding the evolution of this condition to degenerative joint disease.

Mastocytosis as an unusual cause of hip fracture in an elderly woman.

Mastocytosis is a type of myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by accumulation and proliferation of morphologically and immunophenotypically abnormal mast cells in 1 or more organ systems. Clinical manifestations vary depending upon the organ involved and chemical mediators released by mast cells along with constitutional symptoms and musculoskeletal complaints. We report a case of isolated bone marrow mastocytosis in an 87-year-old woman who presented with a fall resulting in proximal femur fracture. Bone marrow biopsy revealed mastocytosis, and no evidence of systemic involvement or per

Ultrasound imaging of non-traumatic lesions of wrist and hand tendons.

Non-traumatic tendon lesions are common and diverse at the wrist and hand. Improvements in high-resolution ultrasound (US) are producing increasingly high-quality images of superficial structures, thus expanding the indications for this imaging modality as a tool for investigating musculoskeletal disorders. The objective of this work is to provide an update on the uses and performance of US in non-traumatic tendon disorders of the wrist and hand. The relevant anatomy is reviewed, and the normal and abnormal ultrasound scan features are described in detail, with attention not only to the tendon

Drug-induced metabolic bone disorders.

A number of drugs, either physician prescribed or those taken without the knowledge of the physician, may have metabolic effects on, and result in abnormal changes in, the musculoskeletal system. These medications may involve the developing fetus, infant, child, or adult and may manifest as drug-induced embryopathies, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, or rickets, or a combination of these, or they may be associated with proliferative changes. Not uncommonly, the radiologist may be the first physician to identify the metabolic manifestations of these medications. The radiological changes associated w

Phenotypic features of genetically modified DMD-XKOXWT pigs.

INTRODUCTION: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a hereditary neuromuscular disorder caused by mutation in the dystrophin gene (DMD) on the X chromosome. Female DMD carriers occasionally exhibit symptoms such as muscle weakness and heart failure. Here, we investigated the characteristics and representativeness of female DMD carrier (DMD-XKOXWT) pigs as a suitable disease model. METHODS: In vitro fertilization using sperm from a DMD-XKOY↔XWTXWT chimeric boar yielded DMD-XKOXWT females, which were used to generate F2 and F3 progeny, including DMD-XKOXWT females. F1-F3 piglets were genotyped a

Systematic ophthalmologic evaluation in cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome: A genotype-endophenotype correlation.

Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome (CFCS) is a rare genetic disorder belonging to the RASopathies, a group of developmental syndromes caused by upregulated RAS/MAPK signaling. Pathogenic variants affecting four genes, KRAS, BRAF, MAP2K1 and MAP2K2, encoding core signal transducers of the pathway, underlie the condition. Major clinical features include a distinctive facies, ectodermal and cardiac anomalies, reduced postnatal growth, intellectual disability, and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Similar to other RASopathies, reports of visual impairment, high refractive error, optic nerve pallor, and …

Complex Anatomic Abnormalities of the Lower Leg Muscles and Tendons Associated With Phocomelia: A Case Report.

Musculoskeletal anatomy is widely known to have components that stray from the norm in the form of variant muscle and tendon presence, absence, origin, insertion, and bifurcation. Although these variant muscles and tendons might be deemed incidental and insignificant findings by most, they can be important contributors to pathologic physiology or, more importantly, an option for effective treatment. In the present case report, we describe a patient with phocomelia and Müllerian abnormalities secondary to in utero thalidomide exposure. The patient had experienced recurrent bilateral foot pain a

Differences in active range of motion measurements in the upper extremity of patients with writer's cramp compared with healthy controls.

STUDY DESIGN: Exploratory case-control study. INTRODUCTION: Writer's cramp (WC) is a type of focal hand dystonia. The central nervous system plays a role in its pathophysiology, but abnormalities in the affected musculoskeletal components may also be relevant. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We compared the active range of motion (ROM) in patients with WC and healthy volunteers (HVs) and correlated the findings with disease duration and severity. METHODS: Affected limb joints were measured with goniometers. Patients were assessed at least 3 months after their last botulinum toxin (botulinum neurotoxi

Cosegregation of elastin-associated microfibrillar abnormalities with the Marfan phenotype in families.

The Marfan syndrome is a serious heritable connective-tissue disorder characterized primarily by ocular, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal abnormalities but also involving multiple other tissues and organs of the body. Inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder, the etiology and pathogenesis of the Marfan syndrome are presently unknown. We have documented consistent apparent deficient content of elastin-associated microfibrillar fibers by indirect immunofluorescent (IF) studies of Marfan skin, as well as deficient accumulation of related fibrous materials in cultures of Marfan fibroblasts a…

Homozygous frameshift mutation in TMCO1 causes a syndrome with craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies, and mental retardation.

We identified an autosomal recessive condition in 11 individuals in the Old Order Amish of northeastern Ohio. The syndrome was characterized by distinctive craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies, and mental retardation. The typical craniofacial dysmorphism included brachycephaly, highly arched bushy eyebrows, synophrys, long eyelashes, low-set ears, microdontism of primary teeth, and generalized gingival hyperplasia, whereas Sprengel deformity of scapula, fusion of spine, rib abnormities, pectus excavatum, and pes planus represented skeletal anomalies. The genome-wide homozygosity mappin

Ultrasound-Guided Pharmacopuncture for Lateral Epicondylitis Initially Misdiagnosed Due to Incomplete Common Extensor Tendon Evaluation: a case report.

Lateral epicondylitis is a common musculoskeletal condition caused by repetitive strain, most frequently affecting the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle. Although musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a valuable diagnostic tool, limited scanning of the common extensor tendon (CET) might result in missed diagnoses. Therefore, accurate evaluation requires a comprehensive assessment of both superficial and deep tendon fibers. A 45-year-old woman presented with persistent right lateral elbow pain that has worsened over eight weeks. Initial ultrasonography performed at an orthopedic clinic

Measurement of Three-Dimensional Back Shape of Normal Adults Using a Novel Three-Dimensional Imaging Mobile Surface Topography System (MSTS): An Intra- and Inter-Rater Reliability Study.

Postural and spinal deformities are major contributing factors to musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Posture screening and assessment can help to identify early morphological deformities, thereby preventing progression and reducing or correcting them with effective treatments. The study evaluates both intra- and inter-repeatability of using a mobile structured light sensor with a structured light pattern for building an accurate 3D human model and its use in postural screening. 16 young males (age: 25 ± 5.6 years, height: 172 ± 5.3 cm, mass: 69 ± 8.6 kg) participated without any musculoskeletal

Epidemiological investigation and ultrasonic diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in Chinese infants: A large multi-center cohort study.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is common among Chinese infants, but a lack of large-scale, multi-center epidemiological studies has made it difficult to characterize the risk factors associated with this disease. This multi-center cohort study included 19,833 Chinese infants aged 14 days to 6 months. A multi-center ultrasound protocol was used to diagnose hip abnormalities, and epidemiological data of the infants were collected through questionnaires. Categorical variables were expressed as percentages and compared using χ2 test. Multivariate analysis was performed through logistic re

Screening for spondyloarthritis in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) can be associated with various musculoskeletal (IBD-MSK) manifestations that could be difficult to classify for gastroenterologists. We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patients with IBD-MSK and the prevalence of spondyloarthritis (SpA). In this observational cross-sectional study, we included patients with IBD-MSK complaints (peripheral or back pain). All patients underwent a standardized rheumatology evaluation including clinical, biological and imaging evaluations (MRI of spine and sacroiliac joints and ultrasonography of enthesis). We included 183
