[Clinical judgment and decision making in clinical practice. A music conductor with epilepsy followed by memory disorders].

A 40-year-old conductor was admitted because of increasing drowsiness and confusion. Two years before admission he had had a first seizure. One year before admission he had a generalized convulsive status epilepticus; the following months he was less able to concentrate. A second status epilepticus was followed by transient weakness of his left arm and a depressed level of consciousness for several weeks. After awakening, he had delusions, and his wife found him demented. In the following months his confusion and drowsiness gradually deteriorated. He had previously had gonorrhoea, an episode o

Music listening preferences and preadmission dysfunctional psychosocial behaviors of adolescents hospitalized on an in-patient psychiatric unit.

This study investigated the relationship between music listening preferences and preadmission, dysfunctional psychosocial behaviors (PDPB) of 60 adolescents who were hospitalized on an in-patient psychiatric unit. Findings were that hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to music with negative lyrics/themes had a history of more PDPB than hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to music that did not contain negative lyrics/themes; and hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to heavy metal music had a history of more PDPB than hospitalized adolescents who primarily list…

[Acute dysfunction of mitral bioprosthesis: Doppler expression of a musical holosystolic murmur. Apropos of 2 cases].

Two women who had been fitted with a porcine mitral valve seven years previously suddenly developed acute dysfunction of the bioprosthesis with regurgitation. In both patients physical examination revealed an intense, vibrating, musical holosystolic murmur sounding like a "goose cry" and located at the apex. Pulsed doppler showed major, jet-like, central orothetic mitral regurgitation. A harmonic graph was recorded when the doppler window was positioned upstream of the porcine valve leaflets. The finding of such a doppler signal in this clinical context suggests tearing or perforation of one c…

Fostering collaborative creativity and ensemble skills through virtual ensembles in hybrid music education: A systematic literature review.

The sudden change of music education to a hybrid form during the COVID-19 pandemic has made virtual ensembles the primary way of learning together. The authors aim through this review to understand how much digital platforms such as JackTrip, Jamulus, Zoom, and Soundtrap have affected the student engagement in musical ensemble practice. The paper emphasizes virtually choreographed concerts not only as a method for being able to continue training when difficulties arise but also to develop creative cooperation, self-management, and more advanced group playing skills. Seventeen peer-reviewed art…

The effectiveness of music-based sensory activation solutions (SAS) method in patients with treatment-resistant nocturnal enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: Although nocturnal enuresis is a somatically benign condition, it can pose long-term psychosocial risks if left untreated. Treatment efforts continue, particularly for treatment-resistant nocturnal enuresis. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of music-based sensory activation solutions (SAS) in treating enuresis in patients who have not responded to treatment options listed in guidelines. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, patients aged 6-17 years who were referred from departments other than the child psychiatry outpatient clinic with complaints of nocturnal enur…

Accompaniment of music in physical exercise moderates the relationship between objective cardiac signals and enhanced interoceptive accuracy.

Physical exercise and music are two widely practiced activities that significantly contribute to mental health. Interoceptive accuracy (IAcc), the ability to perceive internal bodily states precisely, plays a fundamental role in health. However, it remains unclear whether physical exercise and its combination with music influenced IAcc differently. This study investigated how acute physical exercise, both with and without music, affects IAcc. The results showed improved IAcc after 35 min of running, regardless of music accompaniment. Furthermore, the enhancement of IAcc was associated with low…

Can music activity training improve self-control among preschool children? Evidence from an 8-week intervention experiment.

BACKGROUND: Self-control is crucial for healthy individual development and environmental adaptation, with the preschool period being a critical stage for its emergence. This study aimed to examine the effects of music activity interventions on self-control among 4- to 5-year-old preschool children. METHODS: In a 3×2 mixed experimental design, 67 children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a percussion intervention group (n = 20), an integrated music intervention group (n = 20), or a control group (n = 27). The intervention groups underwent an 8-week music teaching intervention with…

Structured Light Music for Stress Adaptation: The BDNF/TrkB Signaling Axis Mediating Neuroplasticity and HPA Axis Regulation.

Background/Objectives: Chronic stress poses a major threat to animal health and welfare, yet current interventions are often invasive, poorly compliant, or lack long-term feasibility. This narrative review synthesizes preclinical mechanistic evidence from mammalian animal models to examine how structured auditory stimulation engages neurotrophic signaling. Structured light music-an auditory stimulus with defined acoustic parameters (e.g., tempo, intensity, and spectral frequency)-has emerged as a promising non-invasive strategy for promoting stress adaptation. However, the molecular mechanism …

Shared Transcriptomic and Epigenomic Signatures Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Music Exposure: An Integrative Proof of Concept.

Music-based interventions have shown promise in aiding recovery in individuals with brain damage (BD), including acquired and traumatic brain injury (ABI and TBI). To investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms, we conducted a study integrating transcriptomic and epigenomic data. We compared gene expression changes driven by musical stimuli in healthy individuals exposed to music with transcriptomic data from TBI patients, identifying 154 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) affected in TBI and impacted by music, including STK35, HNRNPA0. These genes are notably involved in synapti…

What plays beneath: mental health burden, personal resources, and treatment utilization among professional musicians and music students.

INTRODUCTION: Professional musicians may be exposed to distinctive occupational, psychosocial, and artistic demands, yet integrated evidence on their mental health, psychological resources, and treatment utilization remains scarce. Therefore, this study examined mental health indicators, including symptom burden and self-reported diagnosed mental disorders, personal psychological resources (resilience, self-efficacy, and self-esteem), occupational characteristics, and treatment use in a nationwide sample of professional musicians and music students in Germany. METHODS: Data were collected thr…

Efficacy of Music Therapy in Reducing Anxiety Among Postsurgical Cancer Patients: An Open-Label Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is one of the key therapeutic modalities for cancers such as breast and colon cancer. Researchers claim that poorly managed anxiety slows recovery in postsurgical cancer patients and requires proactive management, including mind-body therapies like music therapy, which may further help reduce opioid consumption. In this study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of music therapy in reducing anxiety, depression, stress, and pain among postsurgical cancer patients over two weeks. METHODS: This was a randomized, open-label parallel design trial with a sample size of 44 participan…

Effect of Music Therapy on Pain During Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy; A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution ultrasonography devices have led to the increased detection of thyroid nodules and the need for fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). However, FNAB is an invasive procedure that can cause discomfort and pain. Music therapy has been used for centuries to alleviate pain, and our clinical trial was conducted to investigate its impact on pain scores during thyroid FNAB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled clinical trial, including adult patients undergoing thyroid FNAB. We evaluated the nonpharmacological intervention of listening to music be…

Combining visual cues with relaxing music, perfume and ventilation to reduce passenger car sickness: An experimental study.

The autonomous, digital, and electric transformation of passenger vehicles is projected to elevate the incidence of motion sickness among occupants. This study investigates the effectiveness of an "anti-motion sickness" system that features dynamic light stimuli to support visual perception of longitudinal motion, combined with relaxing music, perfume and ventilation pulses to enhance user wellbeing. In an experimental design aimed at replicating a realistic passenger drive, fifty-three subjects were tested as front passengers engaged in a gaming activity. Subjective motion sickness ratings we…
