Sellar metastasis from clear cell sarcoma: Description of the first case.

Metastases to the sellar region and pituitary gland are rare and usually occur in advanced cancers, commonly breast and lung adenocarcinomas. Metastases from sarcomas to the pituitary gland are extremely rare. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old man who had undergone surgery and radiotherapy for a clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of the knee at age of 42. The patient underwent resection of 2 distinct metastatic lung nodules 9 years later. During follow-up, he developed a persistent headache and diabetes insipidus. MRI revealed a sellar and suprasellar lesion, which was removed with an endoscopic

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the palate with isolated cutaneous metastasis: a unique case and review of current and future treatment modalities of metastatic disease.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an aggressive salivary gland neoplasm characterized by high rates of local recurrence, early metastasis, and a poor long-term prognosis. Approximately 20-50% of cases result in distant metastasis, commonly involving the lung, bone, liver, and brain. Cutaneous metastasis is a rare occurrence, with a small number of cases reported previously in the context of multiple metastatic sites of involvement. We present a unique case of ACC of the hard palate with isolated cutaneous metastasis. A 36-year-old woman underwent a subtotal maxillectomy and skull base resectio

Heterotopic Cutaneous Meningioma: An Unusual Presentation Occurring in a Patient With a Remote History of Intracranial Meningioma.

Meningioma is a neoplasm of the meninges, which usually occurs in intracranial sites. Extracranial meningioma has been frequently reported in the sinonasal tract and skull bone, often as extension of intracranial meningiomas. Isolated heterotopic meningioma without contiguous intracranial lesion is extremely rare. A 56-year-old woman presented in December 2015 with 2 firm subcutaneous scalp masses; one in the left lateral (temporal) and the other in the left superior (parietal) region. The clinical impression was that of lipoma. Pathologic examination revealed an ill-defined proliferation of u

Oligosecretory Myeloma With Amyloidosis and Alopecia.

Amyloidosis is a systemic illness characterized by the extracellular deposition of abnormal proteins in body tissues and organs. In addition to renal involvement, amyloidosis can also present with a variety of skin manifestations, though rarely with alopecia. Sixteen cases of alopecia secondary to systemic amyloidosis are reported. There is one reported case that presented with alopecia universalis. We report a case of a 68-year-old woman presenting with alopecia universalis, rapid decline in kidney function, and nephrotic syndrome who was found to have multiple myeloma-associated AL amyloidos

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the spleen in an adult: an initial case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare locally aggressive vascular neoplasm characterized by infiltrating nodules and sheets of spindle cells, and unmistakable resemblance to Kaposi's sarcoma. KHE occurs mainly in newborns and infants and presents most commonly in the skin, deep soft tissue, and bone. We report a case of KHE in a 36-year-old female who presented with a spleen mass and underwent splenectomy. Macroscopic examination revealed a large, dark-red, firm mass in the spleen. Histologically, the tumor consisted of irregular, infiltrating nodules of densely packed spindle-shaped

Aggressive pregnancy tumor mimicking a malignant neoplasm: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to present the management of an aggressive, highly proliferative pregnancy tumor with clinical and radiographic characteristics highly suggestive of a malignant neoplasm. BACKGROUND: Pregnancy tumor is a benign hyperplastic gingival lesion occurring during pregnancy that is indistinguishable from a pyogenic granuloma arising in nonpregnant females, or in males. The lesion usually grows over a few months and tends to bleed. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28-year-old woman at four months of gestation was referred for a massive gingival swelling (5.5 cm in greatest diameter)

Primary duodenal low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma presenting with outlet obstruction.

Low-grade lymphoma arising in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) of the duodenum represents a very rare neoplasm. We report an unusual presentation of primary duodenal MALT lymphoma in a 78-year-old man. The patient initially presented with a suspected pulmonary embolus and was anticoagulated, which precipitated a major gastrointestinal hemorrhage. A large atypical ulcer with narrowing of the duodenum beyond the bulb was seen on endoscopy. Biopsies revealed atypical lymphoid cells. Abdominal CT scan revealed a mass in either the duodenum or head of the pancreas. An endoscopic retrograde

Lymphoma of the breast. A clinicopathologic study of primary and secondary cases.

BACKGROUND: Primary lymphomas of the breast are rare, accounting for 1.7% to 2.2% of extranodal lymphomas and 0.38% to 0.7% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Although secondary breast lymphomas are also rare, they represent the largest group of metastatic tumors of the breast. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic characteristics of breast lymphomas, the relative frequency of primary and secondary mammary lymphomas, and in selected cases, the role of gene rearrangement analysis in diagnosis and staging of these lymphomas. RESULTS: We conducted a retrospective revi

Role of Chitinase 3-like-1 in Myelofibrosis via Fibroblast-Produced Extracellular Matrix Enhancement.

Cluster of differentiation 14+ monocytes produced spindle-shaped fibrocytes, similar to fibroblasts. Recent studies have reported that fibrocytes are crucial for the development and progression of primary myelofibrosis (MF); however, their functional role remains unclear. We compared monocytes and fibrocytes using RNA sequencing for gene expression profiles. We focused on chitinase 3-like-1 (CHI3L1), which causes inflammation, organ fibrosis, and extracellular tissue remodeling. We found higher CHI3L1 levels in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm with MF than in those without MF. Further

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the tibial nerve: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) are rare plasma cell tumors forming outside the bone marrow. EMPs spread to soft tissues with a predilection for the head and neck region. Therefore, EMPs are rarely included in the differential for peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs). The authors discuss a case of tibial nerve sheath invasion by an EMP in the context of multiple myeloma (MM). OBSERVATIONS: A 70-year-old female with MM presented with right leg pain and a suspected PNST of the tibial nerve. Imaging revealed a T1-hypointense lesion in the popliteal fossa. Resection was attempte

Primary Prostatic Carcinoma with Metastasis to Epaxial Muscles and Myocardium in a Dog.

Canine prostatic carcinoma is a highly aggressive neoplasm with a strong tendency to metastasize, most commonly to regional lymph nodes, lungs, and bones. However, skeletal muscle and myocardial involvement are rarely reported. This report describes an 11-year-old intact male Maltese dog with a two-month history of anorexia and lethargy, referred for further evaluation after failing to respond to piroxicam therapy. Diagnostic imaging revealed a prostatic mass and multiple rim-enhancing lesions in the epaxial musculature and left ventricular wall, without evidence of metastasis to the lymph nod

CLINICAL CASE OF NON-TYPICAL METASTASIS OF NEUROENDOCRINE LUNG CARCINOMA TO THE VASCULAR MEMBRANE OF THE EYE.

BACKGROUND: Metastases in eye structures are rare (1-5% cases at systemic spread of different malignancies, mainly breast and lung cancers). The prognosis is poor. The overall survival usually does not exceed 12 or even 6 months. If metastases are found in the choroid membrane, the probability that the patient has multiple metastatic lesions of other organs increases significantly. Lung neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare (1-2% of all malignancies in adults), but mainly aggressive tumors. They are cha-racterized by "blurred", nonspecific clinical symptoms, the correct diagnosis is delayed seriou

Lethal, malignant, metastatic struma ovarii.

BACKGROUND: Struma ovarii (SO) is extremely rare, with less than 200 reported cases in the medical literature. SO is defined by the presence of an ovarian tumor containing thyroid tissue as the predominant cell type. Malignant transformation is rare and lethal cases of SO are even rarer. We report on a patient presenting with left ovarian cystic SO and lethal outcome. SUMMARY: A 45-year-old woman was diagnosed with a follicular variant of papillary carcinoma on laparotomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy. She had persistently elevated serum thyroglobulin following total thyroidectomy + radioiod

An in vivo/in vitro model to assess endocrine disrupting activity of xenoestrogens in uterine leiomyoma.

Xenoestrogens with endocrine disrupting activity have been associated with the dysregulation of reproductive function and promotion of malignancies in experimental animals and human populations. The high incidence of uterine leiomyomas, a benign estrogen-responsive neoplasm of the uterine myometrium, calls into question the potential influence of xenoestrogens in the pathogenesis of these tumors. An in vivo/in vitro animal model, the Eker rat, that can be used to assess the estrogen-like agonist activity of potential endocrine disruptors in the uterine myometrium is discussed. Using this model

Dental hygiene screening reveals childhood neck mass.

A benign neck mass was discovered in a young child which, based on presentation, was diagnosed as a thyroglossal duct cyst. Thyroglossal duct cysts normally appear in childhood and are usually asymptomatic. They are a congenital neoplasm resulting from incomplete resorption of the thyroglossal duct following the embryonic descent of the thyroid gland and are often found attached to the hyoid bone. They may or may not have exterior fistulae and are slow growing. Other types of neck masses should be included in a complete differential diagnosis, as this case verified. Masses such as the dermoid

Primary intraoral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma presenting in childhood: review of the literature and case report.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is a recently described vascular neoplasm of borderline or intermediate malignant potential. This tumor arises from medium- to large-sized vessels, primarily involves the soft tissues of the extremities as well as the liver and lung, and rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Only eight well-documented cases of intraoral EH have been reported. We present an additional pediatric case of EH confined to the oral cavity and review the literature regarding EH presenting as an intraoral mass. EH is characterized histopathologically as an epithelioid lesion a

Lymphoblastic lymphoma in a colony of N:NIH(S)-bg-nu-xid mice.

During a 1-year period, 28 animals from a breeding colony of N:NIH(S)-bg-nu-xid mice were discovered to have rapidly enlarging subcutaneous swellings in the ventral, cervical, and axillary regions. Five of the mice also had hind limb paresis. Twenty-two of the mice were heterozygous nude females, five were homozygous nude males, and one was a homozygous nude female. All of the above mice were homo- or hemizygous for the beige and X-linked immunodeficiency mutations. The average age of the mice was 8.3 months. Generalized enlargement of the peripheral and internal lymph nodes was present at the

Distal tibial fractures are a poorly recognised complication with fibula free flaps.

The fibula free flap is ideal for complex jaw reconstructions, with low reported donor and flap morbidity. We discuss a distal tibial stress fracture two months following a vascularised fibula free flap procedure. Despite being an unrecognised complication, a literature review produced 13 previous cases; only two were reported in the reconstructive surgery literature, with the most recent claiming to be the first. The majority of these studies treated this fracture non-operatively; none reported their patient follow-up. Each case presented with ipsilateral leg pain, which has been cited as an

Biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of variously molecular sized 117mSn(II)-polyethyleneiminomethyl phosphonate complexes in the normal primate model as potential selective therapeutic bone agents.

In the search for a cure for metastatic bone cancer, 117mSn with its conversion electrons and low energy photons both of discrete energies shows little bone marrow toxicity, providing the opportunity to increase the administered dose. Selective accumulation in lesions would capitalise on this advantage. The 10-30 kDa fraction of the water-soluble polymer polyethyleneimine, functionalised with methyl phosphonate groups (PEI-MP) and labelled with 99mTc, has shown selective uptake into bone tumours. Furthermore using speciation calculations it was predicted that the Sn(II)-PEI-MP complex would re

18F-NaF PET/CT in Extensive Melorheostosis of the Axial and Appendicular Skeleton With Soft-Tissue Involvement.

Melorheostosis is a rare, nonhereditary, benign, sclerotic bone dysplasia with no sex predilection, typically occurring in late childhood or early adulthood, which can lead to substantial functional morbidity, depending on the sites of involvement. We report on a patient with extensive melorheostosis in the axial and appendicular skeleton, as well as in the soft tissues, who was evaluated with whole-body F-NaF PET/CT scan. All melorheostotic lesions of the skeleton and of the ossified soft-tissue masses demonstrated intensely increased F-NaF activity, suggesting the application of this modalit
