Enucleation of recurrent central odontogenic fibroma and bone regeneration of the osseous defect with enamel matrix derivative and bone allograft: Case report with 5-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic fibroma is a rare benign neoplasm of mature fibrous connective tissue with variable amounts of inactive-looking odontogenic epithelium. Few recurrences of central odontogenic fibroma (COF) have been reported in the literature. This manuscript reports the enucleation of a recurrent COF and bone regeneration of the osseous defect with enamel matrix derivative and bone allograft. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Asian female presented in 2015 with a palatal depression between #10 and 11. The patient previously had an odontogenic fibroma between #10 and 11 removed in 200

Diagnostic performance of 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT in tumor-induced osteomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is caused by typically small tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). As tumor resection is the only effective treatment for TIO, it is important to detect the culprit tumor. We aimed to assess the utility of 68Gallium-DOTA-D-Phe(1)-Tyr(3)-octreotide (68Ga-DOTATOC) PET/CT in TIO and the correlation between biochemical parameters and the PET/CT results. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with clinically suspected TIO who had undergone 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT were retrospectively analyzed. 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT results were compared with biochemi

Role of (myo)fibroblasts in the development of vascular and connective tissue structure of the C38 colorectal cancer in mice.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear if the vascular and connective tissue structures of primary and metastatic tumors are intrinsically determined or whether these characteristics are defined by the host tissue. Therefore we examined the microanatomical steps of vasculature and connective tissue development of C38 colon carcinoma in different tissues. METHODS: Tumors produced in mice at five different locations (the cecal wall, skin, liver, lung, and brain) were analyzed using fluorescent immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: We f

Quantitative ELISA-Like Immunohistochemistry of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 in Diagnosis of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia and Clinical Characteristics of the Disease.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare acquired paraneoplastic disorder and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) plays a key role in its pathogenesis. This study was conducted to describe a novel FGF23 detecting procedure and describe clinical features of the disease. Fourteen TIO cases were retrieved and FGF23 expression was measured by quantitative ELISA-like immunohistochemistry using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues. As summarized from 14 TIO cases, clinical features of TIO were long-standing history of osteomalacia, hypophosphatemia, and urinary phosphate wasting. The assoc

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the kidney.

The kidney is a readily accessible organ to the ultrasonographer. In the past several years, improvements in instrumentation have allowed detailed visualization of the normal renal architecture as well as disease processes involving the kidney. Ultrasonographic evaluation should be considered a complementary modality to the intravenous pyelogram, and in cases where contrast material is contraindicated, it may become a primary imaging technique of the kidneys. The indications for a renal ultrasonic examination, techniques, and methods of imaging the kidney as well as normal anatomy will be pres

Association between antihypertensive drugs and cancer risk: evidence from a population-based study in the Abruzzo region, Southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the relationship between the use of antihypertensive medications and the risk of developing cancer has been examined yielding heterogeneous results. Using routinely administrative regional healthcare databases from the Abruzzo Region (in Southern Italy), a retrospective cohort study between the years 2017–2024 was conducted investigating the relationship between the use of antihypertensive drugs and the risk of cancer occurrence, by a descriptive-population based approach. METHODS: All Regional Health Service beneficiaries without a cancer diagnosis in the two prec

Complications of Paget's disease of bone.

This paper describes the diverse complications of Paget's osteopathy. Lesions arising from changes in the bone per se, those due to secondary anatomical changes, and metabolic abnormalities, are discussed in relation to their presentation, frequency, and severity. Important complications involving the skeletal structures and nervous system are described. Sarcomatous change in the abnormal bone remains the most serious lesion. Some changes recognised for decades, such as high output heart failure, are very rare. Other less-well-recognised features, including hyperuricaemia, may be common enough

Mammographic density: intersection of science, the law, and clinical practice.

High mammographic density is associated with a two- to sixfold increased risk of breast cancer. Mammographic density can be altered by endogenous and exogenous hormonal factors and generally declines with age. Mammographic density is affected by confounding factors such as age, parity, menopausal status, and body mass index (BMI), thus making interpretation of mammographic density challenging. None of the established means of measuring mammographic density are entirely satisfactory because they are time consuming and/or subjective. Although mammographic density has been shown to predict breast

Atypical Fibroxanthoma: A case series and review of literature.

INTRO/OBJECTIVE: Atypical Fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm arising from myofibroblast or fibroblast-like cells that predominantly affects the head and neck region. It commonly mimics more invasive neoplasms and is a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. The aim of this study was to develop a better understanding of AFX, focusing on recent developments in diagnosis and management. METHODS: A retrospective case series and review of recent literature were carried out. RESULTS: Over a 17-year period, seven cases were identified (six male, mean age at presentation was 75.9 years). Pneumoconiosis and associated medical conditions.

Hospital discharge data from Michigan for the years 1990 and 1991 were used to examine potential associations between pneumoconiosis and pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, obstructive lung disease, and connective tissue disease among both men and women. Lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and obstructive lung disease were associated with coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Pulmonary hypertension and obstructive lung disease were associated with asbestosis and silicosis. Rheumatoid arthritis was associated with silicosis. The potential is suggested that misdiagnosis is the cause of the association

Activation of cancer-associated fibroblasts is required for tumor neovascularization in a murine model of melanoma.

Metastatic melanoma is highly fatal. Within the tumor microenvironment, the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in melanoma metastasis and progression is relatively understudied. The matricellular protein CCN2 (formerly termed connective tissue growth factor, CTGF) is overexpressed, in a fashion independent of BRAF mutational status, by CAFs in melanoma. Herein, we find, in human melanoma patients, that CCN2 expression negatively correlates with survival and positively correlates with expression of neovascularization markers. To assess the role of CAFs in melanoma progression, we used

The phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor: why is definitive diagnosis and curative surgery often delayed?

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a paraneoplastic syndrome resulting in renal phosphate wasting and decreased bone mineralization. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors represent a rare etiology of tumor-induced osteomalacia. Nonspecific symptoms of fatigue, bone pain, and musculoskeletal weakness make the diagnosis elusive and lead to a delay in surgical treatment. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In this case series, the following three questions were asked: (1) How do the clinical presentation and features of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors delay the diagnosis? (2) What is the clinical course after

CD25 is expressed by canine cutaneous mast cell tumors but not by cutaneous connective tissue mast cells.

Canine cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCT) of different histological grades have distinct biological behaviors. However, little is known about underlying molecular mechanisms that lead to tumor development and increasing malignancy with higher tumor grade. Recent studies have identified the interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) subunits CD25 and CD2 as markers that distinguish nonneoplastic from neoplastic mast cells in human systemic mastocytosis. In this study, their potential as a marker for canine MCT and their possible impact on MCT carcinogenesis were evaluated. mRNA expression levels of both gene
