We investigated antitumor effects of the following four extracts of freeze-dried Hericium erinaceus mushrooms in Balb/c mice intracutaneously transplanted on the backs with CT-26 colon cancer cells: HWE, hot water extraction by boiling in water for 3 h; MWE, microwaving in 50% ethanol/water at 60 W for 3 min; and ACE and AKE, boiling in 1% HCl or 3% NaOH for 2 h. This study describes histopathological findings in 26 nonhuman primates (cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys) with liver tumors after dosing with IQ for time periods of 27 to 72 months. In most of the cases 2-5 well-defined tumor nodules were present in the liver at the time of autopsy. In 5 cases there were numerous nodules occupying most of the liver. Intrahepatic vascular invasion was observed in 14 cases, and lung metastases in 6 cases. Humoral antitumor response of Lewis lung tumor-bearing mice was measured by humoral leukocyte adherence inhibition (H-LAI) test. The reactivity of serum against tumor antigens prepared from primary tumor and lung metastases could be revealed at the first day after injection of tumor cells. Tumoricidal activity of Soviet-synthesized oxoplatinum and cycloplatam was shown to influence human tumor strains (melanoma, cancer of the kidney, Burkitt's lymphoma) transplanted to nude mice. Their therapeutic effect was associated with lymphopenia; however, they did not suppress the chemically determined activity of succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase.

Three propellant chlorofluorocarbons, namely trichlorofluoromethane (FC11), dichlorodifluoromethane (FC12), and chlorodifluoromethane (FC22) were administered by inhalation at a concentration of 5000, 1000 and 0 ppm, 4 hours daily, 5 days weekly, for 104 and 78 weeks, to rats and mice, respectively. The animals were kept under observation until spontaneous death. Under the experimental conditions, all three compounds failed to show any carcinogenic effects.

Patients with benign diseases of the breast reacted in a migration inhibition assay with extracts of breast cancer and benign breast lesions and a human breast cancer-derived cell line, MCF-7. The incidence of reactivity of the patients with benign breast diseases against these antigens was similar to that of breast cancer patients. In addition, patients with breast cancer reacted to some extracts of benign breast lesions. The reactivity occurred in patients with several different histopathologic types of breast lesions, but was not found in women with no detectable pathologic lesions.

A review of the morphologic, biochemical and clinical effects of hyperthermia on malignant cells indicates the presence of two principally different heat-induced alterations. (1) A 'destructive' lysosomal dependent cytoplasmic reaction dominates the tumour-cell devitalization in vivo, probably influenced by the characteristic tumour cell environment. (2) 'Repressive' nuclear abnormalities may be observed, but seem to be secondary in the in vivo reaction. However, under certain conditions (combined treatment modalities) this nuclear effect may be of importance.
