Clones of serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis causing systemic disease in The Netherlands, 1958-1986.

Serogroup B isolates of Neisseria meningitidis recovered from 278 patients with systemic disease in the Netherlands between 1958 and 1986 were analyzed with respect to serotype and multilocus enzyme genotype. Of the isolates, 28% were serotype 2b and 53% were neither serotypeable nor serosubtypeable. There were 145 distinct multilocus genotypes (electrophoretic types, ETs), with up to 31 isolates belonging to the same ET. Temporal changes in the genotypic composition of meningococcal populations in the Netherlands were demonstrated by the recent occurrence of disease caused by three clone line…

Examining the role of patients' socioeconomic status in the appraisal stage of health technology assessment in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic health inequalities remain a persistent public health concern, and there is growing recognition of the potential role of health technology assessment (HTA) in addressing them. In the Netherlands, the National Health Care Institute (ZIN) does not formally consider socioeconomic status (SES) in the assessment stage of HTA. This study examined whether SES is considered in the appraisal stage. METHODS: We reviewed all publicly accessible meeting minutes of the appraisal committee published between 2013 and 2024. Minutes were screened for SES-related search terms, and c…

An ecosyndemic framework for understanding obesity: Spatial clustering of health, environmental and socioeconomic disadvantage in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and related health conditions are unevenly distributed across neighborhoods, often co-occuring with multiple health challenges and socioeconomic disadvantages. Using an ecosyndemic framework, which integrates ecological and social dimensions that contribute to the clustering of health problems, this study examines how adverse obesity-related health outcomes spatially cluster in relation to obesogenic environments and socioeconomic position (SEP) across Dutch neighborhoods. METHODS: Nationwide neighborhood-level data on health outcomes, obesogenic environmental exposures

Beliefs, barriers, and behaviors: Exploring dementia prevention perspectives in culturally diverse populations in The Netherlands.

BackgroundModifiable risk factors play a key role in preventing or delaying dementia, yet little is known about how culturally diverse populations in Europe perceive these risk factors.ObjectiveThis study aimed to: (1) explore lay perceptions of dementia and its risk factors, and (2) examine how these perceptions interact with social and structural determinants of health to shape dementia prevention behaviors.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study guided by the I-Change model, using semi-structured interviews with 20 adults varying in cultural and linguistic background, education, and age. Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and suicide risk: A national cohort in the Netherlands.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked to an increased immediate risk of suicide. However, the relationship between long-term exposure to air pollution and suicide risk remains largely unknown. We assessed 1) the associations between long-term exposure to multiple air pollutants and suicide risk and 2) whether certain population groups are more vulnerable. We constructed a cohort of adults in the Netherlands with a follow-up from 2013 to 2018. Annual exposures to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) were assessed based on adults' residential history…

Effect of energy-efficient homes on residents' health: evidence from a natural experiment in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Many governments around the world subsidise upgrades to poorly insulated homes, yet the extent to which these energy-efficiency improvements reduce health risks remains unclear. We aimed to provide the first large-scale evidence on whether such retrofits lower the use of respiratory health-care services, particularly for children and other vulnerable individuals. METHODS: We leveraged a large-scale natural experiment in which public housing units across the Netherlands were retrofitted between 2012 and 2021. Upgrades included insulation and mechanical ventilation and were implemen…

Today's perspectives and challenges in moving management of patients with open tibial fractures forward in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Management of open crural fractures is challenging and requires close interdisciplinary collaboration. Dutch guidelines recommend soft tissue coverage, ideally within 72 h, no later than 1-week post-injury. The guideline does not recommend centralization or volume per center. This poses significant challenges in clinical practice. This study assessed current practice in the Netherlands regarding case volume, organization of care and timing of procedures, while also exploring barriers and facilitators for fracture fixation and soft tissue closure (fix and flap) within 72…

Transition to Adulthood and Adult Care: Lived Experiences of Young Adults with Perinatal HIV in the Netherlands.

The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a critical phase for young people living with perinatal HIV, who must navigate typical developmental milestones while managing a chronic illness and facing (fear of) societal stigma. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of Dutch young adults (aged 20-30) with perinatal HIV, focusing on their transition to adulthood and from pediatric to adult care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 participants. While the findings are based on a small, self-selected sample and are not intended to be statistically representative, t

Identifying key complex relations between education and healthcare in the Netherlands for future pandemic management.

BACKGROUND: The effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent policies in the Netherlands extended beyond healthcare, impacting other societal systems such as education. This study aims to conceptualize a coupled education-healthcare system during a pandemic and identify key variables and relations that affect the accessibility of both systems. This is essential to address the interconnected nature of pandemic policymaking and design policies that account for possible unintended consequences that interventions in healthcare may have on education and vice versa. Integrating behavioural science and epidemiology to improve early detection of zoonotic swine influenza in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Netherlands faces zoonotic disease risks due to its dense human and livestock populations. The 2009 H1N1 outbreak highlighted the pandemic potential of influenza virus reassortment. Effective preparedness requires integrating behavioural and epidemiological models. Human behaviour, shaped by personal, social, and institutional factors, is critical in detecting, intervening, and treating diseases. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), a framework was developed integrating knowledge from the TPB to improve early detection and response, using (zoonotic) swine…

Behavioural and environmental factors related to burn accidents in young children in the Netherlands: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Prevention programs can encourage parents to take safety measures to prevent burn injury in children under 5 years of age. The PRECEDE-PROCEED model of Green and Kreuter is a frequently used tool for stepwise development of effective prevention programs. In a previous study the first 2 phases of PRECEDE were completed. This follow-up study aimed to identify factors influencing the behaviour and environment of parents in the Netherlands, whose children under the age of 5 were involved in a burn accident and whose family was classified as at increased risk of burn injury. METHODS: I…

Trends and risk factors of stroke and mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Stroke after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an infrequent but serious complication with important impact on morbidity and mortality. Contemporary real-world evidence on the risk factors of early stroke after TAVI is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the incidence, temporal trends and predictors of in-hospital stroke after TAVI and to assess its association with mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, observational cohort study using data from the Netherlands Heart Registration of all TAVI procedures performed in the Netherlands between 2013 and 2023. Cost-effectiveness of immunization strategies to protect infants against respiratory syncytial virus in the Netherlands.

The European Medicines Agency has authorized two interventions to prevent lower respiratory tract disease due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV-LRTD) in infants: nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody, and bivalent stabilized prefusion F subunit maternal vaccine (RSVpreF). In the Netherlands, RSV-LRTD protection is recommended for all infants with nirsevimab given preferential recommendation over RSVpreF. We evaluated cost-effectiveness of various intervention strategies to prevent RSV in the Netherlands. We employed a cohort model to evaluate clinical and economic outcomes associated with RSV-LR…
