[Various neurophysiological aspects of examination of children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome].

EEG mapping was used to study the ECG and brain electric activity in 45 normal children and in 33 patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. Significant differences were discovered in the test parameters in groups of patients and normal children as well as in subgroups of patients with different varieties of the syndrome. Analysis of the ECG has shown that 78% of children with typical Tourette's syndrome manifest neurovegetative regulation impairment in the form of bradycardia and cardiac arrhythmia. In tourette-like disorders within the framework of schizophrenia and encephalopathy and i

Cortical evoked potentials by stimulation of the vesicourethral junction: clinical value and neurophysiological considerations.

In 21 healthy volunteers and 42 patients with either neurogenic bladder dysfunction (24), partial peripheral denervation of the bladder (12) or nonneurogenic bladder dysfunction (6) scalp-derived evoked potentials after stimulation of the vesicourethral junction (cortical evoked potentials) were recorded. In addition, evoked potentials from the posterior tibial nerve (tibial somatosensory evoked potentials) and from the pudendal nerve (pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials) were evaluated. The results obtained in normal subjects were reproducible and comparable to those reported in previous

Long-term clinical and neurophysiological effects of reconstructive vascular surgery for cerebral ischemia.

In a series of patients with unilateral supratentorial ischemia, clinical scores and parameters derived from computer analysis of the EEG and from measurement of the CBF were determined in the first several weeks after the stroke. Seventeen of these patients underwent a carotid-endarterectomy and 15 a STA-MCA bypass operation. Matched control patients were selected from the remaining cases. All patients, including the controls, were eligible for vascular surgery. The measurements were repeated respectively 3 months and 3 years after the first examination. Clinical improvement occurred in all g

Noise annoyance with regard to neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and personality variables.

To evaluate the relation between annoyance to environmental noise, general neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and other individual characteristics, experiments were undertaken in which 93 subjects assessed their subjective annoyance after exposure to noise under laboratory conditions. Evaluations were made of the discomfort threshold for pulsating sound, the light discomfort, and heat and cold discomfort. The heart rate and discomfort after exposure to a series of impulse noises was also determined. Subjective noise sensitivity, attitudes to noise, mood and personalit

[Function-oriented neurophysiologic diagnosis: long loop reflexes in spinal and cerebral lesions].

Neurophysiological methods which allow to identify objectively lesions of the efferent cortico-spinal pathways in humans are with the exception of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the motor cortex nor available. Long latency EMG responses from leg muscles are mediated by a "transcortical loop" and offer the possibility to detect in combination with sensory evoked potentials lesions both of the afferent proprioceptive and the efferent motor pathways. Subjects stood on a platform which was rotated toe-up (50 degrees/s, 4 degrees) around the axis of the ankle joint. This lead to two EMG r

[Factors causing apneas in otherwise healthy newborns: a neurophysiological Concept (author's transl)].

The possible origins of apneic spells in otherwise healthy neonates are reviewed. An analysis is made of how breathing is organized by the central and peripheral neuronal system, and how the overall control of breathing is sometimes inhibited by various active sleep mechanisms. From the neurophysiological point of view, a review is also made of various therapeutical approaches for the prevention or reduction of apneas. The hypothetical correlation between the sudden infant dealth syndrome and neonatal apneas is disussed briefly.

Clinical neurophysiology and cerebrospinal liquor analysis to detect Guillain-Barré syndrome and polyneuritis cranialis in COVID-19 patients: A case series.

We report a case series of five patients affected by SARS-CoV-2 who developed neurological symptoms, mainly expressing as polyradiculoneuritis and cranial polyneuritis in the 2 months of COVID-19 pandemic in a city in the northeast of Italy. A diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome was made on the basis of clinical presentation, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and electroneurography. In four of them, the therapeutic approach included the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (0.4 g/kg for 5 days), which resulted in the improvement of neurological symptoms. Clinical neurophysiology revealed …

A Novel High-Density Electromyography Probe for Evaluating Anorectal Neurophysiology: Design, Human Feasibility Study, and Validation with Trans-Sacral Magnetic Stimulation.

Fecal incontinence (FI) substantially impairs quality of life and imparts a major socioeconomic burden. Anal sphincter injury and possibly pudendal nerve damage are considered common causes, however, current clinical methods for evaluating their function remain suboptimal. Electromyography (EMG) and pudendal nerve terminal latencies have been applied with some success, but are not considered standard practice due to uncertain accuracy and clinical value. In this study we developed and applied a novel anorectal high-density (HD) EMG probe in humans and pigs to acquire quantitative electrophysio

Surgical anatomy and neurophysiology of the vagus nerve (VN) for standardised intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the inferior laryngeal nerve (ILN) during thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Standardisation of the intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) technique is a fundamental aspect in monitored thyroid surgery. Vagal nerve (VN) stimulation is essential for problem solving, recognition of any inferior laryngeal nerve (ILN) lesions and prediction of ILN post-operative function. Issues that have been overlooked in the literature, particularly in terms of prospective approaches, are the topographic relationship of the VN with the carotid and jugular vessels as well as the neurophysiology of the VN and ILN that have been studied, with a prospective approach, in patients …

Assessing Task-Dependent Neurophysiology During Virtual Reality Treadmill Training in Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience residual mobility deficits that can be improved with treadmill and virtual reality interventions. However, previous studies have not measured the underlying neurophysiology during these interventions nor assessed if acquiring such data is feasible in a TBI population. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure neurophysiology during a treadmill task and a treadmill with virtual reality task. SETTING: Data were collected…

Analgesic efficacy of paraspinal interfascial plane blocks performed with the use of neurophysiology monitoring for posterior cervical laminectomy surgery: a case series.

Posterior cervical spine surgery often requires large posterior midline incision which can result in poorly controlled postoperative pain, arises from iatrogenic mechanical damage, intraoperative retraction and resection to structures such as bone, ligaments, muscles, intervertebral disks, and zygapophysial joints. Local anesthetics may be utilized for infiltration of the surgical wound; however, their analgesic efficacy has not been studied in this surgical approach. Here we report a case series. Given the potential for targeted sensory dorsal ramus nerve blocks to provide better and extended
