The relationship between social support and mortality, especially cardio-cerebrovascular mortality, still has some limitations in the assessment of social support, sample selection bias, and short follow-up time. We used the data from 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine this relationship. The study analyzed a total of 6776 participants, divided into Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 according to the social support score (0-1; 2-3; 4-5). Multivariable adjusted COX regression analyses of our study showed that Group 3 and Group 2 had a reduced risk of all-cause an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We provided an updated overview of recent data on the value of nutritional therapy in the management of chronic wounds in older adults.
RECENT FINDINGS: In the last years, advances in this area were limited, but new data suggest considering nutritional care (screening and assessment of malnutrition and nutritional interventions) also in patients with chronic wounds other than pressure ulcers, namely venous leg and diabetic foot ulcers, as in these patients, nutritional derangements can be present despite overweight/obesity and their management is beneficial.
SUMMARY: Chron

Biliary atresia (BA) remains one of the most challenging conditions in paediatric surgery. It has several possible causes, resulting in a range of different clinical scenarios. The current therapeutic approach is almost entirely surgical with an initial attempt to restore bile flow and preserve the native liver using a Kasai-type portoenterostomy. Liver transplantation (cadaveric or living donor) is usually reserved for failure or for infants presenting late with end-stage cirrhosis. The role of adjuvant medical therapy is unclear and evidence of benefit is lacking. Nonetheless, the use of pos

Malnutrition, defined as deficiency, excess, or imbalance of nutrients, is a common complication in patients with liver disease, especially those with cirrhosis. Malnutrition may present as an isolated micronutrient deficiency, such as zinc deficiency, and it commonly presents as frailty and/or sarcopenia in patients with advanced liver disease. Patients with cirrhosis and/or alcohol-associated hepatitis should be assessed for malnutrition because it adversely affects patient outcomes including mortality, as well as waitlist and posttransplant outcomes among liver transplant candidates. The pr

Historically, several studies showed an association between malnutrition in critically ill patients and poor outcomes. As a result, the standard practice had been to provide patients with full nutrition as soon as possible to eliminate malnutrition, improve outcomes, and reduce mortality. However, several studies recently suggested that providing more calories and protein is not better in critical illness and may be harmful in certain disease states. This literature review and editorial describe the harms of maximal feeding early in critical illness.

BACKGROUND: India bears a burden of tuberculosis (TB) and undernutrition, both of which are interconnected, as undernutrition increases the susceptibility and affects the outcome of TB infection. To address this, government of India introduced Nikshay Poshan Yojana in 2018 to provide nutritional support to patients with TB. However, the end-usage and barriers of the monetary benefit under this scheme have not been extensively studied.
OBJECTIVE: To address these gaps, our study aimed to estimate Nikshay Poshan Yojana coverage among patients with tuberculosis in the Ballabgarh tuberculosis uni…

Sarcopenic dysphagia requires the presence of both dysphagia and generalized sarcopenia. The causes of dysphagia, except for sarcopenia, are excluded. The treatment for sarcopenic dysphagia includes resistance training along with nutritional support; however, whether rehabilitation procedures are useful remains unclear. In this narrative review, we present possible rehabilitation procedures as a resistance training for managing sarcopenic dysphagia, including Shaker exercise, Mendelsohn maneuver, tongue-hold swallow exercise, jaw-opening exercise, swallow resistance exercise, lingual exercise,…

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in surgical patients is associated with delayed recovery, higher rates of morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospit … flammatory response which worsens intermediary metabolism.
CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional evaluation and nutritional support must be performed in all surgical patients, in order to minimize infectious complications. Enteral nutrition early in the postoperative period is effective and well tolerated reducing infectious complications, improving wound healing and reducing le …

Adequate nutrition plays a major role, both in prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. There are such factors as the cellulose content in food ration, the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, vitamins, physical activity. Cancer cachexia are observed at 70% of oncology patients in the terminal stage of cancer. Purposes of nutritional support are improvement of the quality of life, in particular terminally ill, the reduction of the length of hospital stay and costs of treatment, the prevention infectious and postoperative complications. Several deaths were reported when total parenteral nutrition came into use in the early seventies. These deaths resulted from overzealous total parenteral nutrition leading to what was termed the refeeding syndrome. Actually, this syndrome had been reported years earlier, especially at the end of the second world war. The refeeding syndrome includes hypophosphatemia, water and electrolyte overload, hypertonic states, vitamin deficiencies and neurological disorders. Malnourished patients on enteral and/or parenteral nutrition are exposed to specific complications linked to artificial nutrition.

Objectives: this study aimed to evaluate the relationship of Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002) and in-hospital major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with severe heart failure. Methods: an observational study was conducted at the emergency intensive care units (EICU) of Shandong University Qilu Hospital from January 2017 to December 2019. Nutritional screening and assessment were performed at the time of admission to hospital with the NRS2002. Results: of the 209 patients included, 16 cases (7.66 %) were not at nutritional risk, and 193 cases (92.34 %) were at risk. Among them

The occurrence of a postoperative complication represents an additional stress factor for patients and leads in many cases rapidly to a malnutrition status. Thus a nutritional support is required as soon as the foreseeable duration of starvation has a longer duration than one week. Considering its lower risk of septic complications and lower cost, enteral feeding should be initiated as soon as possible. Appraisal of caloric needs with standard formulas often leads to inappropriate nutritional management. Therefore the requirements should be assessed by indirect calorimetry if available. Nutrit…

UNLABELLED: Tongue cancer significantly impacts speech and swallowing functions, necessitating comprehensive rehabilitation post-surgery. This study evaluates the rehabilitation outcomes of Indian patients who underwent tongue cancer surgery, focusing on speech therapy, nutritional support, and psychosocial interventions. A prospective cohort study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2022 at a tertiary care center in India. Fifty-five patients who underwent partial or hemi-glossectomy were enrolled. Baseline data, including demographic information, medical history, and nutritional stat…

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use has an effect on nutritional status, with nutritional deficiencies being a major contributor to morbidity, for example Wernicke's encephalopathy. Currently, there is an absence of best-practice guidelines to support general practitioners (GPs) in the identification and management of malnutrition and nutritional risk factors in patients who drink at risky levels.
OBJECTIVE: This article reviews some of the nutritional considerations in patients who drink at risky levels or who have alcohol dependence, with the aim of enhancing GPs' awareness of the nutritional considera

INTRODUCTION: Some recent studies suggest that the blanket use of parenteral nutrition may be harmful in the event of short-term starvation due to acute illness. Utilization of endogenous substrate resources which are mobilized anyway due to acute illness or operation allows the organism to survive and recover from acute damage without nutritional support. Modern, less invasive procedures in surgery, good preoperative nutritional status and early recovery of food intake after surgery on the one hand and the side effects and risks of artificial nutrition on the other hand raise the question whe…
