BACKGROUND: Information on the long-term efficacy of intravenous pamidronate therapy in Asian patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is limited. We report our experience using pamidronate in Taiwanese patients with OI.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients with type I, III, or IV OI (eight males and 18 females; age range at last follow-up, 2.9-39.2 years) who received (or were currently receiving) intravenous pamidronate treatment (30mg/m2/dose, every month) were retrospectively analyzed. BACKGROUND: Plasma concentrations of procollagen peptides are decreased in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), whereas other bone formation markers may be increased. We examined the utility of combining these markers in the diagnosis of OI in adults.

The authors reviewed 17 fractures of the olecranon apophysis in 10 children with mild osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Seven of the 10 patients sustained the same injury to the opposite extremity 1 to 70 months (mean 15.1) after their initial fracture. Four fractures were initially treated by cast immobilization alone. Two of these eventually required operative treatment because of refracture or late displacement. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inherited generalized disorder of type-I collagen synthesis often associated with hearing loss. We present a case of OI type I in which hearing loss led to examination of the temporal bone with MRI. In the osseous otic capsule MRI demonstrated pericochlear lesions with soft tissue signal intensity and contrast enhancement. Changes similar to otosclerosis have been described in the temporal bone of OI patients when applying CT, but reports on MRI findings do not yet exist.
