Dental anomalies in pediatric patients with familial adenomatous polyposis.

Familial adenomatous polyposis patients often present with non-malignant extra-intestinal manifestations which include dental anomalies that may be evident prior to the appearance of the colonic adenomas. The aims of this study were to describe the prevalence and type of dental anomalies and the relationships between gene mutations and dental anomalies in these patients. Twenty-two pediatric familial adenomatous polyposis patients and 46 controls, who were age and gender matched participated. Familial adenomatous polyposis patient's had a dental examination with panoramic radiograph and medica

The lucent rim: a radiographic and computed tomography sign of Paget's disease of the skull.

In seven of eight patients with osteoporosis circumscripta of the cranial vault, the pagetic bone lacunae were separated from the normal bone by a lucent rim visible on conventional radiographs and computed tomography scans. The contour of the rim was sharp on the side of the healthy surrounding bone and hazy on the side of the defect. To our knowledge, this sign has been reported in one single previous article dealing with two pagetic patients with the bisphosphonate escape phenomenon.

Cerebellar hypoplasia-endosteal sclerosis: a long term follow-up.

Cerebellar hypoplasia with endosteal sclerosis is an infrequent entity that has been described in only four cases. Major clinical symptoms are cerebellar hypoplasia causing ataxia, hypotonia, mild to moderate developmental delay, microcephaly, growth retardation, endosteal sclerosis, tooth eruption disturbances, and hip dislocations. We report on a girl with this entity, whom we followed for 11 years. The endosteal sclerosis remained stationary over time, as were the clinical neurological symptoms, but neuroadiological symptoms were slowly progressive. We provide a short review of this probabl

[Osterosclerotic myeloma and polyneuropathy].

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral neuropathy is a common complication in patients with osteosclerotic myeloma. The association with hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and variable endocrine disturbances and skin changes constitute the POEMS syndrome. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is unclear, but the presence of M protein and elevated levels of interleukin-6 in the serum of patients, suggests an immunologic mechanism. CASE: A 68 year old woman presented with a 2 year history of progressive weakness and paresthesias in both legs. Neurological examination revealed a sensorimotor polyneuropathy,

Clinical course of bone metastasis from prostatic cancer following endocrine therapy: examination with bone x-ray.

X-ray findings of bone metastatic lesions from 81 cases of stage D2 prostatic cancer were examined before and following endocrine therapy. Untreated lesions were classified into five types; osteoblastic (15%), mixed, but mainly osteoblastic (31%), mixed, but mainly osteolytic (17%), osteolytic (10%), and undetermined with a positive bone scan (27%). Patients with two mixed types had a tendency of widely speeded areas of metastasis and elevated serum prostatic acid phosphatase. Temporal enlargement of sclerotic lesion immediately after the start of therapy did not indicate disease progression.

High bone mass due to novel LRP5 and AMER1 mutations.

WNT signaling is a key regulator of bone metabolism and its increased or decreased activity leads to skeletal disorders. Here we describe two patients with high bone mass (HBM) caused by novel mutations in two different WNT pathway components. The first patient is a 53-year-old male with HBM. He was diagnosed at adult age based on significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD). He has undergone several surgeries due to excessive bone in ear canals, bilateral jaw exostoses and mandibular tori. Radiographs show severe cortical thickening of cranial and long bones. Sanger sequencing identifie

Intraosseous spindle cell hemangioma of the calcaneus: a case report and review of the literature.

Spindle cell hemangioma, a rare benign tumor characterized by cavernous blood vessels and spindled areas, typically arises in the subcutis of the distal extremities, particularly the hand. The case of intraosseous spindle cell hemangioma is extremely rare, and only 1 case arises in the frontal bone has been reported previously. We describe herein a case of intraosseous spindle cell hemangioma occurring in the left calcaneus in a 65-year-old woman. The patient was successfully treated by the operation. The present case is instructive especially in the differential diagnosis of primary bone tumo

Ischial tuberosity apophysitis and avulsion among athletes.

Ischial tuberosity pain in athletes may be caused by several clinical entities, which include acute and old bony or periosteal avulsions and apophysitis. We studied the natural course of these injuries based on our clinical case series of fourteen patients with apophysitis and twenty-one with avulsion of the ischial tuberosity. Only patients with the diagnosis confirmed by X-ray finding were included. The clinical diagnostic criteria by ischial apophysitis consisted of gradually increasing functional and palpatory pain at the ischial tuberosity without any major trauma at the beginning of the

[Myeloma and osteocondensation (apropos of 2 cases)].

The authors report two cases of multiple myeloma which were typical both clinically and in the laboratory but XRay examination, on the other hand, showed appearances of osteocondensation. In the first case, XRay showed both lesions of osteolysis in the cranial vault and homogeneous condensation of D11 and L1, together with the left iliac crest. In the other case, there was osteolysis of the acetabulum together with areas of osteocondensation distributed throughout the pelvis and upper ends of the femurs, with two areas of annular fibrosis circumscribing the area of osteolysis, finally, homogen

Conditional mouse models support the role of SLC39A14 (ZIP14) in Hyperostosis Cranialis Interna and in bone homeostasis.

Hyperostosis Cranialis Interna (HCI) is a rare bone disorder characterized by progressive intracranial bone overgrowth at the skull. Here we identified by whole-exome sequencing a dominant mutation (L441R) in SLC39A14 (ZIP14). We show that L441R ZIP14 is no longer trafficked towards the plasma membrane and excessively accumulates intracellular zinc, resulting in hyper-activation of cAMP-CREB and NFAT signaling. Conditional knock-in mice overexpressing L438R Zip14 in osteoblasts have a severe skeletal phenotype marked by a drastic increase in cortical thickness due to an enhanced endosteal bone

Utility of osteosclerotic lesion biopsy in diagnosis of POEMS syndrome: A case report.

RATIONALE: We report a case of successful diagnosis of POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes) syndrome based on monoclonality that was confirmed by an osteosclerotic lesion biopsy in a patient without pathognomonic symptoms or monoclonal gammopathy, probably because of comorbidities, which included systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjögren syndrome. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old woman presented with an approximately 2-year history of numbness in the toes that had gradually spread, along with muscle weakness in both

Inflammatory and degenerative sacroiliac joint disease in a primary back pain cohort.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of sacroiliac (SI) joint abnormalities in a primary low back pain population remains unresolved. The aims of our study were to define the prevalence of SI joint disease in this cohort, and to identify clinical features that might accurately predict radiographic changes in the SI joint and spine. METHODS: Lumbar spine and anteroposterior pelvis radiographs taken over a 3-year period for the evaluation of back pain at a major chiropractic college were scored for the presence of inflammatory or degenerative features. Data were subsequently extracted by means of a predet
