Reentrant superconductivity at an oxide heterointerface.

A magnetic field typically suppresses superconductivity by either breaking Cooper pairs via the Zeeman effect or inducing vortex formation. However, under certain circumstances, a magnetic field can stabilize superconductivity instead. This seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon is associated with magnetic interactions and has been extensively studied in three-dimensional materials. By contrast, this phenomenon, hinting at unconventional superconductivity, remains largely unexplored in two-dimensional systems, with moiré-patterned graphene being the only known example. Here, we report the obser

Oxidative stress in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains a leading cause of blindness, with oxidative stress as a central pathogenic driver. However, the translation of this mechanistic knowledge into clinical diagnostics and targeted therapies has been hampered by inconsistent biomarkers and a simplistic view of redox balance. This critical review moves beyond cataloging oxidative markers to evaluate their biological specificity, analytical robustness, and compartmentalization between systemic circulation and the ocular microenvironment. We dissect the technical challenges of direct reactive species measurement and

Protein oxidation in crowded environments.

Proteins are the most abundant macromolecules in biological systems. This high abundance and the presence of electron-rich side-chains make proteins a major target for biological oxidants. Protein oxidation encompasses a complex set of reactions that, depending on protein structure and the chemical properties of the oxidant, can trigger specific and reversible modifications, or can irreversibly damage multiple side-chains. Therefore, understanding protein oxidation from a mechanistic and kinetic perspective is important to illuminate the molecular basis of physiological (e.g. redox signaling)

[Sleep disorders and oxidative stress].

Sleep disorders represent a significant medical and social issue, closely linked to the development of oxidative stress and cognitive impairment. This review summarizes current evidence for a bidirectional association between sleep disorders and oxidative stress. Sleep deprivation and chronic insomnia are associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and lipid damage, which together create a cycle that exacerbates sleep disturbances and contributes to cognitive impairment. The role of intermittent hypoxia in obstructive sleep apnea s

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Periodontitis.

Periodontitis and noncommunicable diseases share an overall inflammatory state often sustained by concomitant oxidative stress as one of the main processes involved. A huge amount of literature supports such a main pathogenic process, which is also considered the therapeutic target. The attempt to control inflammation by acting on oxidative stress has given largely unsatisfactory results, either as preventive or as treatment approaches. To propose new ideas that will help in this field, the paper reviewed all physiological processes involved in oxidative stress in periodontitis. The discussion

Mechanochemical Nitrous Oxide Decomposition.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the top three greenhouse gases, together with carbon dioxide and methane, but it is stable enough not to be easily decomposed under thermocatalytic conditions, even at high temperature (445 °C). Herein, an efficient N2O decomposition method is reported using nickel oxide catalyst under mechanochemical conditions operated near ambient temperature. The mechanochemical N2O decomposition method exhibited a rapid reaction rate of 1761.3 mL h-1 and a high conversion of 99.98% even at 42 °C, compared to the thermochemical method (294.9 mL h-1 and 49.16% at 445 °C). Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Hypertension.

Arterial hypertension is a silent and progressive disease with deleterious vascular implications on all target organs, including the heart, the brain, the kidneys, and the eyes. Oxidative stress, defined as the overproduction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) over antioxidants, is capable of deteriorating not only the normal endothelial but also the cellular function with further cardiovascular implications. Xanthine oxidase activity, NADPH oxidase overexpression, and ROS production lead to hypertension and high arterial tone, culminating in end-organ damage. The inactivation of NO by superoxid

Neopterin in inflammation and oxidative stress.

Inflammation and oxidative stress play a critical pathophysiological role in the onset and the progression of a wide range of chronic disease states that impose a significant public health burden worldwide, e.g., atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, rheumatic diseases, and dementia. Available biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, e.g., C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukins, are characterized by relatively poor specificity, significant inter-individual variability, and limited ability to capture the upstream cellular and molecular mechanisms involved i

Oxidative Stress in Huntington's Disease.

Although the pathogenesis of the neurodegenerative phenomena of Huntington's disease (HD) is not well known, in the last 30 years, numerous data have been published that suggest a possible role of oxidative stress. The majority of studies regarding this issue were performed in different experimental models of this disease (neurotoxic models such as intraperitoneal injection of 3-nitropropionic acid or intrastriatal injection of quinolinic acid, transgenic animal models for HD, and cell cultures) and, less frequently, in samples of brain tissue, plasma/serum, blood cells, and other tissues from

Oxidation Triggered Supramolecular Chirality.

Topochemical reactions normally occurring in the solid and crystalline state exhibit solvent-free and catalyst-free properties, with high atom economy properties, which have been widely applied in materials science and polymer synthesis. Herein, we explore the potential of topochemical reactions for controlling the emergence of supramolecular chirality and the precise fabrication of chiroptical materials. Boronic acid pinacol esters (BPin) were conjugated to naphthalimides containing an inherent chiral cholesteryl group linked by alkyl or benzene spacers. The BPin segments were oxidized by H2O

[Nitrous oxide as a party drug].

In recent years, reports of health problems associated with nitrous oxide consumption have significantly increased. In Germany, nitrous oxide (N2O) is easily available in cartridges without legal restrictions. The main reason for its popularity in the party scene are the euphoric, psychedelic effects of the gas. In addition to severe and sometimes irreversible health problems associated with long-term use of nitrous oxide, e.g., anemia and nerve damage, life-threatening or fatal consequences of acute nitrous oxide consumption can also occur: accidents under the influence of nitrous oxide, pneu

The boon and bane of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) has been known since the end of the eighteenth century. Today, N2O plays a huge role as a greenhouse gas and an ozone-depleting stratospheric molecule. The main sources of anthropogenic N2O emissions are agriculture, fuel combustion, wastewater treatment, and various industrial processes. By contrast, the contribution of medical N2O to the greenhouse effect appears to be small. The recreational and medical uses of N2O gradually diverged over time. N2O has analgesic and anesthetic effects, making it widely used in modern dentistry and surgery. New research has also begun stu

Nitric oxide in kidney transplantation.

Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with kidney failure. Compared to dialysis therapy, it provides better quality of life and confers significant survival advantage at a relatively lower cost. However, the long-term success of this life-saving intervention is severely hampered by an inexorable clinical problem referred to as ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), and increases the incidence of post-transplant complications including loss of renal graft function and death of transplant recipients. Burgeoning evidence shows that nitric oxide (NO), a poisonous gas at high c

Oxidative stress and alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata (AA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss on the scalp or any other part of the hair-bearing skin. While the collapse of the immune privilege is considered as one of the most accepted theories accounting for AA, the exact pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear by now. Other factors, such as genetic predisposition, allergies, microbiota, and psychological stress, also play an important role in the occurrence and development of AA. Oxidative stress (OS), an unbalance between the oxidation and antioxidant defense systems, is believed

Sustainable Wacker-Type Oxidations.

The Wacker reaction is the oxidation of olefins to ketones and typically requires expensive and scarce palladium catalysts in the presence of an additional copper co-catalyst under harsh conditions (acidic media, high pressure of air/dioxygen, elevated temperatures). Such a transformation is relevant for industry, as shown by the synthesis of acetaldehyde from ethylene as well as for fine-chemicals, because of the versatility of a carbonyl group placed at specific positions. In this regard, many contributions have focused on controlling the chemo- and regioselectivity of the olefin oxidation b

Nutrigenetic reprogramming of oxidative stress.

Retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa, age-related retinal degeneration, oxygen-induced retinopathy, and ischemia-reperfusion injury cause debilitating and irreversible vision loss. While the exact mechanisms underlying these conditions remain unclear, there has been a growing body of evidence demonstrating the pathological contributions of oxidative stress across different cell types within the eye. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor (Nrf2), a transcriptional activator of antioxidative genes, and its regulator Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) have emerged as promisi

Nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nitrous oxide misuse is a recognized issue worldwide. Prolonged misuse inactivates vitamin B12, causing a myeloneuropathy. METHODS: Twenty patients presenting between 2016 and 2020 to tertiary hospitals in Sydney with myeloneuropathy due to nitrous oxide misuse were reviewed. RESULTS: The average age was 24 years, and mean canister consumption was 148 per day for 9 months. At presentation, paresthesias and gait unsteadiness were common, and seven patients were bedbound. Mean serum B12 was normal (258 pmol/L, normal range [NR] = 140-750) as was active B12 (87 pmol/L, n

Oxidative Stress in Optic Neuropathies.

Increasing evidence indicates that changes in the redox system may contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple optic neuropathies. Optic neuropathies are characterized by the neurodegeneration of the inner-most retinal neurons, the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), and their axons, which form the optic nerve. Often, optic neuropathies are asymptomatic until advanced stages, when visual impairment or blindness is unavoidable despite existing treatments. In this review, we describe systemic and, whenever possible, ocular redox dysregulations observed in patients with glaucoma, ischemic optic neuropa

Oxidative Stress in Preterm Newborns.

Preterm babies are highly susceptible to oxidative stress (OS) due to an imbalance between the oxidant and antioxidant systems. The generation of free radicals (FR) induces oxidative damage to multiple body organs and systems.
