Autonomic neural dysfunction in recently diagnosed diabetic subjects.

Because onset of autonomic neural dysfunction in the diabetic syndrome has not been well established, sensitive and quantitative measures of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function were made in 19 non-insulin-dependent (NIDD) and 14 insulin-dependent (IDD) recent-onset diabetic subjects. The known duration of diabetes mellitus in the NIDD subjects was less than or equal to 12 mo. The duration in the IDD subjects was less than or equal to 24 mo. RR-variation during beta adrenergic blockade (an index of an ANS reflex involving the cardiac parasympathetic nervous system [PNS] pathway) was smaller…

The Tumor Neuroimmune Niche: A Unifying Framework for Cancer Progression and Its Neuropsychiatric Burden.

BACKGROUND: Cancer has traditionally been framed as a cell-intrinsic genetic disease and, more recently, as a disorder of the tumor microenvironment (TME). An emerging third view reframes malignancy as a systems-level neuroimmune disorder, in which neurons, glia, immune cells, and tumor cells form a continuously communicating network, the tumor neuroimmune niche. SUMMARY: This review synthesizes evidence that the nervous system actively regulates tumor initiation, proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis through autonomic, sensory, and neuroendocrine inputs, while tumors in turn

Novice Meditators of an Easily Learnable Audible Mantram Sound Self-Induce an Increase in Vagal Tone During Short-term Practice: A Preliminary Study.

INTRODUCTION: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a vital role in regulation of the physiological processes during normal and pathological conditions. Heart rate variability (HRV) is regarded as a major indicator of the self-regulatory strength and balance of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and sympathetic nerve system (SNS) impulses, as interpreted by the intrinsic nervous system of the heart. The present study focuses on the evaluation of the effects of audible and mindful practice of chanting meditation on HRV and on the cognitive disposition. METHODOLOGY: The subjects were rando…

Acute Effect of Selective Chemical Inactivation of Sympathetic or Parasympathetic Atrial Ganglionated Plexus Structures on Atrial Fibrillation Inducibility in Pigs.

We studied the role of both parts of the autonomic intracardiac nervous system in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). In 12 pigs weighing 39±3 kg, AF was induced by burst stimulation. Chemical inactivation of intrinsic cardiac neurons within the right atria was performed by transendocardial injections of liposomal neuromodulators into the dorsal part of the right atrial wall. Sympathetic and parasympathetic terminals were inactivated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, n=6) and ethylcholine aziridinium ion (AF64A, n=6), respectively. Neuromodulators were encapsulated in liposomes (LS) wi

Alpha-synuclein pathology of the spinal and peripheral autonomic nervous system in neurologically unimpaired elderly subjects.

Studies on cases with incidental Lewy body disease (ILBD) suggest that alpha-synuclein (alphaSN) pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD) starts in lower brainstem nuclei and in the olfactory bulb. However, medullary structures as the induction site of alphaSN pathology have been questioned as large parts of the nervous system, including the spinal cord and the peripheral autonomic nervous system (PANS), have not been examined in ILBD. Thus, the time course of PD lesions in the spinal cord or PANS in relation to medullary lesions remains unknown. We collected 98 post mortem cases with no referenc

Stress Responses and Recovery in Student Athletes: Heart Rate Variability and Skin Conductance Patterns Across Cognitive Challenges-A Pilot Study.

This pilot study aimed to examine autonomic nervous system responses in student-athletes using heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance level (SCL) during sequential cognitive stressors, including a modified Stroop test and a mental math task. Fifty-two university athletes (mean age = 21.7 ± 2.8 years) participated in this repeated-measures experimental study. HRV and SCL were recorded at baseline, during each stressor, and throughout the recovery periods following each task. Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significantly elevated SCL across experimental conditions [F(2.09, 100.53) =

High-risk area for migraine attacks - a new concept in migraine pathophysiology.

Migraine is a common primary and often disabling neurological disorder, whose pathophysiology is still debated. It does not appear to be an isolated event of head pain but the consequence of recurrent disruption of healthy homeostasis in some brain functions. We propose a new theoretical model, focused on the existence of a "high-risk area" for migraine attacks, which can represent a potential target of non-pharmacologic treatment and prevention. We suggest that migraine arises from the combined effects of three primary factors, namely depressive or unstable mood, unrestful sleep and sympathet

The Effect of Tibetan Singing Bowls on Stress Reduction: A Heart Rate Variability Study.

Music therapy, especially Tibetan Singing Bowls (TSB) rooted in ancient practices, holds promise for enhancing mental well-being and autonomic regulation through their unique acoustic properties and therapeutic vibrations. Previous research indicated that TSB could influence physiological responses, including heart rate variability (HRV), a significant indicator of autonomic nervous system activity (ANS) and stress. This study aimed to study the impact of TSB on HRV. The Polar Ignite Series 1 wristwatch continuously measured Heart Rate (HR). Eight participants, aged 20-22, were recorded throug

Prostatic nerve subtypes independently predict biochemical recurrence in prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To describe nerve subtypes involved by perineural invasion (PNI) in prostate cancer and their relationship with clinicopathological parameters and recurrence risk. METHODS: 141 prostatectomy specimens from men with localized prostate cancer and known perineural invasion were analyzed. Index tumor blocks were stained for perineural invasion and sympathetic/parasympathetic markers. For 98 patients with complete staining, nerves from up to three hotspot regions of intraprostatic perineural invasion were classified according to autonomic subtype and perineural invasion status. Findings

Autonomic Regulation and Ventricular Arrhythmias.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) has a crucial role of regulating cardiac function in the physiological state and contributes to the pathogenesis of arrhythmias in the diseased state. The cardiac neuraxis consists of multiple feedback loops consisting of efferent and afferent limbs, mediating neurotransmission to and from the heart. Efferent parasympathetic neurotransmission is mediated by the vagus nerve, while paravertebral sympathetic ganglia relay efferent sympathetic neurotransmission to the heart. The association between autonomic activity and ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) has been studied

Aroused at Home: Basic Autonomic Regulation during Orthostatic and Physical Activation is Altered in Children with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Previous research has documented altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) reactivity to laboratory-based social stress tasks in children with social anxiety disorder (SAD). It is unclear, however, whether these alterations are caused by the unfamiliar and possibly threatening lab environment or whether they generalize to other, more representative contexts. Sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic functioning was assessed in the home (minimizing environmental threat) during a supine baseline phase and two physical activation phases (orthostatic stress, stair stepping) in children (9-13 years) w

Coexistence of adrenergic and cholinergic nerves in the inferior hypogastric plexus: anatomical and immunohistochemical study with 3D reconstruction in human male fetus.

Classic anatomical methods have failed to determine the precise location, origin and nature of nerve fibres in the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP). The purpose of this study was to identify the location and nature (adrenergic and/or cholinergic) of IHP nerve fibres and to provide a three-dimensional (3D) representation of pelvic nerves and their relationship to other anatomical structures. Serial transverse sections of the pelvic portion of two human male fetuses (16 and 17 weeks' gestation) were studied histologically and immunohistochemically, digitized and reconstructed three-dimensionall

Reduced tear fluid production in neurological diseases: a cohort study in 708 patients.

BACKGROUND: Tear fluid (TF) production is an important component of normal ocular function. It is regulated by parasympathetic and sympathetic innervation. Because parasympathetic nerve fibers originate in the brainstem, pathology in this brain region may affect TF production. For example, a reduction in TF production has been described in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: TF was collected at one center from 772 individuals, 708 of which were patients with different neurological diseases, and 64 healthy controls. Wetting lengths (WL) were recorded using Schirmer test strips wit
