Hypertension is common in primary hyperparathyroidism, but the mechanisms are not clear. Significant hypercalcemia induces elevation in blood pressure (BP), whereas excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) lowers BP. However, in chronic renal failure (CRF) and secondary hyperparathyroidism, the hypercalcemia-induced hypertension is more severe. The response of serum 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25-OH2CC) concentration to the administration of parathyroid extract (PTE) was studied in a patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type 1, 3 days after withdrawal of dihydrotachysterol (DHT) treatment. The patient had had a normal serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level on DHT for 6 years. After PTE administration no rise of the 1,25-OH2CC concentration and no response of urinary cAMP and P were seen.

Plasma levels of immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT) and parathyroid hormone (iPTH) have been measured sequentially in 6 patients following successful renal transplantation (RT) and in 3 patients during the recovery phase of acute renal failure (ARF). iCT and iPTH returned to normal values within a few days when glomerular filtration improved; both hormones rose in cases of acute graft rejection. In 44 patients, all suffering from a malignant disease with hypercalcaemia, plasma parathormone was measured by a radioimmunoassay measuring the intact PTH molecule. In mice, homozygous by microphthalmia (mi/mi) gene the disturbance of dental development was due to defects in dental pulp and to the absence of bone resorpion. Administration of heparin or parathyroid hormone stimulated dental eruption in mi/mi mice. Following combined action of heparin and parathyroid hormone the number of erupted teeth was practically the same as after the action of heparin alone. Possibly the level of heparin is insufficient, but secretion of parathyroid hormone is unimpaired in mi/mi mice.
