Effects of deep-sea cage culture on water quality and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of suspended particulate organic matter in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass.

The first submersible cage was launched in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM) to culture salmonid. Four cruises were conducted to study the impact of aquaculture activities on the surrounding environment. Results indicated that water quality varied among different sampling times, water layers, and sampling stations. In July and August, low water temperature and high dissolved oxygen concentration were found in the bottom water, which provides a suitable habitat for salmonid culture. Significant correlations were observed between δ13C values in particulate organic matter (POM) and chlorophy

Are associations of leisure-time physical activity with mortality attenuated by high levels of chronic ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in older adults? A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although leisure-time physical activity (PA) has established health benefits in older adults, it is equivocal if exercising in environments with high levels of PM2.5 concentrations is equally beneficial for them. To explore the independent and joint associations of ambient PM2.5 and PA with all-cause mortality among adults aged 60 or older and to assess the modifying effect of age (60-74 years vs. 75+ years) on the joint associations. METHODS: A prospective cohort study based on the MJ Cohort repeat examinations (2005-2016) and the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network

The renoprotective effects of hesperidin on kidney injury induced by exposure to severe chronic dust storm particulate matter through inhibiting the Smads/TGF-β1 signaling in rat.

Exposure to dust storm particulate matter (PM) is detrimental to kidney tissue. In this study, the impacts of chronic intake of dusty PM were explored as a major objective in a specified compartment to make a real-like dust storm (DS) model, and the role of hesperidin (HSP) as an antioxidant on kidney tissue was assessed in rats. Thirty-two male Wistar rats (200-220 g) were randomly allocated into 4 groups: CA+NS: (clean air and normal saline as a vehicle of HSP). Dusty PM and NS (DS+NS). HSP+ CA: rats received 200 mg/kg of HSP by gavage for 28 days, once daily in addition to exposure to clean…

Seasonal variations of airborne phthalates and novel non-phthalate plasticizers in a test residence in cold regions: Effects of temperature, humidity, total suspended particulate matter, and sources.

As a class of plasticizers widely used in consumer products, some phthalate esters (PAEs) have been restricted due to their adverse health effects and ubiquitous presence, leading to the introduction of alternative non-phthalates plasticizers (NPPs) to the market. However, few studies focus on the influence of environmental parameters on the presence of these plasticizers and the potential human health risks for people living in poorly ventilated indoor spaces in cold regions. We investigated the trends of PAEs and NPPs in air in a typical indoor residence in northern China for over one year.

Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) depletes the ovarian follicle reserve and causes sex-dependent cardiovascular changes in apolipoprotein E null mice.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure accelerates atherosclerosis and contains known ovotoxic chemicals. However, effects of exposure to PM2.5 on the finite ovarian follicle pool have hardly been investigated, nor have interactions between ovarian and cardiovascular effects. We hypothesized that subchronic inhalation exposure to human-relevant concentrations of PM2.5 results in destruction of ovarian follicles via apoptosis induction, as well as accelerated recruitment of primordial follicles into the growing pool. Further, we hypothesized that destruction of ovarian follicles e…

Short-interval exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exacerbates the susceptibility of pulmonary damage in setting of lung ischemia-reperfusion injury in rodent: Pharmacomodulation of melatonin.

This study tested the hypothesis that exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution increased susceptibility of rat lung to damage from acute ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury that was reversed by melatonin (Mel) treatment. Male-adult SD rats (n = 30) were categorized into group 1 (normal control), group 2 (PM2.5 only), group 3 (IR only at day 8 after PM2.5 exposure), group 4 (PM2.5 + IR) and group 5 (PM2.5 + IR + Mel), and all animals were sacrificed by day 10 after PM2.5 exposure. Oxygen saturation (%) was significantly higher in group 1 than in other groups and significantly …

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) induces oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory response via up-regulating the expression of CYP1A1/1B1 in human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro.

We investigated the mechanism responsible for the oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory response triggered by PM2.5 collected from Nanjing of China. Two human bronchial epithelia cell lines (HBE and BEAS-2B) were used. Human gene expression profile microarray was performed to investigate the alteration of gene expression in PM2.5-treated HBE cells. The results of ROS assay and ELISA indicated that PM2.5 (150 μg/ml) increased the level of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoted the release of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in HBE cells. CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 were the top two up-regulated genes by

Fine particulate matter from urban ambient and wildfire sources from California's San Joaquin Valley initiate differential inflammatory, oxidative stress, and xenobiotic responses in human bronchial epithelial cells.

Environmental particulate matter (PM) exposure has been correlated with pathogenesis of acute airway inflammatory disease such as asthma and COPD. PM size and concentration have been studied extensively, but the additional effects of particulate components such as biological material, transition metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons could also impact initial disease pathogenesis. In this study, we compared urban ambient particulate matter (APM) collected from Fresno, California with wildfire (WF) particulate matter collected from Escalon, California on early transcriptional responses in…

Combined effects of extreme cold events and fine particulate matter on the success rate of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer: A multi-center retrospective cohort study in China.

As climate change intensifies, the rising frequency of extreme cold events (ECEs) and the known effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on reproductive health highlight a gap in understanding their combined impact on in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) success rate. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study in China to explore the association between ECEs and the risk of clinical pregnancy failure (CPF) undergoing IVF-ET, and the combined effects of ECEs and PM2.5 on CPF risk. The study included a total of 96,623 women undergoing IVF-ET, including 40,798 women underg…

Monitoring of arsenic, mercury and organic pesticides in particulate matter, ambient air and settled dust in natural history collections taking the example of the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin.

Chemical compounds such as arsenic, mercury and organochlorine pesticides have been extensively used as preventive and curative conservation treatments for cultural and biological collections to protect them from pest and mould infestations. Most of the aforementioned compounds have been classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic and represent a health risk for staff exposed to contaminated objects. A total of 30 compounds were analysed in settled dust, particulate matter and surrounding air collected at several locations in the natural history collections and adjacent rooms of the …

ROS-AKT-mTOR axis mediates autophagy of human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by cooking oil fumes-derived fine particulate matters in vitro.

Cooking oil fumes-derived PM2.5 (COFs-derived PM2.5) exposure can induce oxidative stress and cytotoxic effects. Here we investigated the role of ROS-AKT-mTOR axis in COFs-derived PM2.5-induced autophagy in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). HUVECs were treated with different concentrations of COFs-derived PM2.5, together with or without N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC, a radical scavenger) or 3-methyladenine (3-MA, an autophagy inhibitor). Cell viability was assessed with MTT assay, and ROS level was measured with DCFH-DA assay after the treatment. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM

Role of air pollution Particulate Matter (PM(2.5)) in the occurrence of loss of heterozygosity in multiple critical regions of 3p chromosome in human epithelial lung cells (L132).

Lung cancer still remains the most frequent type of cancer all around the world and the leading cause of cancer-related death. Even if tobacco use takes a major part in etiology of lung cancer, other explanations like genetic and lifestyle factors, and occupational and/or environmental exposure to carcinogens have to be considered. Hence, in this study, we were interested in the ability of in vitro short-term exposure to air pollution Particulate Matter (PM) to induce genomic alterations in Dunkerque City's PM(2.5)-exposed human epithelial lung cells (L132). The occurrence of MicroSatellite (M…

Protective effects of curcumin on short and long-term particulate matter (PM10/2.5) induced lung damage severity via modulation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation in mouse model.

Particulate matter (PM10/2.5) exposure and lung damage have recently been found to be associated with Neutrophil extracellular trap (NETs) formation and NETosis. NETs are the structures released from neutrophils in response to pathogens and during inflammatory response. This study was undertaken to investigate lung damage after short and long-term exposures to PM10/2.5 collected from Varanasi, one of the oldest Indian cities and its association with NETs formation in neutrophils. BALB/c mice were exposed to PM10/2.5(0.5 mg/kg, i.n.) for 2-4 weeks where wet/dry lung tissue weight ratio were sig…

The burden of acute respiratory infection attributable to fine particulate matter brought by dust storms among children under 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter brought by dust storms (dust PM2.5) poses a significant risk to children's health, particularly those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To quantify the impact of dust PM2.5 on children, current research focuses on acute respiratory infection (ARI) as a key health outcome, given its significant contribution to child mortality. However, the relationship used to evaluate the disease burden is mainly based on the total PM2.5 concentration, neglecting the specific effect of dust PM2.5 distinct from other PM2.5.This study aimed to …

Exposures to low-levels of fine particulate matter are associated with acute changes in heart rate variability, cardiac repolarization, and circulating blood lipids in coronary artery disease patients.

Exposure to air pollution is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, disease risk factors, and mortality. Specifically, particulate matter (PM), and to some extent ozone, are contributors to these effects. In addition, exposures to these pollutants may be especially dangerous for susceptible populations. In this repeated-visit panel study, cardiovascular markers were collected from thirteen male participants with stable coronary artery disease. For 0-4 days prior to the health measurement collections, daily concentrations of fine PM (PM2.5) and ozone were obtained from local central mo…

Endothelial BACE1, regulating the endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) induced by particulate matter (PM), is associated with cerebrovascular disease: Involvement of endothelial BACE1 in BBB disruption caused by diabetes.

EndMT has emerged as a mechanism of vascular disease onset. Our previous study showed that PM exposure induces EndMT-associated cardiac fibrosis and BACE1-mediated brain endothelial dysfunction. Here we investigated whether BACE1 and EndMT are associated with PM-induced brain endothelial dysfunction and the development of cerebrovascular diseases. The human brain endothelial cells exposed to PM showed that EndMT was regulated by BACE1. The mRNA sequencing analysis revealed that BACE1 overexpression induced EndMT through diverse genes, including GDF15. We found that these BACE1 and GDF15 protei
