Decoding penile pathology and imaging techniques.

Penile pathology encompasses a wide spectrum of conditions. Among the most common lesions are vascular abnormalities (Mondor's disease, thrombosis of the corpus cavernosum, erectile dysfunction and priapism), traumatic injuries (penile fracture, intracavernous and extraalbugineal haematomas), inflammatory and infectious processes (abscess and gangrenous cavernositis), benign lesions (Peyronie's disease and others) and malignant lesions (both primary and metastatic). A radiologist's knowledge of these conditions is fundamental for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, with a significant…

Eponyms in Dentistry - Physiology and Pathology.

Do you ever wonder who is behind the names, diseases, structures, procedures, or syndromes often taught in dental or medical school? For instance, the Cusp of Carabelli on a maxillary molar, the Wharton duct of the submandibular gland, or the Eustachian tube that gives the perception of a stuffed ear before landing are three structures named after individuals who first described them centuries ago. This is a long-overdue exploration of 60 names for 53 of the most relevant eponyms, many of whom have likely been forgotten.I.

New insights in multiple sclerosis pathology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current concepts suggest that relapse associated worsening as well as progression independent of relapse activity contributes to the long-term disability outcome of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). In this review, we summarize recent studies aiming at the identification of the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving disease progression with a strong focus on studies analyzing human tissue samples. RECENT FINDINGS: Tissue resident memory cells and microglia emerge as important drivers of persisting inflammation within the central nervous system (CNS) and disease progre

Microglia toxicology in α-synuclein pathology.

Oligomeric α-synuclein (α-syn) could activate microglia and induce inflammation to drive the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Our previous study revealed that significant difference of IL6ST in cerebrospinal fluid of PD patients and a decline in IL6ST/JAK2/STAT3 were also observed in α-syn-induced HMC3 cells. JAK2/STAT3 pathway is not only a novel inflammatory pathway but also involved in ferroptosis progress. In this study, our results demonstrated that α-syn could impair cell activity and promote HMC3 cells differentiation into M2 phenotype. Besides, α-syn stimulation led to the inh

Angiogenesis: Biology and Pathology, Second Edition.

During development, the first blood vessels are formed by the de novo assembly of angioblasts, endothelial cell precursors, in a process called vasculogenesis. All subsequent sprouting of blood vessels from pre-existing vessels is termed angiogenesis and is a process that continues throughout our lifespan during physiological processes such as wound healing as well as in number of pathological conditions, such as tumor growth and age-related macular degeneration. The circulatory system pumps blood from the heart out to the organs through arteries and deliveries oxygen and nutrients via capilla

Surgical pathology of Hirschsprung disease (HSCR).

The practice, art and science of surgical pathology for disease entities evolves continuously. Standards for diagnosis and management of Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), variants and related dysmotility disorders are no exception. Morphologic parameters that withstand the test of time still fulfill aims for 'personalized' and precision medicine. The expert management of these patients relies on critical points of interaction between pathologists, gastroenterologists and pediatric surgeons for: (1) diagnosis or exclusion within the HSCR spectrum, (2) intraoperative determination of the extent of ag…

Role of Microglia in Glaucomatous Pathology.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and is characterized by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells. Much research has gone into further understanding the pathology of this disease, including the extent to which microglia modulate its pathogenesis. This has revealed a role of the innate immune system in glaucomatous pathology that begins before the onset of retinal ganglion cell dysfunction and degeneration. Stimulation of the innate immune response triggers downstream cascades implicated in chronic disease, making immune pathways invaluable in our understanding …

Pathology of Common Nonneoplastic Orthopedic Diseases.

The tissues removed in the surgical treatment of nonneoplastic musculoskeletal diseases represent the most frequent source of surgical pathology specimens in bone and soft tissue pathology. The pathologic changes in these specimens are often not appreciated because of the lack of familiarity with the pathophysiology of the disorders, the mechanisms in which they affect tissue, and their morphologic expressions. In this review, we highlight the important diagnostic features of selecting common nonneoplastic diseases of the musculoskeletal system that cause significant disability and morbidity.

Structure, function, and pathology of PHF23.

Plant Homeodomain Finger Protein 23 (PHF23) is a member of the Plant Homeodomain (PHD) finger protein family and has been extensively reported since its discovery. Numerous studies have demonstrated that PHF23 plays a crucial role in various biological processes, such as gene expression regulation, autophagy, and tumorigenesis. Additionally, PHF23 is associated with various diseases including various malignancies, osteoarthritis, and tuberculosis, all of which currently lack effective and targeted treatment options. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the existing literature on PH

Guided growth for paediatric knee pathology.

Guided growth has fundamentally transformed paediatric knee surgery, offering a less invasive alternative to manage paediatric knee pathology and lower limb angular deformities. A better understanding of the various guided growth techniques, growth plate mechanism and pathology has expanded the indications of physeal modulation to include coronal plane deformities, patellofemoral instability with genu valgum, osteochondritis dissecans with mechanical malalignment, ACL injuries with associated deformities, sequelae of paediatric meniscal pathology, and knee fixed flexion deformities. This syste…

Immunohistochemical Study Protocol in Thyroid Pathology.

Immunohistochemical study proves valuable in the diagnosis of neoplastic pathology. Its application allows us to differentiate the origin of tumors, as seen with thyroglobulin and TTF1 in well-differentiated tumors of follicular origin and calcitonin or other neuroendocrine markers for tumors arising from C cells. At times, immunohistochemical study becomes necessary for the classification of thyroid carcinomas arising from follicular cells, although specific antibodies that would enable the exclusion of malignancy or differentiation between follicular carcinomas and papillary carcinomas have …

[Secondary thyroid lymphoma: a misleading pathology].

INTRODUCTION: The thyroid gland frequently presents malignant lesions, usually of follicular origin. Thyroid lymphoma, primary or secondary, is an extremely rare disease. ABSTRACT AND CONCLUSIONS: Secondary thyroid lymphoma poses a diagnostic challenge, which includes in its differential diagnosis thyroid carcinoma and other rare entities, such as primary lymphoma (history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis) or intrathyroidal metastases (history of oncology), the diagnostic key being the anatomopathological study. RESULTS: A patient with involvement of the gland by a secondary lymphoma with erroneou

[Hepatitis E: Epidemiology, pathology and prevention].

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis. HEV genotypes 1 and 2 are associated with oro-faecal epidemics and fulminant hepatitis in pregnant women. HEV genotypes 3 and 4 are a zoonosis transmitted by uncooked pork. Infection is usually spontaneously resolutive. Chronic hepatitis may occur in immunocompromised patients. Extrahepatic disease is also possible. Prevention is based on hygiene, especially in high-risk patients, and access to safe drinking water for all. A recombinant vaccine against HEV has been developed and is currently being validated by the WHO.

Competitive fungal commensalism mitigates candidiasis pathology.

The mycobiota are a critical part of the gut microbiome, but host-fungal interactions and specific functional contributions of commensal fungi to host fitness remain incompletely understood. Here, we report the identification of a new fungal commensal, Kazachstania heterogenica var. weizmannii, isolated from murine intestines. K. weizmannii exposure prevented Candida albicans colonization and significantly reduced the commensal C. albicans burden in colonized animals. Following immunosuppression of C. albicans colonized mice, competitive fungal commensalism thereby mitigated fatal candidiasis.

Lipid imaging of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects one in eight individuals over 65 and poses an immense societal challenge. AD pathology is characterized by the formation of beta-amyloid plaques and Tau tangles in the brain. While some disease-modifying treatments targeting beta-amyloid are emerging, the exact chain of events underlying the pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear. Brain lipids have long been implicated in AD pathology, though their role in AD pathogenesis remains not fully resolved. Significant advancements in mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) allow to detail spatial lipid regulations in bi…

Polarised light scanner for digital pathology.

Digital pathology is rapidly transforming diagnostic pathology by allowing remote work and integration of artificial intelligence solutions. Nevertheless, certain technical issues remain to be resolved. Notably, digital images captured by conventional scanners cannot be subjected to polarised light analysis [1]. We have therefore studied if images obtained using the Glissando POL Brightfield and Polarised Light Scanner are comparable to those obtained using conventional polarised light microscopy. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections from 75 cases, including cases of amyloidosis, periprosthe…

Ultrasound accuracy for brachial plexus pathology.

AIM: To determine (a) the accuracy of ultrasound in detecting brachial plexus pathology and (b) outline the advantages and limitations of ultrasound compared to MRI for imaging the brachial plexus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: cases with clinically suspected brachial plexus pathology were evaluated first by ultrasound, followed by MRI. Patients with prior brachial plexus imaging were excluded. The final diagnosis was based on a combination of ultrasound, MRI, clinical follow-up, and surgical findings. The accuracy of the ultrasound was assessed by comparing the ultrasound and the final diagnoses. Th…

Cataract surgery with corneal endothelial pathology.

It is not uncommon for Fuch's endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) patients to present with a co-existent cataract. Surgeons are often faced with a choice between simultaneous and staged corneal and cataract surgery. Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) has been found to have better visual outcomes as compared to Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) and penetrating keratoplasty and is currently the preferred surgery for FECD. Endothelial cell count and pachymetry cutoffs were earlier used for decision-making. Various other investigations such as Scheimpflug imagi
