Periapical and endodontic status among 65-year-old Oslo-citizens.

AIM: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) and root-filled teeth in a 65-year-old population in Oslo, Norway, and to investigate associations of pathosis and endodontic treatment with selected individual risk indicators and technical quality of root fillings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A random sample of 450 65-year-olds in Oslo answered a questionnaire and underwent a clinical and radiological examination (52% men and 48% women). Periapical radiographs were taken of all root-filled teeth and of teeth with apical radiolucency, and periapical st

Multivariate Genome-Wide Analysis Delineates Shared Genetic Determinants Across Periodontal and Oral Microbial Phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis affects approximately 10% of the global population, posing a serious threat to tooth retention and quality of life. The disease emerges from bidirectional host-microbiome interactions that can shift from homeostasis to dysbiosis and chronic inflammation, yet conventional single-phenotype analyses cannot resolve pleiotropic loci acting across interrelated periodontal and microbial traits. We aimed to jointly model the shared genetic structure of six periodontitis-related phenotypes and to prioritise pleiotropic loci with translational relevance. METHODS AND MATERIALS:

Effect of Occlusal Reduction on Post-operative Pain in Diabetic and Non-diabetic Patients With Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis in a Single Visit: An In Vivo Study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common and significant sensory and emotional experience that often drives patients to seek medical care. In dentistry, managing pain, especially during and after endodontic treatment, remains a critical challenge. Endodontics focuses on treating diseases of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Although root canal treatment (RCT) is often perceived as painful, studies indicate that patients who have undergone RCT frequently describe it as painless. Despite advancements, postoperative pain due to acute periapical inflammation is still a concern. Apical periodontitis,

Perforating external root resorption with periodontal-derived osseous ingrowth: a radiographic mimic of internal replacement resorption.

OBJECTIVE: Intraradicular mixed radiolucent and radiopaque changes within the root canal space are often diagnosed as internal replacement resorption. However, radiographs alone cannot confirm tissue origin or periodontal-endodontic communication. This study examined whether perforating external root resorption can establish a trans-radicular portal, permit periodontal-derived osseous ingrowth, and produce a radiographic mimic of internal replacement resorption. METHODS: This observational clinico-radiographic and histomorphological correlation study analysed 97 extracted permanent teeth in t

Clinical and Radiographic Assessment of Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin in the Treatment of Intrabony Defects.

BACKGROUND: Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) has emerged as a bioactive material in periodontal regeneration due to its rich content of growth factors and ease of application. However, its clinical efficacy in managing intrabony defects remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of intrabony defect treatment using i-PRF in comparison with open flap debridement (OFD) alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical trial included 40 patients with chronic periodontitis presenting with intrabony defects, divided into two groups:

Proinflammatory mediators related to orthodontically induced periapical root resorption in rat mandibular molars.

OBJECTIVES: The early phase of orthodontic tooth movement involves acute inflammatory response that may induce bone resorption. The aim of this study was to localize and quantify cells in the periodontium expressing proinflammatory mediators during orthodontically induced periapical root resorption of the rat mandibular molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The levels of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 (IL-1) α and β, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), inflammatory enzymes cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2, and their product prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the root resorption site were compared to those

The effect of orthodontic treatment on periodontal bone support in patients with advanced loss of marginal periodontium.

Loss of periodontal bone support was examined in 24 patients orthodontically treated for pathologic tooth migration in one jaw. Prior to orthodontic realignment of the front teeth, the patients had received periodontal treatment. Active appliance therapy was not given until inflammation was eliminated and the patients demonstrated a high level of oral hygiene. A 0.020-inch spiral wire was bonded to each adjacent realigned tooth for retention. The levels of marginal bone of the front teeth in the treated and untreated jaws were measured in percentage of "maximum bone height" on periapical radio

Factors affecting the periapical healing process of endodontically treated teeth.

Tissue repair is an essential process that reestablishes tissue integrity and regular function. Nevertheless, different therapeutic factors and clinical conditions may interfere in this process of periapical healing. This review aims to discuss the important therapeutic factors associated with the clinical protocol used during root canal treatment and to highlight the systemic conditions associated with the periapical healing process of endodontically treated teeth. The antibacterial strategies indicated in the conventional treatment of an inflamed and infected pulp and the modulation of the h

Periradicular curettage.

Periradicular curettage is a part of the treatment procedure of periradicular surgery. Its main purpose is to remove pathological periradicular tissues for visibility and accessibility to facilitate the treatment of the apical root canal system, or sometimes for the removal of harmful foreign materials present in the periradicular area. Inflammatory periradicular lesions (granuloma and cysts) are the responses of the periradicular tissues to irritants from the root canal and not from the periradicular area unless medicaments and/or filling materials have been forced through the apical foramina

Enterococcus Phage vB_EfaS_HEf13 as an Anti-Biofilm Agent Against Enterococcus faecalis.

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive bacterium that is frequently found in the periapical lesion of patients with apical periodontitis. Its biofilm formation in root canal is closely related to the development of refractory apical periodontitis by providing increased resistance to endodontic treatments. Phage therapy has recently been considered as an efficient therapeutic strategy in controlling various periodontal pathogens. We previously demonstrated the bactericidal capacities of Enterococcus phage vB_EfaS_HEf13 (phage HEf13) against clinically-isolated E. faecalis strains. Here, we in
