Investigating Peripheral SIAH3 DNA Methylation in Adult Mental Disorders in Relation to Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Adult mental disorders (aMD), including borderline personality disorder (BPD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD), share adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as an environmental risk factor. Epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation (DNAm), may mediate the biological link between early adversity and psychiatric risk. SIAH3, implicated in stress-related and mitochondrial pathways, has been previously associated with both ACE and aMD. This study examined SIAH3 DNAm in adults with BPD, MDD, or SAD, relative to healthy control participants (HC), testing effec

Physical Activity Levels and Barriers Among Young People with Mental Disorders: A Mixed Methods Analysis Supporting the Development of a National Sport Mental Health Clinic.

BACKGROUND: While the positive relationship between mental health and physical activity (PA) is well established, numerous barriers are reported. This study analyzed PA levels and associated barriers in young people attending a national child and adolescent mental health service using a quantitatively driven mixed methods design. METHODS: From contacted patient families (n = 1284) meeting inclusion criteria, 23.67% (n = 304; age 12 to 18 years) completed a questionnaire (quantitative component/supplementary qualitative component). Statistical tests and thematic analysis were used to interpret

Implicit Perception of Differences between NLP-Produced and Human-Produced Language in the Mentalizing Network.

Natural language processing (NLP) is central to the communication with machines and among ourselves, and NLP research field has long sought to produce human-quality language. Identification of informative criteria for measuring NLP-produced language quality will support development of ever-better NLP tools. The authors hypothesize that mentalizing network neural activity may be used to distinguish NLP-produced language from human-produced language, even for cases where human judges cannot subjectively distinguish the language source. Using the social chatbots Google Meena in English and Micros

Comorbidity and Overlaps between Autism Spectrum and Borderline Personality Disorder: State of the Art.

Despite the relationship between Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and personality disorders (PD) still being scarcely understood, recent investigations increased awareness about significant overlaps between some PD and autism spectrum conditions. In this framework, several studies suggested the presence of similarities between BPD and ASD symptoms and traits, based on the recent literature that increasingly reported increased comorbidity rates and significant symptomatologic overlaps between the two conditions. The aim of this review is to describe the available studies about the prevalence of t

Clinical observation of patients with inferior alveolar nerve sensory disturbance.

Fifty-four patients diagnosed with paresthesia on one side of the lower lip or skin in the chin area, were examined by multiple sensory tests and assessed self-reported subjective symptoms and the psychological state through questionnaires. Additionally, they were followed over time. Each sensory test threshold was evaluated and classified according to the individual way of scoring system, and the average sensory score (ASS) was used to analyze the correlation between self-reported symptoms and psychological state. On the second visit, all sensory test results had improved. The ASS was positiv

The Emotional and Functional Impact of the Type of Tinnitus Sensation.

One to three percent of individuals with tinnitus experience significant reduction in quality of life. Factors that contribute to distress include personality variables, intolerance to loud noises, external locus of control, and pre-existing anxiety. Characteristics of tinnitus itself, such as perceived loudness, can also cause functional impairment. It is unknown whether different tinnitus sensations have various effects on either emotional or functional impairment, which can reduce quality of life. While audiological tests can determine pitch and loudness of tinnitus, questionnaires also can

[Hashimoto's encephalopathy presenting periodic synchronous discharge, as a differential diagnosis for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease].

Here, we report a case of Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) mimicking Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for status epilepticus. He had gradually presented personality change over the last two years. On admission, he was in state of akinetic mutism. He exhibited seizures on the left side of his body, including the face, and intermittent myoclonic movement. Routine laboratory tests showed no abnormalities, including thyroid functions. An EEG study showed typical periodic synchronous discharge (PSD). Brain MRI showed high-intensity areas in the bilatera

Absolute versus relative values: effects on medical decisions and personality of patients and physicians.

BACKGROUND: Speculation suggests that health care workers and patients who believe in ethical values that do not change--absolute values--will respond differently to ethical problems and personality tests than those who affirm changing-relative values. METHODS: We did a cross-sectional survey to investigate the effects of absolute vs relative values on (1) decision making concerning ethical dilemmas and (2) questionnaire assessments of hostility, forgiveness, and social desirability. Two groups of participants were medical/surgical inpatients (n = 60) at a Department of Veterans Affairs medic…

Risk factors associated with persistence of neuropsychological deficits in persons with organic solvent exposure.

This study examined neuropsychological prognosis following organic solvent exposure. Twenty-seven persons with evidence of "mild toxic encephalopathy" were evaluated on two separate occasions with a standard neuropsychological test battery and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Ratings by experienced clinicians revealed that 50% of exposed persons had improved neuropsychological performance at the second evaluation. The other 50% were rated as having no change or a decline in neuropsychological tests scores. While the majority of persons in the good-outcome group were working at

[Development of a structured anxiety interview for seniors].

Since we face considerable practical problems in the assessment of elderly subjects with self-rating instruments (paper-pencil tests) measuring anxiety and, since we lack norms for the age of 65 and above, we developed a structured inventory (SAIS) for the assessment of anxiety in the elderly. The instrument comprises three components, anxiety normally is expressed in; all have been verified by empirical personality research: the cognitive, the physiological and the behavioural component. In a pilot study, we determined themes of anxiety relevant to elderly people. When the items were develope

Neural responses to others' pain vary with psychopathic traits in healthy adult males.

Disrupted empathic processing is a core feature of psychopathy. Neuroimaging data have suggested that individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits show atypical responses to others' pain in a network of brain regions typically recruited during empathic processing (anterior insula, inferior frontal gyrus, and mid- and anterior cingulate cortex). Here, we investigated whether neural responses to others' pain vary with psychopathic traits within the general population in a similar manner to that found in individuals at the extreme end of the continuum. As predicted, variation in psychopath

The future (or lack of future) of personalized prescription in psychiatry.

Rapid technological advances in genetics have created conceptual chaos regarding the genetics of drug response. Terms for differing concepts are used interchangeably: pharmacogenetics with pharmacogenomics, personalized medicine with personalized prescription. Biomarker has many definitions. The author prefers the concept of personalized prescription and uses it with implications beyond pharmacogenetics by considering all scientific information valid for prescribing medication. Genetics may not be crucial for all drugs. In this comprehensive view, clinicians must consider genetic, environmenta

Effect of skin test with M. leprae soluble antigen on reaction to a subsequent test with the same antigen.

Soluble skin-test antigens (STA), produced from armadillo-derived Mycobacterium leprae by Drs. Rees and Convit, were expected to meet the long-felt need of a test for leprosy infection and also to serve as tests for measuring postvaccination sensitization induced by vaccine preparations against leprosy. The present paper reports results from two studies examining the influence, if any, of skin testing with Rees' STA on reaction to a subsequent test with the same antigen. In the first study, 2168 persons from households of leprosy patients and from neighboring households were skin tested with R
