Calcaneal osteotomy for hindfoot deformity.

Calcaneal osteotomy is an extra-articular procedure used for conservative surgical treatment of hindfoot deformity. It has static, architectural and dynamic effects, reorienting the tuberosity action point of the digastric muscle formation of the sural triceps and plantar aponeurosis. Calcaneal osteotomies vary in location, form and displacement, but can be categorized as tuberosity osteotomy, acting on talar position, and cervical osteotomy, acting on Chopart joint-line orientation. We here describe the 3 main calcaneal osteotomies we use for hindfoot deformity: talar varus/valgus, valgus fla

Complications associated with bichectomy surgery: a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The buccal fat pad also known as Bichat's fat pad has the same histological characteristics as fats located in other regions of the body, however, its particularity is the wrapping of a fibrous capsule that prevents it from being metabolized. Bichectomy is the surgical procedure that partially removes oral fat, consequently it is possible to observe the volumetric reduction of the lower third of the face and the definition of contours and angulations, making the face esthetically pleasing. However, this procedure is related to several potentially serious complications in the post

Surgical Reconstruction of the Metatarsal Pad Using Nonweight-Bearing Surfaces of the Footpads in a Dog.

A 9 yr old mixed-breed dog weighing 6.3 kg was presented with degloving injuries and multiple lacerations on the footpads of both hindlimbs. After amputation of the left hindlimb and debridement of the necrotic footpads on the right hindlimb, the remaining pads were insufficient for ambulation. The complete carpal pads and the peripheral, nonweight-bearing portions of the second and fifth digital pads of both forelimbs were harvested for pad grafting. All segments were sutured on the cutaneous trunci muscle in the predetermined location of the right abdominal wall for the pouch flap. After det

Orthoplastic Approach for Surgical Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers remain a challenge to practitioners and costly to health care systems. They range from simple to complex and many treatment options are available. By following standard wound care protocols to ensure adequate blood supply, infection control, debridement, wound management, and offloading many diabetic foot ulcers heal in a timely fashion. For those that do not, an underlying foot and ankle musculoskeletal abnormality must be suspected and treated concomitantly with soft tissue treatment. This article presents a systematic orthoplastics approach for surgical treatment of dia

Aesthetic Zygoma Reduction in Asian Patients.

Zygoma reduction is indicated in patients where the primary aim of surgery is reduction in the width of cheekbones to achieve smoother and more feminine facial aesthetic lines. Surgeons should evaluate the width of midface (bizygomatic width) and the protrusion of zygoma (volume and position of the zygomatic body) when evaluating patients where such a procedure is indicated. Intraoral high-L osteotomy is the most useful method to successfully treat a wide spectrum of zygomatic protrusions and is widely accepted as the treatment of choice for aesthetic purposes. The amount of ostectomy is deter

Autologous versus prosthetic nasal and auricular reconstruction - patient, professional and layperson perceptions.

The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the perceptions of aesthetic outcome following the autologous and prosthetic reconstruction of nasal and auricular defects among patients, professionals (oral and maxillofacial surgeons and ear, nose and throat surgeons) and people unfamiliar with reconstructive surgery. The influence of anatomical subunits on the overall perception of nasal and auricular reconstructions was also determined. A total of 119 patients treated for nasal and auricular defects between 1997 and 2016, with a minimum follow-up period of 6 months, were selected, and

A Surgical and Educational Video of the Inferior Turbinate Mucosal Flap for the Nasal Floor and Intraoral Reconstruction in Unilateral Complete Cleft Lip Repair.

Since the original description of Millard rotation advancement principle for cleft lip repair, many important contributions have subsequently been described by other surgeons worldwide. However, the reconstruction of the nasal floor and intraoral lining has received less attention over time. This article demonstrates a modified unilateral complete cleft lip repair using the rotation advancement principle plus multipurpose inferior turbinate mucosal flap. The accompanying videos display the 10 key steps for rationale, design, and proper execution of the inferior turbinate mucosal flap for the n

[Microsurgical replantation of traumatic amputated lip].

This is a case report of two patients with traumatic amputated lip due to respectively human bite and bicycle head-on-car collision. Both patients were successfully treated by microsurgical replantation within 24 hours and with post-operative leech treatment. Furthermore, a MEDLINE/PubMed search was performed for all scientific English articles of lip amputation and replantation using microsurgery. We want to address the importance of preserving amputated parts and the necessity of 24-hour access to plastic surgery and microsurgery in trauma if needed.

[Tenoarthrolysis after flexor tendon injuries].

Normal function of the fingers and thumb depends on properly gliding flexor tendons and a free range of motion of the involved joints. This normal gliding function may be inhibited by adhesions due to damage of the tendon, tendon sheath and adjacent tissue. When digital function is still limited despite a long-term course of hand therapy and there are no signs of further improvement, surgical intervention should be considered. There are no absolute indications for tenoathrolysis of the flexor tendons. With respect to complications, such as secondary tendon rupture, loss of annular pulleys and

[Defect coverage after severe soft tissue infections: when and how?].

Severe infections frequently cause large soft tissue defects which require early defect coverage by plastic surgeons. A number of reconstructive treatment options are available, ranging from local flaps to microvascular free flap reconstructions. In this respect it is important that the selection of the optimal reconstructive technique is made based on individual patient characteristics and in a timely manner. Weeks of inpatient treatment with vacuum dressings often delay defect coverage and should be avoided as they burden both the patient and the healthcare system. Therefore, it is in the be

Injectable Hydrogels as Three-Dimensional Network Reservoirs for Osteoporosis Treatment.

Despite tremendous progresses made in the field of tissue engineering over the past several decades, it remains a significant challenge for the treatment of osteoporosis (OP) due to the lack of appropriate carriers to improve the bioavailability of therapeutic agents and the unavailability of artificial bone matrix with desired properties for the replacement of damaged bone regions. Encouragingly, the development of injectable hydrogels for the treatment of OP has attracted increasing attention in recent years because they can serve either as a reservoir for various therapeutic species or as a

About the One Hemi-Uvula Repair Technique During Palatoplasty.

This is a response to a letter replying to our paper discussing the significance of the uvula during palatoplasty and our surgical technique of uvula repair. The hemi-uvula repair technique was developed independently in our department. In our publication, we fully cited the 2 studies by Rossell-Perry et al about uvula repair and acknowledged them to be the first to publish the concept of using one hemi-uvula. Upon further study, the mistake of omitting 2 references from the list, although they were cited in the text, was found to have occurred during the transition between publishers of this

Anatomical Study and Clinical Application of Free Thoracoacromial Artery True-Perforator Flap for Reconstruction of the Face.

INTRODUCTION: The clavicular region is acknowledged as one of the most suitable donor sites for reconstruction of the face or neck. Recently, a free thoracoacromial artery (TAA) perforator (TAAP) flap was reported as a new option for reconstruction of the face. However, the TAAP flap has several drawbacks including tedious intramuscular dissection of the pedicle and loss of availability of a pectoralis major flap as a bailout option in case of cancer recurrence. We performed an anatomical study of the TAAP and developed a novel TAA "true-perforator" flap, in which we can preserve the main trun

Recent advances in lip reconstruction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews recently described techniques used to reconstruct lip defects. Emphasis is placed on the ability of these flaps to restore function and appearance of the lips as well as their limitations. RECENT FINDINGS: The focus of recent advances in lip reconstruction has been to achieve better oral competence, speech and improved cosmetic appearance. New modifications to the traditional Karapandzic and Abbé flaps have expanded their uses. A host of novel local tissue transfer techniques has become available with improved outcomes and less morbidity. Similarly, new
