Short-term blood pressure variability has been studied extensively with monitoring techniques. Nine female and 2 male hyperprolactinaemic patients (plasma prolactin levels averaging 180-420 ng/ml) were subjected to measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) either under basal conditions or after water load in comparison with 5 healthy volunteers. Basal values of IOP in hyperprolactinaemic patients were 37.8% higher than those of controls. Moreover, after water load hyperprolactinaemic patients showed a sustained increase in IOP that reached values of pathological significance. These results suggest that prolactin may contribute to the hormonal regulation of IOP in humans.

Intracranial pressure was measured in 82 patients in the Neurosurgical Clinic, Basle, from 1978-1982. The methods used werette Gobiet Screw (62 patients), the Gealtec Probe (17 patients) and intraventricular drainage. Intracranial pressure monitoring was carried out in 54 patients with severe craniocerebral injury in 12 patients with large cranial bone defects and a subsequent cranioplasty, in 12 patients to diagnose hydrocephalus and in 4 patients for other reasons. Indications for intracranial monitoring results and therapy are discussed.

This study attempted to determine the occurrence rate of blood pressure reduction after stroke by reviewing 100 patients with stroke diagnosed by clinical and laboratory studies. Retrospectively, blood pressures were noted on admission, 2nd hospital day and on discharge. Hypertension was defined as readings over 160 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of home versus clinic blood pressure 11 patients with mild untreated hypertension were instructed in self-measurement of blood pressure with mercury manometers. The lower total cost of using home readings as well as problems of bias and blinding are discussed. Home blood pressure is a promising technique for clinical and epidemiologic research.

A retrospective review of 41 patients with post-mortem evidence of acute pancreatitis revealed that 19 patients (46%) showed concomitant evidence of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). A prospective analysis of five patients with increased ICP demonstrated two patients with evidence of acute pancreatitis.
